I'm so glad to be able to say this was a close call, Markus, our photographer and loved friend was out fishing two days ago. It was a beautiful morning, -5 degrees Celsius and the ice seemed great. He went out fishing, but after a few hours he felt like the ice was getting bad and decided to call it quits. He put his stuff together, turned on the GoPro and started walking back home. The rest is what you see.
This time it went well, hopefully there won't be a next time. Please, be cautious out there. We are experienced on the ice and know when troubles might occur, and still end up in situations like this. Markus is strong, with a good physique and had his ice nails accessible. Many fishermen out there wouldn't stand a chance in a situation like this so don't put yourself in one.
Comments like "He should've know the ice was this bad" etc won't be appreciated. The ice wasn't bad when he went out, it went bad because of the sun and when he realized he started heading towards the shoreline. Spring is dangerous on the ice so be careful!

For those reading: How to avoid this, 1) no spud bar to check the ice 2) when on thin ice, look at the forecast, good ice in the morning does not mean good ice in the afternoon 3) when you fall in, always go back the way you came from, you already walked in that direction, you know the ice can support you. Stay safe

I was around 10 yrs old when i was ice scating in a semi remote area (few hundred meters from houses) on a small slow river that froze where people often go to ice scate and walk once the ice is thick enough (but not where i was, few hundred meters back close to houses).. anyway i was ice scating.. had full thick winter gear on me.. and was with few "friends".. at one point i heard the ice making scary sounds.. and it broke under me while i was ice scating quite fast... i went over 5m under the ice and about 5m down (i remember touching the bottom and seeing under ice, it was quite clear).. i remember feeling extremely heavey due to the thick jacket, heavy ice scates and other stuff i had on me.. because i was a good swimmer i managed to swim back to the hole where i fell through.. once there i tried to climb up.. but because the ice wasn't thick enough... i just kept falling through it until i reached the area where it could hold my weight.. (i spread my legs and arms to have less weight on the surface).. i was around 30m from the shore where i fell through.. so it took quite a while until i reached close enough to grab the rope that some people eventually trew at me.. all in all.. i survived and got out.. people that helped me brought me inside the house close by and gave me dry clothes and sat me next to fire.. until my parents came.. i went to the hospital later and other than having a few cuts.. i was ok all in all.. it was a VERY scary experience.. especially for such a small boy

Firstly, I'm glad that he's alright! However: "Comments like "He should've know the ice was this bad" etc won't be appreciated. The ice wasn't bad when he went out, it went bad because of the sun and when he realized he started heading towards the shoreline." I mean, someone ought to tell him if he couldn't figure that out himself. There's open water along the shoreline for god sake, and there's no way a thing like that just happens after a few hours of sun. The ice doesn't go from good to bad in a matter of hours. "We are experienced on the ice and know when troubles might occur, and still end up in situations like this." Lots of people die going through ice during springtime simply because they think they're experienced and know how the ice behave. Being out on the ice a lot and not going through is not to be experienced, it's just being lucky. Deciding to go out on that ice in the first place is just reckless.

But when you drill out holes that are 18 inches plus you definitely will have no problem. You should try it. Just know not to hit the ice when it is so damn thin....

And first if you must go fish in ice that is so thin and in spring sun, why dont you have a survival suit on? Yes they cost about 1000 euros but the fish arent worth of your life. But good that you had ice spikes with you, lot of people dont use them and that may be fatal choice. But good that he kept calm and got out!

I once had to call 911 because a kid fell through the ice. That year, the ice was very sketchy due to warm temps. What amazes me is that he didn't have a spud bar or spike to pull himself out and didn't even bother to scream for help either. The kid was 70 yards out, and it is a good thing I kept looking back at him while he ventured off the distance.

I love how the poster added in description "The ice wasn't bad when he went out, it went bad because of the sun and when he realized he started heading towards the shoreline". No, no that's not what went wrong. He fell through the ice because it was THIN, from the start, not from the sun. I love fishing as much as the next guy, but when conditions are not good yet to ice fish, you don't go out until they do! Inches of ice is what is needed to support your weight, not an inch that easily breaks apart. Glad he got out with his life, many are not so lucky!

If ice will go bad from a few hours of sunlight in -5 degrees Celsius weather then I think one can only conclude that the ice was bad to begin with. Having one patch of good ice where you start shouldn't be interpreted as a sign that it's good everywhere. How many spots did he check the thickness during the day? What were the numbers? Did that testing identify sketchy areas on the lake or patterns? I don't mean to sound like a know it all, because I am far from it. I just follow the instructions of the guys in charge of our lake, who are pretty knowledgeable. But this season when they shut it down on March 22nd the ice was still at least 15cm thick everywhere. It was a little mushy in spots but nobody was going through. I wondered if they were being overly cautious. But a short 4 days later there wasn't a single patch of ice left on the entire lake! Did they know what they were doing? Absolutely!

Wow man your are one tough dude!! I had something sorta like this happen before. Their was 2.5" inches of solid black ice on lake george one trip and later in the day the sun came out similar to this and started sending cracks across the lake. Pressure cracks. By the time we got towards the shore we came on we realized the shore was all broke up and we had to walk a mile out of our way just to get back off. I have fallen through twice myself. Not fun!! One i was pulled out by a friend and the other i pulled myself out. They were pretty much right in and right out situations. Nothing this bad. Not sure i would have survived this one... Maybe?.. He had no choice but to keep breaking the ice until he was to saftey. Scary shite!! Glad your still here bud! It wasn't your time! Stay safe guys! Fish on! God bless ya!!

Det stämmer ju om man är ute och skridskor och isen brister och man direkt kan återvända men om det gått flera timmar och solen står högt på mörka vårisar så finns det nog ingen is kvar som bär. I efterhand skulle han givetvis undvikit de mörkare partierna som absorberar mer värme men det är inte lätt i stridens hetta
