3 important facts you MUST consider before buying or returning a NeatDesk Scanner. 1. Ignore OLD Reviews! 2. Don't worry about auto-filling fields. It's the SEARCH feature you are going to rely on, and it rocks! (And auto-fill improves as you go along. It seems to "learn" as it goes). 3. To make installation easy: go straight to the neat.com website and download the software. It's going to save you a ton of aggravation.
I didn't expect to love this document scanner, but I do! I made this video because I quickly learned that old reviews are really giving this cool machine a bad rap! My full written review can be found on my blog, here: heymimi.com/nea...

I purchased the NeatDesk several months ago. Tried it one time, approx. 10mins and gave up. Before I sell it, I figured TRY IT AGAIN - but ask for help. I visited a business that has it locally and asked the owner how did she like it... SHE SAID, BEST ADDITION TO HER OFFICE. So I'm trying it again...... I hope & pray its as easy as you demonstrate. Will update you in a few days.

Here is a link to my second video about NeatDesk kzfaq.info/get/bejne/d9Sof9171ae3Z2g.html where I look at your options for backup and exporting your Neat Data. I compare the costs of various cloud options including NeatCloud, Evernote, and Dropbox. I also tell you about my computer, in case it might help you figure out if your computer hardware is an obstacle to having a good experience with your Neat Desk Scanner. I hope you find it helpful! Neat probably ok now...I purchased one of their scanners when neat first came out around 2007. It was so buggy and slow I stopped using it. The company advertised their product as "great" and put out a product that was so buggy that Neat lost credibility and I never used them again. But your review is outstanding....great job!

+vinnyg101 Thank you for the nice compliment. I need to do a little homework on the latest software, but my impression is that they have simplified the software. I keep seeing references to the "Light Desktop Software" on the Neat website. I've also just purchased a refurbished Neat Connect, which I *think* bypasses the need to download software to your computer. I need to do a little research before I review the Neat Connect, but so far I really like that it does not ever have to be connected to any computer, simply uploads to the cloud (any cloud service, or sends it to a printer or email address.).. I think! This will leave my Neat Desk Machine, to dedicate to "practice data" for more videos on the topic.

I absolutely %100 agree with you on almost everything you said in this video. My mom is in the process of starting her own business. I remembered this Neat Scanner from the info commercials years ago and thought it would be perfect for what my mom was looking for. I did some research and noticed the reviews got better as you got to the most current ones. This was the case at multiple websites too. It was all I needed to convince my mom she needed this. Research is an art form all it's own and you really do need to pay close attention to even the tiniest details before you make any decisions. Thank you for your time making your video.

Chani Kaur Yes, I just saw it on HSN last night for $249 with free shipping, which is a smokin' deal! I bought mine on HSN last year, because the flexpay (pay in 5 increments, no interest) allowed me to get it without having to fork-out $350 for something I was sure I would end up returning. After reading bad reviews, I was SURE I would hate it, but as you can see: After 6 months of use, I still LOVE this thing! Best purchase I ever made. Truly life changing!

Hi Mini, I called Neat today and asked if I could access the database from something other then the neat software and the answer is No. So that tells me that the product is proprietary. But, that is NOT a BAD thing. It just means that they are not using or telling customers that they are using a open back end database. This does not make a product bad. The fact they they allow you to export date to CSV's, PDF's, JPG;s is awesome, but that does not make it not proprietary, but it does mean that they care about customers and provide you a means to export data to use in other software. So technically, the software is proprietary, but that in it self does not make something bad. It just means other software can not directly access their database and they do not share how they store the data internally. Based on you reviews, I have purchased the product and because neat is responsive to customer needs. But, technically, the software it is proprietary, but they do provide a way to export data. If it was not proprietary you would not need to export the data, you could access it directly from other products.

Thank You Mimi for a GREAT review... I have worked with Neat Receipts and then Neat Desk for the better part of 6 years now.. and you are right..there have been issues in the past.. some of it due to neat.. but as much due to the quality of the thermo-printed receipts that you get everywhere now... Nice to hear an un-biased review.. I am just another user...and think its too bad the youTube and amazon dont do a good job of updating the information they are passing on... Steve

Before I ask a question, I have to say, I Love the "Custom Scripts" comment and totally agree with you, what user, with no programming experience and rightfully so, would want to write "custom script" on a product they pick up for ease of use. As for the comment being discriminatory, I total agree as well. In recent months, Amazon has started taking action against "fake" reviews and I think it's time, that these companies started taking action against these frivolous and misleading reviews. Ok, before I forget, I had a question about this scanner. Many of the reviews seem to emphasis the software, I would like to see a review on the process of scanning. I always seem to get crooked scans and wanted to know if there is a specific area that would be best to put the smaller sized documents, that may not be 8.5x11 (to the right, left or center), this also goes for receipts as well. Any suggestions?
@Heymimi
@Heymimi 8 жыл бұрын
+Margo DiPatri The reason I haven't done a detailed video on the scanning process, is because I would be exposing so much personal financial information in the video. I've tried to do it, but I end up spending hours trying to blur out account #s, addresses, social security numbers! It's one big blurry mess, and I give up! I plan to make an entire folder of innocuous generic scans, so that I can make a video about using the software without feeling nervous about my privacy. Regarding crooked scans: Before you scan a smaller document, that is not a receipt: Unclick the "Auto" setting ... click "Document" setting at the top left of your screen (on your computer) and then use any of the feeds on the machine that will keep it straight. Those "feed" sections only categorize as "document, receipt or contact" when the setting is on AUTO. I often get scans that are slighty askew, but I only am concerned with it, if I need to print the item (which is not very often). You can easily straighten each scan to be perfectly vertical, but it's a waste of time, unless you need to print. If you do want to straighten it, choose the scan, and click on the option at the lower right and you can rotate it right or left. (I'm just saying this from memory, but I'll try to make a video about it). I hope this helps a little. Will try to make a video about these, as they are common questions! Thanks for your comments!

Hey Mimi so after you scan all your documents receipts etc. the whole point of doing this is to get rid of clutter is it wise to toss out all the receipts and documents after you scan them I would think that would be the whole purpose to spend the money on the scanner and go through all this work is to free up space what do you think
@Heymimi
@Heymimi 8 жыл бұрын
+Cosimo Massimino Yes, I agree. It's taken me awhile but I am getting more aggressive about shredding documents after scanning them. Now I keep just the receipts for expensive purchases like TVs and appliances, that I fear will need repair or return. I keep some stuff for the first year and then shred. I toss most instructions now, because everything can be found online. Notes, addresses, business cards, momentos ... now I just scan with NeatDesk and and shred them. I can always look back at them on a computer screen.

Also note that the reviewer who said that Neatdesk is a closed (proprietary) system is correct but that's not always a bad thing. One thing to consider is if you are unhappy with Neatdesk down the road, how do you switch from it? Can you mass export all your documents into PDFs or do you have to do them one at a time? Makes me a little nervous to over invest in something proprietary like this.
@Heymimi
@Heymimi 9 жыл бұрын
aternoxx Not true! It is not proprietary! Why do people keep repeating and believing this misinformation?? NeatDesk is definitely LESS proprietary than its competitors! Neat saves to it's own software format, exports to most any accounting software, tax software or spreadsheet software. It exports to PDF, which is the ONLY option with Fujitsu snapscan. (I will check into your question about the the mass export as PDF; I haven't tried that because I like the Neat software just fine). But if you set it up to save ALL scans as PDFs (which is what Snapscan does), then you don't have to mass export anything. OR you tell Neat to save ALL your scans to Evernote (which is what most people do with Snapscan), then they are saved as PDFs to the cloud or to your computer, external HD ... basically anywhere you want. If you scan and tell it to save into the Neat software format, then it wants to save to one location, so that it always knows it is adding to the current correct database. It can sync to NeatCloud as a backup, which is cool because you can make changes on your ipad or iphone, while you are out in the field, and it will update your files at home, next time you open NeatDesk there.
@aternoxx
@aternoxx 9 жыл бұрын
HeyMimi DIY Sorry to break this to you Mimi, but when a company uses their own non-standardized database to store information, it is, by definition, proprietary. As I mentioned, this isn't always a bad thing but this is what made me shy away from NeatDesk a few years ago. I've been semi-paperless for about 10 years ago. I use a sheet-fed scanner, Hazel, Yelp, and lots-o-pdf files. I've recently started checking out FileThis.com to grab my statements online automatically. The horror story for me is to use Neatdesk for several years, build up a Terabyte of data in this database and then have something better come along and I cannot move to it cause I'm locked into a proprietary database format. Now if you say that Neatdesk allows you to opt out of the database alone and/or store as pdf files individually as you scan (without loss of features), that's enormous! PDF is a prolific document file format which is why so many people love scanners that scan direct to that format.
@Heymimi
@Heymimi 9 жыл бұрын
aternoxx 1. There are just 2 buttons on the Neat Desk machine, one is labelled SCAN and the other is labelled PDF. If you load your document into the scanner and press the PDF button, it scans and saves it directly as a PDF. So... I'd say that it qualifies as a scanner that scans directly to PDF format. This is exactly what the guy in video (that I find so misleading) does with his Fujitsu. He saves it to a folder he has set up to sync with Evernote. He implies that NeatDesk can't do that, which is completely false. You can do it with a push of the PDF button, right there on the top of the NeatDesk machine. 2. If you _want_ to use the NeatDesk software, you can just hit the SCAN button and it will save directly into the Neat Software. And if you like the software, I guess you will keep it there. If you want to keep your options open, see step three. 3. If you want to back up all the scans you made by your NeatDesk machine, en-mass, then within Neat, you can go to the folder you want to back up (Right now, I have just one folder called "2014") and click the *Export* button. From there Neat gives you these options: You can export a single item, selected items, or an entire folder to the following formats: Pick one: Image, PDF, CSV (contacts, documents or receipts), Excel, Quickbooks (Direct or IIF), Quicken, Tax Software (.TXF), Vcard, Neat File or Archive. I don't know if Neat moves that folder over to that export location, or just sends a copy over. I haven't messed with it, so you'd have to check into that yourself. I'd say that's a pretty comprehensive set of export options and file formats. CSV and PDF are just about as standardized as you can get, so I still disagree with anyone insisting that it is proprietary. I feel comfortable that I'm going to get "stuck" with the Neat software that I think it is pretty great. If I suddenly become so broke that I can't afford Neat's $5/month Cloud service, I'd either just back up to an external HD, or find a free cloud space (though I'm not sure there is a secure free account large enough to hold years & years of documents). Even external hard drives are not free. Well, I hope that helps, if you really were interested.

Hi Mimi - I enjoyed your review regarding NeatDesk, and if you have a moment I'd like to ask a few questions. My husband and I own a small service company and have been keeping paper files of our customers for far too long. Basically, we have to paw our way through hundreds of paper invoices and estimates to find a past customer, and if we do not know the exact month and year that we provided service to them, it is impossible to find their paperwork. I've been watching several review videos and tutorials for various software programs and scanners to try to determine what will work best for what it is that we are trying to accomplish, which is to create a customer database that would allow us to store customer information (contact info., service provided, amount charged, and date service was performed), the ability to print customer address labels for mailers, and have the ability to quickly search for said customers by typing in a keyword, such as their name, address, email address, and/or phone number. We would also like the ability to scan in the original hand-written invoice and attach it to a certain customer accordingly - (when we are in the work field we hand-write all invoices - customer's contact information, date, amount charged, work performed, and any additional notations). After watching your review of the NeatDesk scanner, it appears that this product has the capability of scanning our hand-written invoices, and than auto-filling customer information into custom fields. My questions are, once you scan in a document does it create an individual file for that document that has the availability of being updated; for example, if we wanted to update our customer's contact information, such as a phone number or address, do we have the capability to do so? If the scanner does not pick up certain customer information written on the invoice, am I able to go back and type in the information myself? Would the customer's contact information be searchable using keywords as listed above - customer name, address, email address, phone number? Can we export particular customer addresses into a file that we are able to print mailing labels for ad mailers or maintenance reminders? Can we send out maintenance reminders or ads to several emails at once? There are so many software programs available, customer database management programs, etc. out there that seem to be geared toward larger companies - we are a family owned and operated business - very small, with approximately 2,000 new customers each year, but with several file cabinets filled with approximately 25,000+ invoices of previous customers. We would love the availability to quickly look up a customer's file to view it's contents, send out mass emails of current ads, and print labels to send out ads and maintenance reminders. I was told by another to go with Quickbooks, which I'm not very familiar with either - I will need to view more tutorials regarding Quickbooks features and if it would work for what we need - i'm not sure if it has the capability of scanning and storing hand-written documents and attaching them accordingly. Anyway, questions regarding Quickbooks would be another novel for me to write - lol. We are beginners when it comes to transforming our "old school" ways into the new generation of keeping customer records. Any help you could offer would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Nena Kammerer Hi Nena, I'm a "home" user of Neat, so I'm not sure I'm going to be all that much help with your situation. But one answer might make the other questions moot. In my experience, Neat does not recognize handwriting, and therefore anything in handwriting would not be searchable. It has the same issue with logos. Unless it's a simple text logo, it treats it like a picture/graphic if it cannot discern the text However, if you scan those handwritten invoices and it doesn't recognize the handwriting, you have the opportunity to review every scan. Any fields that Neat can't auto-fill, you *can* type in yourself. You can also add additional custom fields, and there is a "NOTES" box where you can enter any information you like, and later go back in and add to those notes. It reminds me of Quicken, in the way you can pull up all the entries in a certain category. When reviewing a scan, you would choose a category from the drop-down list. If it doesn't fit in any of those categories, you can make a custom category, as needed. People criticize Neat for not auto-categorizing receipts, which is a criticism that perplexes me. How can it know whether the $23 you spent at CVS was for beauty products or Prescriptions/Medical Expenses? Over time, it learns if everything you buy from Home Depot is "Home Improvement" products, and will pre-populate those fields. But it doesn't do it, until it sees you do it a few times, or tell it to categorize that way. Then, during the review screen, you can correct it, if it miscategorized, or filled in another field wrong. I find that the more you use it, the more it gets dates and titles correct. But I have not found it to do well with hand written notes. For this reason, I don't think you are going to be able to automate your handwritten invoices, without a whole lot of data-entry. Does that help?

I am a 2017 Neat user with A new 2016 desk top with Window 10. This program WAS purchased in 2013, and worked just fine until UPDATE 2016 was installed by the NEAT COMPANY. Every week since the update, I have had nothing but frustrating issues. So here are the most frequent issures: FIRST: Scan the document, WHICH quickly scans 1 single document or up to 15 documents. However, processing the documents WILL take a long time, sometimes (lately Daily) the computer shows a circle rotating up at the top of the computer screen, stating PENDING. This Pending status may take 1 minute up to unknown! Ths is a pain, one small receipt may still be SCANNING, after an hour, during which I am unable to do ANYTHING else with the neat, I am finally so FRUSTRATED waiting, I call NEAT HELP LINE. I explain I am having issues, "Pending status appears frozen". While a document is pending I am unable to scan additional documents or switch tasks to go into other file and up date the fields. Virtually I am FROZEN out of this program. My only solution at this point is to call into the help line, get the help line to delete and start again. It takes a few hours for me to obtain this help. This issue has been my issue since I began using the program in December 2016, which as stated was after the current program up date. The memory slow down (or my thought program "freezes") has now appeared daily, today twice, first thing in morning then after Help line fixed the issue again in the afternoon! I have left the computer running an entire day, hoping the two page document would finally be processed. I have hundreds of pieces of paper work to be scanned into a variety of files. I have limited my choices to Two type of scanned choices: DOCUMENT or RECEIPT Issue #2: After a document is ACTUALLY finished processing, I open the tab to check and correct the fields. When I click on save, I often get a RED circle with an exclamation mark, stating it was not processed. HELP LINE SUGGESTED; "don't let that bother me. They do not know why this is happening to EVERYONE." The people at Neat only tell the customer they are Working on these issues. I find this answer after two months unacceptable. I do not appreciate PAYING a monthly fee for something that doesn't work as originally planned, when purchased in 2013. I do have ONE help representative, and one complaint number, to always get me back to one help desk operator, but it takes her at least an hour to return my call. ANYONE ELSE HAVING PROBLEMS?

Neat Scanner is a "RIP OFF' because after one year of ownership, the user has to pay to use Neat's software monthly fees. The owner of the equipment actually only has the right of use for one year. The worst part of all this after you have purchased the equipment for one year and Neat does not even allow you to use the scanner any more (complete shut down). I hope certain "Business Bureau" will look into this matter because I think the buyer should have some rights too. Remember you can only use the Neat Scanner for one year. It is also very difficult to contact with someone at Neat. I have notify most of retail electronic companies and they were shock. If anyone reads this post and agrees with me, please let all future buyers be aware of this issue. Let's start a movement about Neat will charge a fee for the usage of Neat software after one year.

I do not think Neat Receipts works very well except as a scanner for documents. I have version 5.6. It poorly captures the data on receipts. I haven't used it for a while, but I can't even scan today. It is hooked up, the lights come up green. When I put documents in, a light does not blink. When I press on scan on the computer or on the device, the save as box opens for me to select the folder where I want it to go. Ok fine. So I click save and close the box. Then I click on scan again and the same thing happens. So what is up with that? How do I get this to scan?. Do I need to reinstall the software?

HeyMimi, I follow up reviews before buying this scan. This is a total disaster product!. Just to start, a lot of reviews said that when you update the software, the old one and the new one are not compatible, making impossible the access to the data previous scanned.
@Heymimi
@Heymimi 10 жыл бұрын
J Diez Hi and thanks for the comment! Part of my point of this video is that many reviews are incorrect, and this is another example. When you update the software from 5.4 to 5.5 , there are several warnings alerting that you MUST migrate your data into the newer software. I don't know how big a deal that is, because I was determined to start fresh from 5.5 (I just got the thing last week). And I don't believe that is the case with every minor update. The people complaining, either ignored those alerts or just didn't bother to follow directions. Now, I do agree that the company's failure to make the update process easy and smooth, AND their failure to publicly reply to those reviews to set the record straight -- is really Neat's major downfall. The software could use some tweaking, but Neat's website and inept PR, to help people know what to do is going to kill the product. The product itself is not a disaster at all. But they are obviously not explaining things well and they need to improve that. And make the effort to do some damage control, when people get confused and write reviews that are just plain wrong. I really appreciate your taking the time to comment. Thank you!.

On March 1, 2016, the Neat Company posted an announcement that it is ending support for Neat Desktop as of March 31, 2016. Meaning it will stop fixing bugs and allowing new downloads. If past behavior is any indication, the next OS update will break Neat Desktop but now the company won't fix it. Instead, Neat demands that its customers subscribe to its new cloud software. That's a minimum of $72 per year. Read it and weep: www.neat.com/helpcenter/legacy-support/

@Heymimi 7 жыл бұрын
I made this video 2 years ago and a lot has changed with Neat's software since then. They've switched to something called the "Desktop App" ... I think so that Neat can handle updates directly, bypassing user error. It functions like the old software, except that you have to have purchase a monthly subscription since it is cloud based. I pay $5.99 a month. You can still download and use the old "Legacy" software for free, but they don't offer phone or email support for it anymore. They do have a support forum now for it. Here is what Neat says about the Legacy software: Legacy Software Download Last Updated: Jan 31, 2017 02:30PM EST Please note that you are NOT required to purchase a subscription, support plan, or newest version of Neat software to continue using your Legacy software version. However, there will no longer be bug fixes or enhancements to the legacy versions of Neat software. For those customers who desire to still use these software versions, we provide the following links as is, with no support or warranty available.

@Heymimi
@Heymimi 9 жыл бұрын
Scott Fornwall Yes, I absolutely would buy the wireless NeatConnect. I didn't know about it, when I made my purchase; but the ability to scan receipts completely independent from the computer, and the on-board touch screen is tempting to me. I would really use those features. Especially after using their Neat Cloud service for several months now. The ability to use it anywhere, really removes any excuses not to scan that stack of documents. I could scan a shoebox full of receipts while watching a movie in bed! And then sort them on my iPad. How lazy am I?! Previously, I would have thought it was drawback to have to use their cloud service, but after reviewing other options, I think it's a bargain ($5.99/mo) and the only option that retains all the organizational power of Neat software. I've just discovered that by having NeatCloud, I can use my NeatDesk on multiple computers, and they all sync to one database ... because the cloud service keeps them all current. Now that I'm sold on NeatCloud, I think _someday_ (when I have money to burn) I just might gift my NeatDesk to my sister, and get a Neat Connect. Thanks for asking, Scott! Mimi

Very Nice! What software did you use to make this video with screen capture. Great Job
@Heymimi

Hi Carolyn Gamble Thank you for the nice comment! I use Camtasia Studio 8 for screen capture. It's great for that. I used to use Camtasia for all my video editing; but it's a 32bit program, and would get bogged down if I added too much fancy stuff to the video (titles, transitions, effects). So, I grudgingly switched to Adobe Premiere Pro to edit the videos, because it can take advantage of a 64bit system, and use more of the available memory on my computer. Still Premiere Pro doesn't have a built-in screen capture tool (that I can find). It's another purchase. :-( so I still use Camtasia 8 for screen captures and import it into Premiere. (Sorry if that's more info than you really wanted!) Thanks again for taking the time to comment!

Hi MImi, I like the incorporation of using the iPad and iPhone question do you know if the program allows me to write notes on the file while using either the iPhone or iPad and save it to the file or will I have to type it in.... I ask because I would use it as a realtor and save documents and have the client sign documents and store it and send them a copy immediately. Can this work this way?
@Heymimi
@Heymimi 9 жыл бұрын
Oscar Mejia Hi Oscar, I'm sorry for the delayed reply. It definitely lets you add notes to a file with your mobile device. I will have to check and see what it looks like when it prints out. I would think that the client would have to print out the doc, sign, and snap a pic of the signed document, and then email or message it back to you. You wouldn't want to give them your NeatCloud password! I know you can purchase an upgraded plan that alllows multiple users, but I don't know if there is an option for clients to have limited upload access. But if the client emailed the signed doc image back to you, you can send an email attachment to Neat and it will save it as a document within Neat, or if you prefer, save it as a PDF. Either way, I think, it can be backed-up on NeatCloud. And/Or definitely it could be saved as that PDF in any location or cloud service.

Afjal Hossain I'll test it and report back. I don't see why it wouldn't pick up the printed name. It won't read the signature, but you can fill in the fields or add notes, manually. Neat is the only brand I've tried and never had a reason to switch to another brand. As far as I can tell, Neat does everything its competitors do and more. They all can save as PDF and jpg, but Neat also works with its own organizational software, which I find to be very good. The only reason I would purchase another document scanner, is to buy the wireless version, NeatConnect, which doesn't even require a computer. I'm try hard to resist, but I'm getting very close to buying one!

I could care less out the scanner.. For me the software is the key. Have you noticed version 5.5 having accurate recognition of the relevant dates (even with statements that might have many dates listed) and the company? One thing I find very annoying is that they store all the information in a huge database (versus just keeping the original pdf files). You're on corruption away from massive data loss.
@Heymimi
@Heymimi 9 жыл бұрын
aternoxx Neat 5.5 (or previous versions) does not auto-fill information in on documents, only receipts. But it OCRs every single word and date on every scanned document to make it searchable, and it does a GREAT job of that. You have an opportunity to categorize, add notes, titles or dates to the file, if you want to. I mean, it's not psychic. You have to tell it *something* about how you want to categorize it. But if you scan a receipt (of any size) and put it in the "receipt slot" or tell it that it is a receipt (RECEIPT Button on the screen, not "AUTO"), it will look for a date, store name and dollar total automatically. If there are multiple dates, it may or may not get it right, and that's why you have the review screen, so you can choose the correct purchase date. I find that, the more I scan receipts, the better it gets at knowing where to find the correct date from each store. As I said, it's not psychic. The user has put in SOME effort, especially at the beginning. Regarding storing all the information in one HUGE database: That is your OPTION. You can store each scan separately as a PDF if you want to. You can store it in the database AND back it up as PDFs to save to an external HD or to Evernote or wherever you want to store your backups. This is my point of making this video. So many of these misconceptions keep getting repeated. It's NOT true! If you want the NeatDesk to function just as Snapscan does, and upload everything to Evernote in single pdf files, you can easily do so.
@aternoxx
@aternoxx 9 жыл бұрын
HeyMimi DIY Hmm.. Neat's website says that it does some contextual data grabs from more than just receipts. Might be worth checking again. You don't really need to be psychic to understand what is and is not a bank statement. You might also look at FileThis.com. It OCR's files and can categorize them into different cabinets, automatically tag them, and group by account. That said, I can't say it's an expert. Digital file management is what really separates the boys from the men when it comes to going paperless. Unfortunately, I don't think there are a lot of men yet. :) From what I have read, NeatDesk is close to the best with digital file management but as I mentioned in another response, I worry about locking me into their format. For this reason, NeatConnect is worth looking at... Especially if you can mass down load all the content as individual PDFs... Think about being in a situation where you are paying $15 a month and get laid off from your job.. You may need to stop paying, but you don't want to lose access to your data.
@Heymimi
@Heymimi 9 жыл бұрын
aternoxx I haven't looked into Neat Connect much, because it's $200 more than I paid for NeatDesk. The wireless feature would be really nice to have, but I'm not willing to pay $500 when I'm happy with the system I have. Also, NeatDesk doesn't require any paid monthly subscription at all, unless you WANT your data backed up to their cloud service (and want to use the Neat App on your iPad and/or iPhone). I pay $5 a month for my neat cloud service, which I feel is very fair. Here's the pricing schedule www.neat.com/pricing/compare-best-software/ If you already have an Evernote or Dropbox account, you can back-up to those instead. Eventually, you'll outgrow the free accounts they offer, as the # of scanned files grows. I'm not sure why you refuse to accept that you CAN save any and all documents as individual pdfs, with the neatdesk machine? Not sure why it's so important to you, to prove me wrong. I have a NeatDesk and it does everything I hoped it would do, even better than I expected it to. I save my scans in both formats, depending on what I want to do with them. So, I'm not currently shopping for an alternative, thanks.

Common Sense Hi. No, I didn't buy the extended warranty. I really didn't expect to like it, based the bad rap it has received online. I felt sure I would be sending it back before 30 days was up. But other than the rocky installation, I haven't had a problem. Neat Connect appeals to me, because of the touchscreen and wi-fi features. Those are 2 things I would *love* to have on NeatDesk; because it would allow me to work away from the computer. But Neat Connect is nearly $500, and I only paid $300 for NeatDesk (already more than I felt comfortable spending on another gadget). There's just no way I could bring myself to spend that much, even with the added convenience of Neat Connect. So, I don't have any experience with the Neat Connect machine.

what are your thoughts on the 3 year protection package for $35? thanks
@Heymimi
@Heymimi 9 жыл бұрын
Patti Allred Hi Patti. I didn't purchase a protection plan originally because I expected to try it, hate it and send it back. Knowing now, that I love this scanner, I suppose I would consider it. Depending where you buy the scanner, I'm guessing it comes with 1 year protection already? The listing on Amazon ($349) says this: "Includes* NeatCare- premium support and accidental damage protection for your NeatDesk - for as long as you are a NeatCloud customer." Normally, I would think "well, who is to say I'm going to keep paying $5 a month for the NeatCloud subscription?" But (to my surprise) I have grown to be a big fan of NeatCloud, as well. Once I installed Neat on a 2nd computer, I discovered that Neat Cloud keeps data current on both computers. And I can access it on my iPhone and iPad. All that, makes me feel more comfortable shredding older receipts. I'm pretty confident that I will not be cancelling my NeatCloud subscription. So Hmm, I'm not sure if this answer is helpful to you. It sounds like for an additional 10%, you are buying an additional 2 years of warranty? The way I usually consider whether or not to buy the extended warranty is: I ask myself "Do I think I will be purchasing a newer version of this product in the next 2 or 3 years? When it comes to stuff like printers, cell phones and cameras, the answer is usually "Yes." So, I often decline the extended warranty because it's not that painful to fork out $300 a few years later. If the item is over $500, I get more serious about the warranty. Losing a $800 product after a year is painful! I can see why people are conflicted about whether or not to purchase the 3 yr. warranty on the NeatDesk. It's kinda right on the borderline, price wise ... but who wants to purchase another document scanner every 2 years? I've been reading a lot of reviews on Neat Desk, and paying attention to the way Neat Company replies to them lately. It truly seems to me that they are taking their online reputation very VERY seriously. I think they ignored misleading reviews for several years, and didn't try to refute them; perhaps thinking that the usefulness of the machine and software would speak for itself. My impression is that they are bending over backward to keep customers happy; and going to great lengths to make troubleshooting and get live tech support super easy and quick. I've had to use their "live chat" tech support just once. The tech dude helped me solve the problem in less that 15 minutes, including wait time! My point about that, is if you purchase it somewhere like Amazon, where you can leave public feedback, they always respond to people having problems with their scanner. They often advise them what to do, so Neat can send them a replacement machine. I've never seen them say "too bad, warranty is up. Tough luck!" Well, there are my long winded thoughts on the extended warranty. I wish I could give you a more definitive reply! I hope it helps a little?! Mimi

I need to do an update to my Neat videos. They've changed many things the past year. I use the (wireless) Neat Connect with a $5.99 month Neat subscription, so I'm still very satisfied. But I still have my old Neat Desk, which I've been meaning to test independently of my paid subscription. Neat no longer uses(supports the old legacy Neat software), they've switched to the Neat Desktop App so that they can keep the software up to date without user error. My impression is that, without the subscription and use of Neat Desktop App, you can still use a NeatDesk Scanner. Just as you would the Fujitsu... scan and save as jpg or pdf to Evernote, DropBox or a folder on your hard drive. I am irritated with Neat though, for continuing to sell these scanners without making it abundantly clear that to use the current Neat software, you need to pay a subscription fee. That's for the software to work with it, but the NeatDesk scanner CAN still work without the subscription.

All well and good except your video shows Neat working. And it doesn't. This is THE most annoying, time consuming and EXPENSIVE TO FIX computing disaster I have ever encountered. a YEAR worth of 'assistance' from Neat led to 'Well, sorry but we can't help you'. Neat online is SLOW - at least 10x slower than the 'legacy' software. The auto filing THEY inflicted on me when migrating information online cost me THOUSANDS (and I MEAN THOUSANDS) to fix - I am STILL! 9 months later picking through errors they created. The program crashes FREQUENTLY. The legacy software will crash reliably everytime a double sided page is scanned, at least it's predictable. Online just crashes randomly. I'm not sure which is worse. Then there is the hardware. 50% of the time I get a black stripe through the middle third of the first page. This happened with one previous scanner which I took back, but when it happened again with the new Neat ND-1000 I contacted help and again, guess what - no help available. I am NOT the only one this happens to, the product originally was SO good, but as soon as they messed it up with online (aside from the money they charge - I wouldn't care as long it WORKED!) it became a clunky, buggy messy and infuriating process to be involved with.
