Nebraska Zephyr at 80 mph

For the first time in decades, the gorgeous industrial design of the Nebraska Zephyr is on display at speed on the same rails it used to travel - Chicago to Omaha, NE. The Illinois Railway Museum provided the E5 engine (CB&Q 9911A) and the Nebraska Zephyr trainset, which made two roundtrips through Illinois on 9/22-23. As seen here, the E5 is going the maximum allowed speed of 79mph, but when the engine was built in 1940 its top speed was (and still is) 117mph - higher than the much touted 110mph "high speed rail" Amtrak routes being upgraded in Illinois and Michigan.
Also in the video are two of Amtrak's regional trains to Galesburg and Quincy, IL, as well as a westbound Eola - Tulsa BNSF freight train.

I hope someday that there is an optimism about passenger rail, and the funding to back it, because I believe that would bring the design innovation and talent to make such a superb machine. Hard to be inspired by Amfleets, which copy the narrow confines of a plane in what was a half-hearted attempt to compete.

It’s not possible to do it with 1630. The only live rail connection that IRM has is UP. UP does not permit movement of non-company-owned steam locomotives under steam on their rails. Even if they did allow such movements with permission, 1630 would still not be able to do it. The locomotive is too slow for mainline operation, and has plain bearings. Anything with plain bearings is banned from being interchanged with a class I railroad. On top of all that, the locomotive would need to have PTC installed. It just won’t happen.

@@FFred-us9tw If the cab signals are lacking, that's on the line and not on the train -- EMD E-units had cab signals installed as a standard feature, so if you take her to the Northeast Corridor you can crank her up to max speed!
@FFred-us9tw
@FFred-us9tw 10 ай бұрын
@@agentorange153 Cab signals were never standard features. Always an option that a buyer would spec. And can signals are not universal. As an example, UP, Amtrak, ICG and Metro North all use different systems. You would need the correct cab signals for the line you operated over. And no locomotive can operate as a lead locomotive on the Northeast Corridor unless it has ACSES (Amtrak’s PTC system) in addition to Amtrak compatible cab signals.

@@agentorange153 Interesting difference. Here in the UK signals are all lineside for up to 125mph.
