It was a choice of three stations! Needham Market with 100,648 passengers, Calercruix with 100,404 passengers or Possilpark & Parkhouse with 100,182 passengers in 2017/2018. And fortunately, Needham Market came out of the envelope as the other two are in Scotland ...
Yes, to tie in with 100,000 a trip to a station with (as close as we could get!) the same number of annual passengers was in order. So a trip to Suffolk happened, handy as it involved one of my favourite trips, and a cheap first class ticket, so let's talk about cheap tickets too!
Please leave your tips on what cheap ADVANCE fares you know of down in the comments!

didn't you guys recently get a new railway line called Texrail in Fort Worth? Those Stadler trains looked amazing! The combination of the classic American horn, bell and flashing lights with the european-style train felt very interesting

@@moritzl7065 Dallas/Fort Worth has basically the only commuter rail service in Texas....and it is sadly very under utilized. While they make for fun day trips (I took one recently to go see a film screening), the lack of centralization, and problems with hybrid privatization means dumb problems like the township I live in deciding it didn't want a train because of the "homeless" (not a joke)

You can come to Chicago and ride Metra all day on Saturday and Sunday for a weekend pass for $10 or so. There nearly 500 miles of rail in the system. There's an additional 100 miles of L to ride as well, with daily, 3 day and weekly passes.

£7 Euston to Birmingham (New Street or International) on Virgin is a bargain. Needham Market already has a library and internet cafe at what was the Middle School site, next to the community centre. If I had the money I'd rent the station building and live in it. Needham is a lovely place to live. Congrats Geoff, you deserve it!

Great to see you the other day at Needham Market, and congratulations on reaching the 100,000 subscriber milestone! The Liverpool Street to Norwich train GA run a trolley service in standard class on the busier services. They used to also cover first class, but I suspect they save a fair bit forcing the commuters to walk for their complimentary refreshments! I actually managed to find a photograph from the year 2000 of the Needham Market tunnel between platforms before they enlarged it.

Lovely video. We’re at the next station Stowmarket. Just a little local info, after you went through cattle tunnel, “camping land” has nothing to do with sleeping under canvas! Camping was an ancient and very violent game like football or rugby but with fewer rules! Popular in East Anglia, lots of eastern towns have a camping land or a street with that name. I talk about in a video on my Channel “Secret History of Stowmarket- my walk to work”. But very impressed with your cheap tickets!!! 👍

I love digging for extremely cheap tickets when travelling by train, so here are the best bargains I've got so far: 1. Penzance to London Paddington for 14.40 (this was December 2017 though so this may no longer exist) 2. Sunderland to London King's Cross for 10.85 on Grand Central (GC is usually cheaper than LNER) 3. London Euston to Glasgow Central FIRST CLASS for 46.20 (I checked and this is also possible for 19.80 in 2nd class) 4. London Euston to Inverness by Caledonian Sleeper for 33.00 (for the seat, so it'll be a long night, but still!) 5. London Euston to Birmingham: 3.95 with London Northwestern or 7.25 with Virgin Trains. 6. London St. Pancras Int'l to Berlin for 65 Euros (58 pounds). I know this one's not fully UK but if you book with DB you can get the whole journey (9 hours, 4 countries) for under 60 pounds which I find amazing. All of these (except 6) make use of a 16-25 railcard. Most of these were booked around 1-2 months in advance.

6:58 Needham station was NOT listed for closure in the Beeching Report. Despite this, it was closed on 2nd January 1967 along with Haughley station (also not in Beeching) two stops up the line. Needham was re-opened as Needham Market on 6th December 1971, just under four years after it closed. Haughley was never re-opened, and is still closed today.

Glad you liked Needham Market. It used to be the main Ipswich - Norwich road. It's now nice and quiet. The station at Stowmarket is very similar to that at Needham. Nice to see you went to Westerfield, too - it's in easy walking distance of my house. It has a fascinating old waiting room, on a long disused bay platform, that's worth a look. Congratulations on hitting the 100,000 mark. I've told lots of people about you, on other sites, where someone is interested about the London Underground. I simply tell them to check out 'Geoff Marshall - he really loves and knows the subject'. I hope some of them have. Nice one.

Yay! Right by my house :) If I'd known you were coming this way I'd have popped over to say "Hi!" We're quite proud of our little station even if wheelchair users can only get to one platform... That, apparently, is being worked on though. The old town hall at 07:57 contains one of the best fancy dress/costume shops in the region. Massive range and if you're in the market to buy or rent a fancy dress outfit for a party or something, go see Jem at The Costume Closet! The Pightle (Pronounced "Pie-tull") at 08:01 is where I used to live, and the name means "Triangular shaped area of land for keeping pigs". Also based out of there is Megan who is an amazing beautician and MUA who can travel to you for weddings/prom etc. (If any Subscribers are interested, message me for contact details for the local businesses!) The cattle tunnel at 08:40 takes you to "The Camping Ground" which actually is named after an old form of football, not camping as in tents. Shame you didn't show the lake itself properly as it's a really nice little walk and nature/bird reserve.

Geoff, booking at the right time you can get from bury saint Edmund's (4 stops down towards Cambridge/Peterborough from Ipswich) you can get an advanced single from wakefield west-gate(Yorkshire) to bury saint Edmund's for £8.05! a 3 hour ish journey! (With Rail card) CONGRATS on 100,000 though Geoff, i cant even remember when i started watching but it was a long time ago for sure! i haven't been one to comment but ive been here a long time! You have helped to inspire my love for the British railway! I am also a wheelchair user who heavily relies on trains and public transport so having so many videos on different stations is actually helpful as if i know i'm going somewhere i can look at any video you have made of the place to try and scope it out! So thank you again for helping without even realizing! If you ever need a disabled perspective on travel i would be more than happy to help you!

I wish I had discovered your channel and learned all of your tricks BEFORE we flew from the USA to London. My wife & I were going to go on a first class Virgin Train direct in 4 1/2 hours from London to Glasgow. But it was closer to 10 hours on three trains with no first class service traveling on something we didn't know more about but you call a "bank holiday". To say it was a disaster is not understating and we got no relief or refund of any monies since it was a first class #&*%. Knowing more now I look forward to trying again. I love this Line, as my Nan moved from London to North Walsham 4 years ago. Considering it can cost me around £12+ to get from Dartford to Twickenham for work, I often visit my nan for £9!! And First class for not much more! Whenever I visit her I always buy the ticket to Sheringham or Cromer, as its the same price to Norwich, Yarmouth, Cromer, Sheringham so its worth just getting the ticket to as far as possible just on the off chance you might pop to the coast!!

I used to live in Needham Market for a while, in my parents-in-law's holiday home. A 500+ year old rickety cottage which apparently used to be one of those 'in-house' inns. The railway goes across the road we lived in on a brick bridge at the bottom of the hill. We used the cottage while we were looking for a more permanent home, and it felt like we spent a whole month on holiday! I love Needham for that reason and others. The people are lovely and there's so much more there than you showed. For example, the church on the main road has a roof which is basically an upside-down ship's hull! There are modern housing estates around the edges of the town but the centre has buildings of many eras. It's a really lovely place. You could have shown more of the lake. My kids spent many an hour there feeding ducks and swans and generally letting off steam (no pun intended. Well, not much of one...). I still live in the area (about 20-30 minutes away, in the middle of nowhere. Peace, glorious peace!) and we're just about being considered to be 'proper Suffolk' after just over 25 years LOL! Btw, we also have a (boating) connection to Brundall in Norfolk (and the Berney Arms etc. In fact, we stayed overnight on New Year's Eve-Day moored up at the Arms). Sad to say but the train company is supposed to be turning Brundall station into an unmanned one, which is a diabolically stupid thing to do. It's quite busy, despite its quiet appearance and I dread to think what will happen if we have a bunch of drunk holiday makers moored up in the summer (they'll probably get drunk after mooring, at least I hope so, as there's a really good pub by the station). That is not a good combination at all :( Thought you'd want to keep posted about that one. As for cheap tickets, I'm not sure if it's still possible, but I bought one of my daughters a first class ticket to Swansea from Ipswich for her 18th - it was about 6-7 years ago! - so she could visit her big bro at uni - this is without a railcard for her. Because I got it early, the first class ticket was only a couple of quid more expensive than the standard. It was less than £25 total *return.* I guess you have to book in plenty of time. Congrats on the 100k! You deserve it for such interesting and surprisingly varied videos given the potential to be a narrow subject. Thanks for all your hard work in putting them together and teaching us about the history of the places you visit.

Some great advanced fares I’ve spotted is Newcastle to Carlisle (as cheap as £2 for a seat with a railcard) it’s a beautiful route with some great scenery on the way. Also Newcastle to Whitby for £10-£11 (with a railcard) is also a canny route. I personally think the Newcastle to Carlisle route is bloody great value between two great cities. Sadly there is no market in Needham Market anymore. It's name comes from the fact that it used to be an incredibly wealthy wool town which held regular wool and sheep markets. It's wealth probably also explains why such a small town has such a grand station building.

I've had some good deals on the trains.all payed in advance of course. Last autumn I got a Manchester to Glasgow return for £34 and it worked out being £16 to Glasgow and £18 to get back, this I got through Virgin rail. And again with Virgin Rail, last month I got a one way ticket for my daughter and myself in first class from Bangor to Manchester for £30, worked out being £21 for regular seats with a £9 upgrade fee to first class..

Special offer a few years ago in the Standard - London - Birmingham and back for 50p total by Chiltern - did a midday day trip to sample one of the narrowboat excursions that start from near the Mailbox - normally I'd never have had the chance, as Brum is usually a place I'm heading through to somewhere else - fascinating stuff
