I bought the Mandrill record with "Fencewalk" on it back in 1971. I grew up in a small farm town up north. When I first heard that deep funk line drop, It introduced me to a whole new world of music that influenced & shaped my musical style. I love playing funk, (that was how I managed to survive the disco years). Thank you Santiago for posting all these great Mandrill videos. I wanted to let you guys know you made a big difference in my life & I imagine it did to countless other musicians too

This song still blows my mind all these years later, and seeing it performed FLAWLESSLY live warms my heart even more! The amout of syncopation in the main groove is bananas! That off beat first note on bass sets off a flury of syncopation that still hurts my head trying to keep up with it. OMG!

You know why music was better back then? I know precisely why. There was no artificial, computer generated music then. Bands could perform the music live, and it sounded like the actual studio recording!!! You can't do that with this half fake, synthetic junk we have today. Awesome performance, Mandrill!!!

As a high school kid in the mid 70`s in the Virgin Islands, most of my friends had a Mandrill, Bob Marley or Osibisa Album. It was a great period where most of us became conscious of culture. Another group with a great horn section was Tower of Power, however Fence walk is a classic. WBLS in NYC jogged my memory last week with a birthday celebration and I have listened to the music more than fifty times since. Thank You!

I have listened to this song since it was first released in the 70s when I purchased the album , and I never really wrapped my mind on the lyrics because the music was that good and you sing along not really digesting the meaning of the lyrics, and now, after almost 50yrs, I gasp the message, it's like poetry, I have heard Rachel Mardow use the opening lines so many times on msnbc that I thought that it was her signature piece only to realize that her quote is properly older than her, a song for all ages
