I think this was really his wakeup call moment. He definitely changes his perspective on things from that moment onward. He got to see the fruit of his actions. Negan had good intentions with the Saviors, but Intentions only take you so far. The idea of the Saviors was solething I don't think Negan has any need to he ashamed of. It's the way he ran his business that caused problems and went off the rails. At some point, I think he realized that the he brought the rebellion of the various communities upon himself, and whatever his good intentions were, his way of doing things was how you got people like this doing things Negan himself despised.

It’s not his business, the flashback show him with his dying wife. Negan had to got caught up by the Saviors, he was like Rick from the beginning and it was too late to save Negan. He named his bat after Lucille, he cared for her not the Saviors there is a missing story of why he was so violent. There is a missing link if you go through the seasons again carefully.

Shane told him "The right decision is the one that KEEPS US ALIVE!" but everyone was still holding onto the hope that one day everything would go back to normal. Rick wanted to avoid killing Randal. Shane understood he was a threat and wanted to kill him. Compare that to Rick now who would mercilessly kill ANYONE to keep his group safe. Shane wasn't an idiot. He was a genius.

If he truly knew Negan, he would know that it was basically a cardinal sin for anyone to kill or hurt children. Even when he threatened Rick with killing Carl if he didn't chop off his arm, he knew Rick wouldn't do it, and even if he would have Negan intervened and stopped it because he was just trying to make the point that he has the power now, and Rick doesn't, and that he could do what ever he wants if he choses. This is where he shows Rick mercy.

Ya know what's funny, me and this one buddy of mine tried to justify Negans actions as just. We were edgy teenagers who loved the comics and went through the 'he's just like me' phase before it was a realized thing. With my name being Brandon this episode reminded me how much I stretched the plots of both the comics and the show to make Negan look altruistic.
