I have both the aggressive 30 degree tool and others including negative rake. What do you think though, Sam, is the negative rake not just the same as a, say, 60 degree ‘aggressive’ tool? Or if you had a negative rake tool but the first bevel was 15 degrees and the second shorter bevel also 15 degrees to tool length...would that still be less aggressive than the 30 you have just bought for the club?.... after all, you actually only cut the wood by the very tip of the sharpened edge.

Good to know. I have a Delta 46-460 lathe and I am thinking of buying another chuck. Is the Vicmarc VM 100 a suitable chuck for my lathe and is it of good quality?

Sam, What is the angle of the negative rake bevel? Looks like 45 degrees? Is it important? Thanks, Herms

Thanks. After seeing this I just might have to take a reciprocating saw blade and turn it into a single bevel thin parting tool. I already made a double bevel "negative rake" one in it works fairly well. Have you ever tried using a scraper card burnishing tool for sharpening a parting tool?

Thomas Yes as an old woodworker I have card scrapers and burnishers. I have applied a burr with a burnisher. It works well but....it takes more time and must be done often. I am not sure if it is worth the effort. Sam

Does a NR tool require a burr?

Eric, this is a really excellent question. First of all-this thin parting tool really does not need a burr to work well. I put the additional very small bevel on this tool to make it less aggressive. But a normal NRS-negative rake scraper does work best when there is a burr on the top bevel. You can experiment by turning with and without a burr on one of your NRS's. From what I see here the "Ride The Bevel" rule does not apply to any of these cut off tools. What happens if you do ride the bevel in an attempt to prevent the tip from digging in in a sort of "Catch". For example on your new cut off tool with a 30 degree angle. What would happen if you turn the long end up and ride the 30 degree bevel? Maybe I'm just a "Hard head" and resistant to learning new things. I hope you don't mind attempting to explain this in more detail for all of us hard heads out here.

One problem with turning the tool up the other way is the hangover is greater and does not provide good support. My point in the video is sharpening that secondary bevel is to make the tool less aggressive. I am not convinced this is the cace--or that there is any difference. Sam
