I enjoyed watching this 1948 film on Durham’s Black community. I was in nursery school at the time, but remember many of the businesses from the 50s. The producer should have included Mechanics & Farmer’s Bank and Mutual Savings and Loan, which financed many of the small businesses mentioned. 🤔. Bob Perry

Amazing footage of Durham! Every school in the city and state should be required to watch it. At least during Black History Month.

This film was done several years before my mom started her graduate studies at NCCU. I have two photos of her there along with a cousin. Both were educators.

When you see this glorious community, it makes me sad that it was torn apart by the false myth of "urban renewal".

Hi Elton! Any idea who owns the copyright to that footage. I'd love to use it in a project I'm doing?

Hi there. I don't think it has a copyright. I think it was produced by the US government in I think in the 1040's. I first got it on VHS about 20 years ago. Oops! excuse the typo! It was produced in 1948.

Don Parisher, the producer, is long dead. I suggest contacting Wilson Library at UNC or Duke's library. If your project is educational and not commercial, you might get use permission. Good luck!

This film was produced by the Durham Business & Professional Chain, Durham NC's oldest black business advocacy organization -- not the government.
