Why did so many silent screen and golden age of Hollywood stars flock to Whitley Heights? From Carole Lombard to Francis X. Bushman, from Louise Brooks to Barbara La Marr, they lived in Whitley Heights. Was it the Mediterranean style architecture, designed to keep the inhabitants cool in the southern California heat? Was it stunning views of the canyon, now occupied by Hollywood Highway? Whitley Heights residents attained historical marker status on many stars' homes in the 1980s. Villa Valentino was not among them due to being demolished in 1946.

I lived on Whitley SOUTH of Franklin in the early '90s and only vaguely knew of the history of the Heights. I walked up as far as I could to peer into the neighborhood a few times because I loved L.A. history and the Mediterranean-style architecture. My fantasy would be to live in L.A. in the golden age of the 1920s/1930s/1940s/1950s

That would've been neat. Many photos of Valentino's villa are available online.

A very interesting documentary. Old Hollywood was so beaurltiful then. The houses had such character. Love the information on Rudy Valentino. But he and his wife Natacha hD a bitter divorce in 1925! So when he sadly got ill in August 1926 and at the young age of 31 passed away they were no longer together. 🌹🌹🌹

Thank you. Yes, unfortunately their marriage did not last, but Natacha cared for Valentino even after he died

Very nicely put together, but The Hollywood Hotel was demolished in 1956, not 2001!

Yes, expectations were high: singing, acting, dancing and not just pouting and looking "sexy"

Very interesting film. I was wondering where the location was and you provided that information in detail. Thank you so much. I spent over 50 years of my life in Hollywood. Sincerely I remain at 80 years old living in Los Angeles, Sentebey

H.J. Whitley was concerned about the direction Hollywood was heading in. His concerns proved valid.

It's so sad all this historical places is turned to freeways, parking lots malls,or high rises etc.😢

High rises can be beautiful too - gothic architecture and Art Deco design did it before in NYC and Detroit. We can do it again if we try (zoning board influence, architectural school sanity etc)

It's very sad how so many places in America with it's interesting history, Much sooner than later get leveled to make way for a highway, parking lot or a suburb. Especially Hollywood with all its long standing history of beautiful homes, Movie studio's and famous restaurants. Each with their own decades of history. There are some who care, but the Lions share of money makers in charge care less.

Zoning boards have a huge amount of power. every American should know and write to their zoning board! Historic architecture can be rebuilt - just look at Dresden.
