Neighbours debuts on the BBC

The first episode of Neighbours shown in the early afternoon on the BBC in October 1986. The actual episode is available elsewhere on KZfaq. This is just the really dull context with news, weather, and an ad for the Onedin Line.

Having become a Neighbours fan in Melbourne, I was very interested when it made its debut in London when I was living there in 1986. So I taped it... and kept it... and eventually digitised it...

+David Nichols I'm a Prisoner Cell Block H fan and most actors and actresses from neighbours was in that before this

I love the way it started with the 80s dramatic music. Came in with a bang.

Neighbours moved from the BBC to Channel 5 in 2008.

This was the first day of the BBC's new daytime schedule at the time. Monday 27th October 1986; including here the end of the News and of course the start of Neighbours. Of course at this time beforehand it had mostly been Pebble Mill At One, which was cancelled to make way for the new schedule oddly though too.

Wow good to see this from the very beginning it includes the instrumental version of the theme tune without lyrics. I want to how many episodes after this the episodes had the lyrics in the opening. X

In all fairness our local BBC 1 Midlands announcer still does: 'This is BBC 1 in the Midlands, now is The News'

This is a great clip, I remember watching this episode at the time as a 9 year old boy. Out of interest (and its a long shot) do you happen to have any clips of Knots Landing from this era when it was finally shown here in the UK after an absence of 3 years?

from the point where Max slams the car door (at 4:54), about 47 seconds is edited out - the footage missing shows all the characters coming out of their cars laughing at Danny - it was probably deemed as being too scary for children due to it's daytime showing.

Yeah i have noticed that too. I thought it was just cut when they repeated the first 5 episodes to celebrate 2000 episode but did not know they cut the first showing.

@@stevenryder8803 When they repeated those first five episodes on BBC1 Northern Ireland, it was the uncut version they aired. There were also many scene transitions which were edited differently to the BBC UK versions. I wish I'd kept my copy of it that I recorded at the time, as I could have posted it up here now to show the differences.

Everyone thought this show would fail within two years. Shows what they knew! Yes the ratings may have since dipped (due to a lot more channels and multiple showings of the same episode every day) but its social media profile is pretty high and the cast still get a damn good reception whenever they come ehre
