DisgruntledVet 11B - it affects everything, not just field goals! and it’s not bullshit - if you don’t believe it, take a ball in your hands, get on a spinning kids roundabout at your local park and throw the ball from the centre straight out. Then repeat without the roundabout spinning. The difference in trajectory the ball follows is due to the same effect, but on a scale you can see. PS it’s the same effect that makes cyclones rotate - and the water going down the plug hole in your sink!

This is one of the best interviews of Tyson that I've seen. What a great interviewer. Usually when people interview Tyson, they're either too dumb to understand (or care) what he's saying and just nod along and go through the motions or they're nerdy sycophants that drool all over him or they're somewhere in the middle where they feel intimidated by him and try and elevate themselves by throwing in little tidbits of knowledge that they have to desperately cling on to his level. Katie was none of these things. She wasn't afraid to get her nerd on but was equally unafraid to poke fun at both herself and him. Such a chill interview. It made for a refreshing watch. Thanks Katie, you've just earned yourself a subscriber.

Let tell you about a man who died and met Saint Peter at the pearly gates. Realizing Saint Peter was a wise and knowledgeable person, he said, "Saint Peter, I have been interested in military history for many years. Tell me who was the greatest general of all times?" Saint Peter quickly responded, "Oh, that's a simple question. It is that man right over there," as he pointed nearby. The man said, "You must be mistaken, Saint Peter. I knew that man on earth. He was just a common laborer." "That's right, my friend," replied Saint Peter. "But he would have been the greatest general of all time -- if he had been a general." The point is, you don't know what people can do unless they do it.

A serious question here. The earth is a closed system and it's moving and rotating in a constant speed, so what ever goes on inside earth should not be affected by the earth's movement? Just like if you're sitting in a plane that flys a constant speed of 300 knots in smooth conditions and you throw a ball up, it land right back in your hand it's not affected by the plane's movement. So,, what am I missing here?
@DANGJOS5 жыл бұрын
+ UV0023 You're missing the fact that what you said is only true in an inertial frame of reference. Because the Earth is rotating, it means we are travelling in a large circle at 1040xcos(latitude) miles per hour. Circular motion is not inertial. Now since the speed is 1040xcos(latitude), it means that the speed changes as you move north-south. So as the ball is kicked north-south, it is travelling at a higher or lower speed (depending on where it was kicked) and therefore falls behind or forward the new rotation speed and is deflected slightly because of this.
@UV00235 жыл бұрын

So, the ball being in the air for 5seconds can be effected by the earths rotation 1600km per hr (faster than the speed of sound). Yet a plane travelling from east to west or west to east and it's not effected?

Earth rotates on its access, orbits the sun, sun orbits black hole of Milky Way, galaxy shooting through the universe, four different motions in four different directions at ridiculous speeds each one, and yet? We’ve seen the same stars/constellations in the firmament for Eons, they all rotate pivoting on Polaris in ONE circular motion, NOT FOUR… how’s this posible Neal? Anyone?
@mfinn51465 жыл бұрын
Wouldn't the direction you lean a kick in the Pats' stadium depend on toward which goal post you were kicking?
@Fletch67 жыл бұрын
The kicker, the ball, the field goal, and the whole stadium are all moving with the spinning earth and the atmosphere. There wouldn't be any significant effect on the spinning of the earth except for any decoupling that takes place between the earth and the atmosphere at a height of 20 feet.
@mydogiscalledoscar7 жыл бұрын
How does he know the kicker wasn't making the same calculations and adjusting appropriately.... 🤔
@thomasalias84925 жыл бұрын
Because if he DID calculate, the ball would've gone through the center. Not make it by half an inch.
@Egofever7 жыл бұрын
Maybe I misunderstood, but I think that was incorrect. The ground doesn't rotate underneath you if you jump, and the atmosphere rotates with the earth. Right? A flight taking off from the north pole doesn't see the earth spinning faster and faster if it heads south... does it?

Well that's a serious issue then if the atmosphere isn't moving with the Earth as we're told. Please explain why flights going One direction are incredibly faster than coming back the other way if we are going with the rotation of the earth one way and then going against it the other way. We'll do that one for starters
@Anonyoussisbeke5 жыл бұрын
I dont see the point, how could earth's rotation influence the ball but through air currents which neil had no chance of calculating at that moment , The air currents inside the stadium could not possibly be calculated by him unless there were devices installed for that purpose in the stadium , Can anybody plz explain what exactly neil calculated

The earth's rotation is acting upon the ball, the player, and everything in the stadium. So it would not have an effect on the trajectory. I think that is call inertial reference like when a the train beside you starts to move and you think it is your train that is moving.
@abhishekmewar6715 жыл бұрын
Wrong coriolis force only acts on objects on a rotatory motion with respect to an inertial reference frame which in this case is Earth.

If the earth's rotation can have that effect on a football, how are tennis players so precise with their shot placement?
@50thstateofmind375 жыл бұрын
So once the football detached from Earth, the earth's rotation was a bit responsible for the ball to go through the goalposts? Basically saying if the earth wasn't rotating, the ball would not have gone through the goalposts. Shouldn't we be able to get on a helicopter,hover over the earth and let our destination come to us ?

@crazyplayer10006 жыл бұрын
One immediate comment: Coriolis is a real effect, no doubt. It does affect objects moving freely on Earth. An airplane is not free, it adjusts itself through a rudder. That is the main reason. HOWEVER, this little story from NDT strikes me as a little stinking. I do not believe that the effect would be visible: ball velocity is too low, and it travels for too short a distance to notice it. But it is an example how Coriolis works. I guess he did it for educational purposes
@berengerchristy62566 жыл бұрын
its there, its effect on this situation is just minuscule. I'm sure that you could demonstrate the coriolis effect on field goals with a properly set up experiment. idk how you'd set it up though

This is ridiculous if a football going to a goal post makes that much difference in the Earth's rotation and how in the hell can a plane possibly land on a Runway that's moving
