📖 For a lot of people black holes and string theory were topics that were filed in the mental box labelled ‘things I will never be able to get my head around”. However, all changed when Neil deGrasse Tyson began appearing on TV screens.

I am a huge admirer of Neil, and I really loved the things he said here... but still, I have to disagree with his point of view. I don't see how our lives could be less valuable because we stop aging. In the case of the plastic flower, it doesn't have much value because it's simply not as beautiful and doesn't smell like the real one, and not because it's "inmortal". In our case, I think our lives will be MUCH more valuable when being alive would mean that we will have the oportunity to discover every single mistery of the universe, travel to other galaxies, transform our own species for the better many times, etc... we will be much more meaningful when we realize that we will still be here in 100.000 years, because we will care more about the future, about how we treat others and about just doing what we love instead of doing what we have to in order to survive (like accepting to have a shitty job because you need the money to feed your family and yourself, for example).

Because your life is on a scale of decades, it brings urgency and purpose. People take degrees, make families, travel to see beautiful places, etc before they get too old. It drives them. If you lived for 10.000 years, why bother doing anything today? Or tomorrow? You'd have pleeeeenty of time - and I think that is the point. Having all that time alive will decrease drive and human invention. It will make you a couch potato, for lack of better terms. The FACT that your time is very limited is key and it's what drives us to make meaningful connections and life choices - because they matter and how you spent your time matters in the now. The flower analogy he makes is absolutely spot on for me. “Death is what gives life meaning, to know your days are numbered, your time is short."
@ulises5029

@@henrikhoppe8607 You may have a point, but it largely depends on the mindset of each individual. Yes, every important decision we make in life is connected to the acceptance that we are going to die at an age of around 80. It's been always like that (except that just a hundred years ago that number was way lower). But the fact that it's always been like that, doesn't mean that it can't change. It doesn't mean that we can't change it. It's difficult to imagine the whole new structure that society will have once we achieve this. Everything we do, and everything that motivates us to get up in the morning and do good things with our time will be different. But I don't see a reason to believe that the motivation to do anything will disappear. You asked why would you do anything meaningful today if you know you're gonna live for 10.000 years... Maybe because even without aging we will still be able to get bored if we don't do anything. We will still want to travel, have friends and family, and more than anything, we will keep wanting to explore the universe and it's mysteries. We still have thousands, or maybe even millions of years to discover everything that there is to be discovered.

I said something similar under someone's comment. It's just, so many humans are useless and their life would be meaningless if all they do is the same useless stuff they do now. Innovators, scientists, medical, engineers and anyone of an import career who want to contribute to the human future should have the option to live past the usual. Because everything you said is 100% valid and is important to so many of us.

I think your reasoning is off- when you give a bouquet of flowers, they were live UNTIL you cut them. you are giving a gift of something beautiful, but it is dead. How long you can keep them under the illusion of still being alive is one way of showing how much you appreciate the fact that they were alive. Appreciating and respecting life (our natural planet that created us,) is what gives meaning to being alive

He miss the point about living forever as there s nothing about this if we reach lev. Reaching lev means you won t die from aging. He talked about being hit by a bus and after about not dying..that s a contradiction. What would happen in an ageless world is avoiding the suffering of aging,years after years of painful declining,the plenty of diseases associated with senescence who makes somebody to want to die. For sure death would still be there from non aging cause so the argument of life without death has no point.

1:10 Clearly Neil does not understand how increasing life *expectancy* works. Because how would we "achieve escape velocity from death" when we increase life expectancy by just one year but not when we increase it by 10 or 20 years? Life expectancy is not a countdown timer like in the Justin Timberlake movie In Time; it's just an expression of statistics and probabilities across a wide range of people.

Of course. Existential issues are not going anywhere. However, longer lives will give us more time to confront existential issues through advances in neuroscience and neurotech - because all this stuff arises due to the way our brains are terribly wired - so that we will be free of the fear of death. This science is actually advancing _faster_ than the science of longevity, and a lot of amazing stuff is coming down the pipe fast or is already here, like the resurgence of psychedelic research. Also, I don't buy Neil's "death gives meaning to life" deal that so many people have. A lot of people know that they're going to die, and don't value their lives any more because of it. LIFE gives meaning to life. If you can't find meaning in life without constantly reminding yourself that it ends, then you're not going to be able to find meaning in it knowing that it does.

I am not religious. However, doesn't it say in the bible that the soldier who struck Jesus right before Jesus died was cursed to live forever or at least until the return of Jesus? The only way that immortality could work successfully would be that there would be no more children being born.

That we will live forever is not a foregone conclusion. Secondly, unless someone changes our species, then I do not see a logical basis for saying that the lifespan of our species has ever changed. I think that someone would have to change the species in order to do that. Average life expectancy in the US reflects many things. Historically, the largest would be infant mortality. In 1800, 50% of the population died before they were 5. That had a really big impact on average life expectancy. There is disease, and wars, and medical technology. We have evidence to support that people who live in glacial runoff areas commonly live to be over 100, possibly due to getting all of the minerals they need. That said, maybe they exhibit the real life expectancy of humans, when not dying prematurely, like the rest of the world. Eh?
