"Star Wars" lightsabers are a novel idea. They're lightweight, portable, and their laser-like beams can cut through just about anything. Unfortunately, the reality isn't so simple. Astrophysicist and "StarTalk Radio" host Neil deGrasse Tyson explains how the fictional blade would work in real life.
Produced by Christine Nguyen, Darren Weaver and Kamelia Angelova. Additional production by Rob Ludacer.

Star Wars is not the future Neil. Star Wars is the past. The opening scroll says " A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away."

@@judasaservantofjesus3145 the star wars galaxy is not our galaxy. They have developed on a different time scale and share / trade technologies with billions of other species and planets.

"The future" in the sense of their technological progress, as their civilization is/was/had existed way older than civilization on Earth.

"A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...." Neil, Star Wars is not in the future. It's not science fiction. It's fantasy.

+Henri Alphonse is light years as a unit of time here a reference to parsecs from the original trilogy, is it a matter of speech or god forbid you think a light years is actually time?
@henria7393

Light years as a comparison, something that is a light year away is a very large distance, and differences between us and their technology is "a very large distance" not that hard to understand.

A light year is a measured unit of distance not time. The term you're referring to is the informal definition of the phrase.

Because Force users skilled in Soresu will easily block the blaster beams - engaging them in a prolonged lightsaber duel will prove to be more effective in the long-term.

Because lightsabers is a formal weapon of a jedi, not as clumsy or random as a blaster.

Blasters can be used by any one but it takes a certain skill, elegance, and force power to properly weird one of the most powerful weapons in the galaxy. This answers his question.

Haven't you seen Obi Wan and other Jedi block all those laser blasts from the droid army? That's how they take out most of their enemies other than Sith lords. Deflecting them back at themselves.

What do you actually mean by this statement? Because its pretty obvious that a story is not the same as a process of analyzing observations. Do you mean that Starwars inaccurately uses concepts based on science?

I think the shooter guns used for distance targets probably use up more gamma ray energy faster, as opposed to light sabers, so maybe that's why Jedi knights use light sabers instead, since they are constantly on the move and get into close encounters with enemies....?

they can manipulate the "force" ... that prevents useless storm troopers who can't aim to not fire their blasters directly at them

Almost all the characters who use lightsabers are the Jedi and Sith. Everybody else uses guns. So it's basically religious reasons.

George Lucas has confirmed that the light sabers don't use photons but instead use plasma and electromagnets to contain the plasma in a tightly-knit arch that appears to just be a single, solid beam.

I guess it would be like a serious case of amazing swordmanship melee, coupled with telepathy. Which if you think about. Really its almost in my eyes like a really badass ufc fight but with everything i mentioned it seems like it would take a skilled master to accomplish. Then again I'm high as balls rn. What do i know? 🤣

Come on, Neil... You're losing fans. Starwars has plenty of interesting scientific concepts to analyze and talk about. It might not all be accurate or possible, but thats because its a damn story. He's probably just upset about the hints of an afterlife in the Starwars universe.

It doesn't matter how fast they go the way Jedi block blaster bolts (lasers) is by using the force to predict where the bolt will land and blocking that area (this is also how they duel)
