What Neil said about the song:"It’s a song of dying alone.I was struck by it when my grandparents passed away…that they did die alone…that they weren’t with their children when they died. And a year and a half ago when I was in London for the first time, I passed a shop and I saw this beautiful table in the window. It was carved by hand and for some reason the two things came together"

My former husband died last month. He would have been 75 next Tuesday, September 20. Together we raised 4 boys - and he died alone and I alone attended his military burial on Friday at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery. I have been a big fan of Neil Diamond and Morningside kept coming to my mind. When I finally played it - it broke my heart and cannot stop crying. Thank you, Neil, and James, that song was written for you. RIP

I lost my childhood and being the person I am everytime I think about it it rips my soul apart, like ive lost a part of me and no matter the feelings and longings and stupid fantasies its never coming back..the greatest childhood I could ever offer to anyone if they ever wanted a good one! I would die for it..gladly!!! Silly 53 year old with such strong and vivid memories and sentimentalities that are too strong for his own good.. I grew up with Neil Diamond playing at the parties and the barbecues my parents went to..the greatest 10 years of my life..the pinnacle! And when you've reached that there's only one way after cause you cannot keep the greatest thing that has ever happened to you alive forever, except in your memories which will never equal what once was.. I'm sorry for your loss and hope the pain goes and just the good memories remain.. Dean

@@deanfraser419 Any day you are alive has potential to be the greatest day ever. This is indeed a sad song but i don't consider it a hopeless one. More of a cautionary tale to not let it happen again. to spend time with your family, to teach your children how to CREATE (yeah they will resist you, especially if you burst into their rooms while they're playing their dumb video games with something new and unusual) but the trick is to raise them in such a way that you're always together, always doing something together.... we have a small window of opportunity when our children are young. they start out programmed to ONLY want us, mom and dad, brother and sister. they cling to us because it's natural. society at some point will insist on prying them away from you, saying it's NOT normal for kids to want to spend so much time with their parents. to hell with society. Family is the most important thing in our lives. our jobs and careers? No. FAMILY is the reason we need jobs and careers. Not so we can support a bunch of freeloading politicians and moochers living off our taxes. If families were strong to begin with, we wouldn't have any moochers. Their families would be supporting them through the hard times. There are so many people left adrift, rudderless and alone, all because they were never given the gift of time. Time that was spent with their loved ones. By the time they are five years old they're packed off to school where they are raised by total strangers, in rooms filled with children their own age, all wishing they could be with their families. Then we wonder why kids today are so apathetic, mean and ignorant of basic human emotions. You may have had the best childhood, mine wasn't perfect but i enjoyed a lot of it. The parts i didn't enjoy all had to do with family pushing me away because they were busy. i remember how that made me feel. And I promised I wouldn't do that to my own children. Much to my surprise my little experiment worked. my kids had a fantastic childhood. they learned things (things I learned from my grandparents - who were also pushed away because THEIR kids were busy) we had adventures, made friends, have stories to tell. they're not afraid to talk to people or go to new places or give their time to kids who are younger than they are.. And they are teaching THOSE kids what they learned. It turns out it's pretty darned easy to break a cycle that is not working and replace it with a better one that is tried and true. Family.... it starts with two people willing to make a commitment. You are not raising children. You are raising adults. Childhood is brief, you should want them to grow up and be happy, balanced and responsible (children are rarely happy, balanced and responsible lol) And the bonus here is you get to experience childhood all over again through YOUR kids and eventually through your grandkids! Get down on the floor and PLAY with them. Go outside and explore with them. My dad rarely did any of that with me but I remember when he did. I remember wishing it was more often. So that's what I gave my kids. It's not too late.

My father actually did die alone. He had a heart attack as he was driving home. He was almost 53 much too young to die. I'm so glad he didn't suffer but it always bothered me that he was alone and we didn't get the chance to be with him at his time of death. Fortunately, he did manage to pull the car over to the side of the road so no one would get hurt. There were two young men driving behind him and saw him pull over. They pulled over also but when they got to his car he was slumped over the wheel. He was the best father anyone could ask for. I still miss him, even though I'm almost 73.

30 years ago Aug 22 1985 my dad died of cancer. He was a carpenter. This song is for you dad...I love and miss you so much.

Indeed a very sad song but I see it as a warning. I actually spent time with my grandparents when I was growing up and craved learning something from them. They thought their skills and knowledge were archaic for modern times but i knew they were wrong. I had a feeling that by the time i was an adult I would have use for their knowledge. and i was right. My grandad taught me how to grow a garden, how to train my dog, how to shoot a gun, how to fish, how to drive, how to TALK to people. My grandmother taught me even more about gardening, how to have confidence in myself, how to sew, how to cook, how to love others. I never would have learned any of that from my parents. they were too busy. They didn't even learn any of those things from their own parents. And that brings everything around to how valuable your family is, and the time you spend with them. Your job is not important. It only exists to provide funds to pay bills and buy food....and pay your taxes. Taxes that go to people who don't have families or jobs. But if they did..... they wouldn't need those taxes. Other people are benefitting from the fruits of your labor, everyone except your family. society insists on stealing your children, their childhood, at the age of five. in order to train them to be yet another cog in a machine that only benefits corporations and politicians, NOT families. Why even bother having children at all if you wont or can't raise them yourself? Yes this song is a warning. This old man had a skill that died with him. Now that skill is taken for granted as machines build everything. Machines in oppressive foreign countries where it is impossible to have a family because greedy selfish government demands more until they consume the life of that person. It is a vicious ugly and evil cycle we're all forced to live in. But it's worth it to escape. Turn off your phone or laptop. Go spend time with your kids or grandkids. Go outside, build a fort. play games, relive your childhood. You can still play music though.... i believe music holds the key to time travel. a simple song can send you flying back in time at lightspeed, recalling memories and emotions with a snap of your fingers. Don't let your grandparents skills die with them.

Started listening to Neil while in high school. My mom's favorite artist. She took my sister and to a concert of his in Maryland. As I got older, I really appreciated his music more and more. Ended up taking her to.many sold out concerts around the Maryland D.C area. No one can match his talent, song writing, or vocals. Thank you Neil for bringing such great times with my mom and I. Wish you well.

There are so many meanings and interpretations you could take from this song. On the surface it reminds me of my father who was a carpenter - but it hints at lost or unrealised gifts and talents, lack of appreciation of people until they are gone, missed opportunities . It is just so deep. Just a superb song and one that I have enjoyed for over 30 years

Dit liedje was het eerste dat we draaide toen mijn vader overleden was. Zijn moeder is 26-12-'99 overleden om half 10 's avond en de volgende ochtend om 6.30 had ik geen vader meer, hij is 50 geworden. Hij is oudjaarsdag gecremeerd en dit was het eerste liedje, hij had het zelf uitgekozen, voor zijn kinderen. Het is nu ruim 8 jaar geleden en mis hem nog elke dag, en als ik dit nummer hoor moet ik heel hard huilen.....

Neil brings the realization that we all have open books in our Life. This song brings to the forefront the meaning of Love and personal Conviction. The gift and Loving Memory revolved around a Table that an Elderly man had built for Family. It was his legacy yet it was in his loneliness he died, and his only gift to remind them was a Table he built to commend his love for his Children.

@@dwightdodd3734 it is the same with me....now I am nearly 64 years old. N.D. songs belong to my life. He must be 80 years old and he is suffering from Parkinson's disease. I have seen him in concert 10 years before here in Germany. It was always my wish to see him in concert and I am happy and thankful that I could make it.

I had the good fortune of seeing Neil perform in the 80's at Toronto's Maple Leaf Gardens. When he sang this song, thousands of people lit lighters. It was very impressive as the whole concert. Neil performed non-stop for 2 hours and 40 minutes and encouraged a lot of audience participation. My husband said we will never see another concert as great and he was right.

Every time i hear this beautiful song i think of my Mothers brother who came back from Sandakan a different man whol lived with us he was a beautiful carpenter taught by the army he turned to alchohol and was angry not to us but got involved in many a drunken fight but his love was in his hands out the back in our sleepout he made the most beautiful furniture died aged 52 ye Patrick thanks neil for a beautiful song

My father built a wonderful wooden table for me and my family. Unlike the figure in Diamond's song, he did not die alone. We were there with love and respect for all that he was and did for his children and for so many others. This song well captures his love of craft and family and whenever I hear it, my thoughts return to his quiet self-effacing ways, courage, and devotion to family, country, and God's good ways. He was an extraordinary man who is dearly missed.

Forget 'In The Living Years by Mike and the Mechanics' (although it is indeed a fabulous song), this beautiful song; ‘Morningside’ by Neil Diamond will definitely 'touch' anyone who needs to be re-connecting with their old folks whilst there is still time. For those of us who are still lucky enough to have elderly parents or relatives, this song does a brilliant job of reminding us not to forget how precious they are and not to waste the opportunity that exists right now to show them our hearts.

I used to listen to his songs when I was a little boy. I remember he dropped some thoughts on one of his covers of LP (long play records at speed 33 ;-) stating that he wished if not all but some of his songs may be remembered and looked upon as masterpieces (comparable to Beethoven or Mozart). That would make him proud... As far as I am concerned, I whistle his tunes every now and then as they are simply unforgettable. Parts of my youth. Morningside is one of my all time favourites. Thx

As far as I am concerned,Neil made it.............this is most certainly a Masterpiece !!!!!!!!!!! as are MANY of his others
