All my friends were huge clutch fans after listening to "Transnational..." and "Clutch". You could tell "Clutch" was bluesier but we were all still on board. When "Elephant Riders" came out, we all had to come to terms with the fact that Clutch was evolving. "The Soapmakers" and "Rites Of Spring" still felt like what we were used to but, it really did feel like a different band. It broke some of our hearts that they lost that angst. "Juggernaut" is still one of my favorite angry Clutch songs.

I'd like to tell my Binge and Purge story. This goes back about seventeen (or more) years. Even that long ago, Clutch was known to never play Binge and Purge anymore, because as Neil had said, people in the crowd would just get too damn violent - and I remember reading several posts on the pro-rock message board that alluded to this. Anyway, rewind to ~17 years ago in New Jersey at a place called the Birch Hill (long closed down). In the 90's and early 00's Clutch still attracted some racist bonehead types to their shows who would kind of just cause problems, especially in the pit. I distinctly remember some Nazi dudes in the mosh pit taking their shirts off after a few songs and prominently displaying their Aryan nation and swastika tattoos for all to see. One dude was about six and a half feet tall and had a giant black swastika on his chest. So these Nazis go to work kind of picking on people and starting fights for a few songs, and soon after no one is able to enjoy themselves anymore. At some point Neil says something to the effect of, "Well New Jersey, I have heard that you guys have some pretty hardcore moshpits in this state... So let's see what you can do," and the beginning notes of Binge and Purge start. The first three or so minutes of the song go without incidence. It was obvious that everyone was waiting for the heavy part. Once it kicked in the crowd erupted, and like telepathy, we all turned on the Nazi dudes at the same time. It was a total blur but by the end of the song the Nazis were on the ground and bloodied red. I distinctly remember the visual of the now-unconscious six and a half foot tall swastika dude being carried out by like three bouncers with a trail of blood leaking onto the floor from his face. Done and done. To this day I like to think that Clutch saw these Nazis bullying everyone and played B&P on purpose to amp the crowd up and give us a chance to retake the pit. A historic moment in my show-going career. Thanks for reading.

And right there is the difference of REAL metal and that stuff which he refers to as showbiz (you know, the bands which are made and labeled to fit the taste of the mainstream to generate and provide financial liquidity mainly for the others but not the artists). I think that is also the thing, which holds the metal community together. Its always heart blood in the work and you do not sell yourself to a trend.

+Brian Chicano you may not have understood the question. For almost two decades, fans have relentlessly screamed to hear this song from the crowd. It was more of what made this phenomenon occur and what was their take on it. If you listen to transnational then psychic back to back, the evolution of the sound is clearly evident. They haven't made any additional pummeling, frat rock fist fight anthems since. It only makes sense they don't want to continue to play them.
