MUSIC: Neil Sedaka / LYRICS: Phil Cody
Released in the U.S. in the Fall of 1974, "Laughter in the Rain" reached #1 on the Billboard Top 100 chart on February 1, 1975. It was Sedaka's comeback hit in America (after a string of hit singles in the early 1960s), and the first of several 70s hits for him. The song had previously been a hit in England, where it was first released.
Audio: The 1974 single version
Video: Neil's live performances on "Sedaka in Concert", and a 1983 BBC broadcast

February 10th 2012 I was diagnosed with lymphoma cancer I was also given a 10% chance that I would survive! 4 days into my hospital stay it had rained outside and I remember asking God, you get me out of this sane and alive and I will never take for granted another rainy day. Well I survived cancer and I'm coming up on my 10-year anniversary and with keeping my promise when it's storming outside I still find laughter in the rain! Still listening January 29th 2022 ❤️🎶❤️

On Friday, December 7,1974 I went out on my first date with my wife to the North Forty in Ithaca. I took her home at about 2:00am. Went home and couldn’t sleep. At about8:00am I missed her so much I went over to her apartment woke her up, she got dressed and we took a nice long walk through the streets of Cortland,NY in a slow steady drizzle. We were so in love and this song had just come out and we to this day feel like it was written for that day! Got married on August 9, 1975! Thank you Neil Sedaka!

I grew up in public housing on the southside of Chicago, aka "Hell on earth". But my dad always had WLS on the radio in the morning before he went to work. Music like this helped this black kid get through the madness of growing up in the projects in the 70's with a level head. So much great music in that decade, both black and white.

@@RasCricketSmallAxe Yes, and as you say; "back to the roots", in the case of the 70s, then we know that there is something called age! Well, it used to be better, because we're still the ones who get it! A special spirit, traits, drive and visions. We just have to get it again! 😇

I grew up NW burbs of Chicago in the 70’s as well. I used to watch my dad shave while WLS was on the bathroom radio. But after he left I turned on WBMX for some soul and dance music. I never saw color in music in the 60,70,80,90’s. Which is why we all lived peacefully and with respect. Unlike today’s so called music. We are divided and unfortunately today’s music isn’t bringing us together. We need Marvin more today than ever before.

Exactly, and with a career spanning six decades, Neil Sedaka both a gifted songwriter and top-selling artist, was never inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame which is a travesty in comparison to the lack of talent today who can't sing even with auto-tune or know what a chord is.

@JoeNicks389 Then, the people in charge should change the name of the awards. If it's not Rock & Roll, it's not Rock & Roll. Just call it Music Hall of Fame. Country music has no relevance to Rock & Roll. Similar to Jazz vs. Rock & Roll, Disco vs. Rock & Roll, etc. They're different genres = not the same. Anyone can say, "Well, it's music," but if people want to honour someone by inducting her or him to Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, it better be a Rock & Roll musician. If he or she isn't a Rock & Roll musician, then it's obvious (to people who don't need a reality check) that the person involved doesn't belong there. Simple

And you probably have, believe it or not, Sir Elton John for it. Back in the early 70's, Neil's career wasn't going very far due to the music climate at the time and Elton was like a major Neil Sedaka fan. They happened to bump into each other at a party or a convention or someplace like that and Elton had, at the time, his Rocket Records (his vanity label like Apple was for the Beatles, Grunt Records was for the Jefferson Starship, etc) and when Elton found out Neil didn't have a record contract said come over and record for me. He did and the first song released from those sessions was Bad Blood which Elton did background vocals on (which is kind of obvious if you pay attention during the chorus) and I believe it hit #1. Not long, Laughter in the Rain came out and was a major #1 hit. I almost want to say Elton did background vocals on that song to and I think I MIGHT hear them but not 100% sure. I am sure he didn't but still would not be surprised if he did and the vocals are just kind of buried deep in the mix as I am sure Elton might not have even wanted Neil to have two hits in a row with his (Elton's) background vocals on it being obvious with the way I heard Elton's ego was at least at the time. Kind of like, love ya mate but not at the risk of my OWN career!! lol Personally, I like both songs but think Laughter is a WAY better song than Bad Blood was and will listen to that song 10 times in a row before I listen to Bad Blood once. That's my story and I am sticking to it. :)

He had already recorded the song but it hadn't been scheduled for release yet. He called Elton and asked him to release his version within 5 days and Elton did that. Neil's version quickly overtook the other one and ended up hitting #1 on the Feb. 1, 1975 Billboard Hot 100 chart.

The 70s was, in my opinion, the greatest decade of music with incredibly talented musicians who performed for audiences who loved and enjoy their music. God bless the music and artists of the 70s, they were really great musicians with superb songs! My favorite music today in 2021 still is the 70s as well as the 50s, 60s, 80s and 90s……and nothing beyond that. The music today in the 2000 is just for the birds; nothing and no artists of today can be compared to the ones in yesteryears. Long live the 70s and its music, the greatest music ever. 🙏🙏🙏🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌👍👍👍👍👌👌👏👏👏👏♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️

Strolling along country roads with my baby It starts to rain, it begins to pour Without an umbrella we're soaked to the skin I feel a shiver run up my spine I feel the warmth of her hand in mine Oh, I hear laughter in the rain, Walking hand in hand with the one I love Oh, how I love the rainy days and the happy way I feel inside After a while we run under a tree I turn to her and she kisses me There with the beat of the rain on the leaves Softly she breathes and I close my eyes Sharing our love under stormy skies Oh, I hear laughter in the rain, Walking hand in hand with the one I love Oh, how I love the rainy days and the happy way I feel inside I feel the warmth of her hand in mine Oh, I hear laughter in the rain, Walking hand in hand with the one I love Oh, how I love the rainy days and the happy way I feel inside Oh, I hear laughter in the rain, Walking hand in hand with the one I love Oh, how I love the rainy days and the happy way I feel inside

One of the best chorus entries in pop songwriting history. When it hits that key change going into “ooo...I hear laughter in the rain...”, it takes off like a rocket! And Neil’s voice is perfect for that moment. Brilliant! Thank you Neil and Phil for this great hit! 🎶❤️

Exactly! That key change up a min 3rd lifts the chorus beautifully. A nice discreet shift back into the original key for the next verse allows him to repeat the trick for the subsequent choruses.
