Whats this human mania with ranking things? Can't we just enjoy what these remarkable artists have to offer? I'm 52 now, and have been listening to Dylan & Young since I was in my teens. My life would have been diminished with the absence of either one. Peace out.

Neil Young has epilepsy and has said he is fortunate to never have had an attack while on stage and performing. The fact that he openly talks about his epilepsy has given others with that disease room to be more open about their own epilepsy. That's a gift that comes from living your life in public.

What a wonderful honor to us to hear a gifted Neil Young talk with articulate reserve about the genius in a Bob Dylan song. “it passes thru you. You do not own it.” Bruce Piasecki says-“thanks for the sweet comment neil! And your beat goes on”

Bob is Bob, Neil is Neil. They are both great in their own craft. No comparison is needed. Thanks to both of them for expressing the human condition so well! Oh and Leonard Cohen too, without a doubt!

Notice Neil doesn't give the standard "I wouldn't compare myself to ____" response. He says instead that you can't claim credit for your creativity, you don't own it, which to me is the honest answer of a true artist.

Their lyric poetry is different, their individual approach to guitar and even harmonica is different. Nothing really to compare except for them being fantastic artists.

One of the best moments in my life was when Me, my dad and my uncle went for a countryside-joy-ride on my uncle's ride. We started very early in the morning we went over hills & a mountain there were incredible views and we saw the sun set while listening to Niel & Bob songs. I never really heard neither but that moment really brought me into a different world, it made me forget all my problems. and everytime I hear HEART OF GOLD by neil It makes me relaxed and makes me remember that nice time.

It's different for everyone I suppose. Harvest was my introduction to Neil. As a 14 year old kid, he gave me emotional sustenance from the first notes of Out On The Weekend to last fade out of Words. In a world that felt flat and empty, full of meanness and unnecessary cruelty, his music moved me and made me feel real and understood. I love Bob Dylan's music. Probably listened to more Bob albums (so damn many) than Neil. So much power, but he never touches the emotional depth that Neil Young does. God bless them both! I'm grateful!

Stop comparing Bob Dylan to Neil Young. Its irrelevant, they are both great artists. Period.

Neil Young is one of those rare people who you don't always agree with, but you always know he is sincere and coming from a place of good faith.

They were both amazing writers. I'm still amazed at "Old Man" every time I play it or even just hear it.

I'm a Canadian folk musician and any time I cover a Neil Young song I get a few extra views. Thanks for the music and inspiration Neil!

There are a few greats...none better or worse than the other...Neil Young is one.

Dylan said it was magic and Neil says it comes into you and goes and Joni said it was the Muse...all three said it doesn't come from you; you can't strive for it on your own; and all you can do is be ready when if and when it does come...There is modesty there, and perhaps wisdom, as well.

Both are close to my heart I live ten miles from where neil grew up....dylan was one of if not the first artist I admired as a kid learning guitar Lol nobody seems to like my comment .. oh well its how i feel and its true

Neil and Bob are equally amazing!! There are so many artists out there that are very talented. So it's really hard to compare them to each other! I loved so many songs from the 1950's through the end of the 1990's! So many awesome, talented bands/singers. I couldn't begin to compare them or even name them all. After 2000, it seems the music took a turn for the worst! With the exception of a couple songs here and there. But the best music came from 1953 or so, through about 2000. My opinion, of course!

So when I hear him play, it pours me right into a happy mood slot and makes me feel life is so good, it's a real shot to listen to both Neil & Bob two giants !!

"Like a Rolling Stone" and Kerouac's "On the Road" inspired me to travel most of my life. Wandering hitchhiker as a young man, travelling salesman for many years. Looking for that beautiful view over the next hill.

Neil is always on the mark. When you are in the 'zone' great things happen. If you try to break it down afterward it evaporates.

Let's not forget Phil Ochs, a contemporary of Dylan's. At his 2013 Bridge Concert Dylan sang a song by Phil Ochs called ,Changes. He spoke about Phil Ochs and called him one the greatest poets and songwriters EVER. Phil is just so overlooked. It was good to hear Neil say that because I love and truly respect Neil and for him to recognize one of the most overlooked artists of our time just made my day.

So some dude was rocking to Bob Dylan in his vehicle and Neil Young was standing there listening with him. Sick.

Who I would put up there with Bob Dylan and Neil Young is Van Morrison. He has written and performed such great music for many, many years. If you've never heard "When the leaves come falling down", "Sweet Thing", "A Sense of Wonder", Contemplation Rose" and many more then you are missing out on fantastic music.

As an amateur musician, i know what is talking about. I dont know where songs come from, but they come to me in strangest times and in a row. I was walking in the park yesterday, when i suddenly got this melody in my head that sounded perfect to me. Then, i went home and recorded it. It was very quick. It was like being possessed and making art of any kind is trying to communicate with God (you can call it whatever you want). I believe in that powerful energy and it is kind of magical. I believe the greatest works of art have some kind of spiritual or metaphysical appeal to it.

I love Neil Young and Bob Dylan, both are great musicians.

Back in the early 90's I got to go back stage and meet Carlos, a fantastic guy, friendly, interested and talkative. I glanced over his shoulder and there about ten feet away was Bob and Neil walking together talking. It was like a movie and I was just a spectator.

Dylan's early work was incredible. His concert perfomances vary from amazing to very lackluster. That said; we owe Bob the homage of being among the finest of his generation and he know doubt influenced countless other renowned musicians. I would give anything to see Neil Young do a solo acoustic tour with Jackson Browne in a four hour concert setting!!!😃

Good point. I like how Neil avoided a direct answer. You're expecting him to mention Joni Mitchell, but then if he names her and NOT Paul Simon, Ray Daviess, Pete Townshend, etc. then he potentially gets in trouble for not doing so. As a side note, Charlie Rose is not very good at interviewing musicians....that's my experience.

for some reason when neil asks "Who else would I put up there?" hes seems like such a regular guy that i come in contact so often and it makes me feel like im there interviewing him and thinking "Wow i cant believe Neil Young is asking me something!!!!!"

Neil is the Canadian branch of my mother's family! (Although they don't know it)Just like Neil they all played numerous instruments. When my mother saw Neil's photos in his 60's she gasped and said oh my god it's my brother! She is in her 90's now and plays accordion, piano and autoharp while still writing songs at her age. She never learned how to write music but it just came natural.I saw the same likeness and I'm happy for Neil and I like his girl friend,LOL! I always liked his lyrics and music since the early 60's.Maybe it's the north country that makes Neil and Bobby see things similarly. I will miss both of them and myself soon I guess..LOL........What a long beautiful strange trip it's been.........

I had the immense privilege to meet Neil and his wonderful partner Darryl Hannah when they came to see our show in Irvine . A cherished memory for which i am thankful for.

the absolute lack of understanding of what neil is saying by the interviewer is intriguing. unlike most "stoners or rockers" ( the label ill use) neil isnt speaking in tounges or absolute nonsense, rather with a sense of unknowing profundity. for bob no longer knows the man who wrote those songs. so much can be pulled out , espcially from the ethos of that particular statement.

On the other hand, Neil's songs are ageless, maybe because his lyrics are written in such a personal way. I still found many of songs deeply connected to me. "Thrashers" is currently my favorite.

Can't leave out Paul Simon when talking about prolific songwriters.

I'm always struck by how almost every artist/pop-star has ready answers to all of those "who?" questions; they don't even have to think - the names come flying out. It's rare to hear one say, in essence, "I don't know", as Neil does here ("I'm absent"). Similarly, I heard Leonard Cohen say once in an interview, "I try not to have opinions".

This is a fascinating analysis a great musician from another great musician.
