Reaction to Neil Young aong Southern man.A song that deals with racism. He recorded this in 1970 and could have had a negative effect on his career in the southern part of the country. He laid it all on the line and for this incredible gesture,Young has my utmost respect.

Agree , he was just 21 when wrote this song , the entire album is a jewel . He made so much money with the album and the song that he bought his ranch with the money . Neil is a very talented musician, singer & songwriter. He was with the groups Buffalo Springfield & Crosby, Stills & Nash in the later 60's. Also had his own group with Crazy Horse for a few years. Neil went solo & has had so many great songs over the years. And he is not afraid to tackle sensitive issues in his songs.

Neil Young does what Neil Young does. He doesn’t stay rooted in any particular style. You earlier reacted to Harvest Moon and expected more or less the same a la Old Man, Heart Of Gold. And he comes out charging with a screamer Southern Man with a damming message on social inequality. Young is considered the progenitor of what was to be called grunge later in the 90s.

I remember "Needle and The Damage Done" very well. Unfortunately, my 32-year-old nephew who was an Attorney, at some point in Law School got addicted to heroin. His older brother found blood on his sleeve. After getting clean for years, he died 12/28/20. He was "dropped off" at the Emergency Room on Christmas Eve afternoon, and was found unconscious in the passenger seat of his vehicle, and his phone and wallet were gone. He never regained consciousness, but was an organ donor. We kept him on a ventilator and he saved 3 peoples' lives, both of his kidneys and his heart. This past Christmas was difficult, but we know he's in a better place. Thanks, Gin🙏

One thing about the call and response between Neil and Lynard Skynyrd is that there was no animosity between them - they respected each other. Harri, one thing you should know about Neil is that he has never cared about his career or reputation. He has always and ever danced to his own tune regardless of genre, message or reception. May he continue to rock on.

17 year old guitar player Nils Lofgren hitched his way to California to be with Neil after meeting him backstage after one of Neil's shows. He showed Neil he could play guitar and got an invitation from him to come out to his place. When he arrived, Neil had him play on the album, not as a guitar player but as a piano player, which he had never played, Neil had to teach him! It was also at Nil's suggestion that Neil speed up the instrumental section to a polka beat.

Neil Young is a Canadian legend, who is still doing his thing to this very day. This song, and "Alabama" off his next album led Lynyrd Skynyrd to write Sweet Home Alabama in response. This song was filled with anger and disgust, Alabama takes a more sympathetic tone. You should definitely pull up the lyrics when reacting, they don't always matter a lot in a song, but when they do it's nice to have them for following along and to refer back to. The lyrics are paramount in this song, forcing Neil's guitar hysterics to take a back seat. This isn't always the case, as his guitar-playing is one of his signatures. Check out Down By The River or Like a Hurricane for more of that. Neil Young has a ton of content worth checking out (and a lot that isn't worth it tbh), but deserves a deep dive. He recorded some of the most beautiful and the most ugly music I've heard, and both are amazing.

After the Goldrush is a great album, one of my favourite's. Most of the tracks are quite laid back, but this one is edgy and raw. Given the subject matter it's not surprising. Neil Young is Canadian so being a step away from us politics, he felt able to pass comment on the racial unrest of the 60s.. Great album, great artist, song which doesn't get enough exposure. Thanks for choosing it Harri. More Neil Young? - bring it on!

I’m so glad you’re doing more Neil!! He’s always been an iconoclast. I’ve followed Neil since 1969 and have seen him too many times to count. One thing is certain, since he began playing music to this day he says he just follows wherever the music takes him. That comes first. By the time this song came out in 1970 Neil was already very famous and could write whatever he pleased but he would have done what he wanted anyway. That’s just one reason why he’s so highly regarded.❤️

A great Neil story: After the attack of Nov 11, Lennon's song "Imagine" was one that was blacklisted from radio -- apparently not nationalistic enough. So on the live memorial musical program about a week after the event, Neil Young sang "Imagine" on TV before millions. Right back at The Man.

Neil is the greatest songwriter of all time, thanks for reacting. You should listen to Ohio

For Ohio, I highly recommend a double shot. Ohio is about the Kent State Massacre by the US National Guard. One of Kent State's a capella groups did this song in 2020, with Neil Young's blessing, for the 50th anniversary commemoration of the event. That version is also uploaded to KZfaq.

NEIL YOUNG wrote " COWGIRL IN THE SAND, CINNAMON GIRL,& DOWN BY THE RIVER" all on the same day lying in bed with the flu, they are all great tunes& show case some of his guitar playing. It's a very deep rabbit hole& you in for a great experience," LONG MAY YOU RUN" give the song OHIO a listen.🇨🇦🇺🇲

Neil is a Canadian, like these others that wrote music on USA issue, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Joni Mitchell are all from CANADA. As is The Guess Who, using a song as a voice.

Back in the day I listened to Neil Young albums over & over. Still love him. 💗💗 I always rolled my eyes at the criticism of this amazing song. Well sometimes truth hurts. Neil just tells it like is & always has.

Lynerd Skynerd answered back with the song Sweet Home Alabama, challenging Neil Young not to come south. Loved Neil Young then and now. He did what he wanted damn the consequences.

Check on the timing of the song OHIO and the change in the Vietnam War direction. I still believe Neil changed the minds of US politicians and was that catalyst for change!!! The power of a song....

Ronnie van zant and Neil Young were friends in the end .If you check out Lynyrd Skynyrds last 2/3 years concerts you can see Ronnie wearing Neil Youngs To nights the night tee shirt (l m lucky to have one of origionals) I,ve been reliable informed they were good friends despite their musical lyric differences.😅😅😅

Neil is great! Great reaction, man! Please react to Down By the River, Needle and The Damage Done, and Helpless by Neil Young. I’ve always admired his music but only recently took in the lyrics. Helpless is one of those songs that no matter how stressful my day is, that song floods my soul with such peace.

Great reaction, Harri, to an awesome song by our legendary Canadian Treasure! Others have suggested many of his other great hits for you to check out, but I do not yet see "Ohio", a song he wrote and recorded along with Crosby Stills and Nash (CSNY). Best to you in '22!!

Hello Harri. Happy New Year. Hope you’re having a great one. Check out “Needle and the damage done” That song is gut wrenching. Very gut wrenching but right on with the message.

As a Southern man, I'm also proud of him. Things were different, but not so much. I love the Southern things, and I hate the ideals.

Neil Young certainly was never afraid to make a statement and he always did so with great artistic eloquence. I think this album was done with his Crazy Horse band and they sound great. Excellent choice Harri. 🌺✌️

This is from 'After the Gold Rush' which was not officially Crazy Horse, though Danny Whitten, Ralph Molina, and Billy Talbott do play on the record so it kind of is Crazy Horse but there are a number of other musicians on this, as well. Notably, Nils Lofgren came up with the piano riff on 'Southern Man'.

Welcome to a big club of Neil Young fans. I like the comparisons to the Beatles, Bob Dylan as well for poetry in songs and lyrics that also includes Robbie Robertson of The Band.

For me, Neil is up with the Beatles and Dylan as songwriters. If you love this song, you willl love Cowgirl in the Sand and Down by the River. I wish I was just getting into Neil Young now, soi could hear it all again.
