Personally would take the food away . Put it back down, repeat until the kitty understands not to act that way to the person feeding them. One of them "I gave it to you I'll take it away" cases.

We had a couple kittens at different times when I was growing up! Oddly enough, usually the one that would start out hissing and growling at me, would end up being the one that would never leave my side.

Me and mine rough house a lot and when she gets too wound up she'll hiss at me. Ears are still up and no growling or striking, just her way of saying I need to tone it down. 15 seconds later she's ready to play again, very smart and sassy🙂

Uh wrong. A hiss is definitely anger. I would know, I have a cat who hisses a lot.

Actually, a lot of them were just pretending, practicing methods of deterrence and/or dominance. In some of the instances, that's evident from the fact that the kitten right next to them remains completely calm. In the few cases where they were legitimately afraid, that was most likely due to undersocialization. They lacked the repeat experience of being handled, and were unaware that it's a small inconvenience, at worst, and rewarding, at best. There's only one way of curing this, and that's handling them, frequently, until they stop being afraid. There's nothing cruel about it.

@@erikjrn4080 none of them was pretending. They are way to young, that was pure instinct for defense. The kittens or cats next to them have nothing to do with the instinct kicking in that they are in danger.

Moreover, playing is nothing other than deliberate triggering of their other instincts, but minus the strong emotions connected to it in adults. The notion of a kitten being old enough to see your hand, and still too young to play ranks pretty high on the list of "dumbest things I've ever heard". During their third week, they start interactive play with their litter mates. That's only days after their sight has developed well enough to recognize the general shape of their mother, and while their main sense for navigation is still smell. It's also the time when they begin to play with human hands. Of course the response of the kitten next to it matters. If it's not the least bit scary to the other kitten, that means two things. 1) Even if one of the kittens should be a bit more excitable than the other, it's clearly limited how scary it can be. 2) The calmness of the calm kitten will reassure the other kitten, while the agitation of the scared kitten will agitate the calm kitten. This is a very strong effect. When complete and utter calmness wins out in one of the kittens, it's very unlikely that the other is scared, and far more likely that it's just playful. Seriously, this is pretty much "kitten 101". If it's unknown to you, you should read up a bit and collect some experience, before commenting anything more advanced than "aw, cute" on kitten videos.
