My very first time paddling the Nelo 510 surf ski. I've been waiting for a plastic rival to the Epic V7 for years and I think I've finally found it. Nelo clearly understood the market for plastic skis and they were clearly going after the V7.
I have no financial interest in the company and paid my own money for this boat so this is a purely independent review.
I hope this helps you make an informed decision about this boat. I seem to have the second or third one on the East Coast of the U.S.
The boat came from Portugal (France?) and took 7 weeks to get across the ocean once I ordered it, but I'm happy to finally have it.
I'll get together with Paddling Buddy Dave with his V7 and we'll paddle each and then switch boats to make our final assessment as to which boat is faster, so stay tuned.

How high is the hump (just in front of the seat) and dose it leave enough knee room to straighten your leg on a cycling motion.

Rob, so I paid attention last night as I was out paddling and the hump is quite low. In fact, that is probably why I never gave it much notice. I have a 34" inseam and my legs go near straight whilst pumping, so the hump does not interfere with my usual leg movements whatsoever.

I have the Octane . What was it that you didn’t like about the Octane hull shape then?

The flat sections of the hull and the rocker just made it much slower than I expected. It is a much slower boat than the V7 and the Nelo 510, but it all depends on who you are and what you are looking for. The Octane is such a stable ski I think anyone could potentially paddle it. Just understand I bought it to be competitive on a 120-mile ultra-marathon race so I am definitely not a typical paddler. I was hoping the Octane would match the V7 in speed but it does not. For comfort and ease, however, I give it high marks.

The Octane has sharp edges which is good for the Ocean, I use it in surf too. The rocker is good for ocean play. I would only paddle up to about 15/20kms. I concede though that the pedal system on the Nelo looks a lot better. That is a weak point on the Octane. Why not get an actual V7 as you keep comparing boats to it? Or even fiberglass?

I don't want to get a V7 because it has been overdone and I'm looking for something new and relatively unknown. I'm silly like that. I like to be the kid with the new toy.

If you are padling say 40 kilometers, what speed can you maintaine in calm waters, is it a big diference compared to a sea kayak?

That all depends on the sea kayak and its construction and design. I haven't paddled the boat that distance on calm waters, but I know I would prefer this boat over any plastic sea kayak I've ever paddled in terms of speed. What is your height and weight? Would like to compare with me :D Also, a suggestion to review is the Nordic Kayaks Breeze PE. I hear good things about it!

I'm about 6' 1" and ~180 lbs. Never heard of Nordic Kayaks or the Breeze PE but if they want to work out a way for me to review one I'd be happy to.

Is the seat the same width as the v7? About 16.5 inches.

I don't even want to answer the question because it is so dependent upon the skill of the paddler. Boats aren't fast, paddlers are.

Nelo 510 Polyethylene Surfski: 22-23kg (48.5 -50lbs); Epic V7 stated weight of 22.7kg (50lb) from the manufacturer's specs.

That's because it varies by location and over time. When I bought mine it had a List Price that exactly matched that of the Epic V7.

Any idea about how would a 1,93m 110 kg first timer would deal with it? ;-)

The manufacturer suggests a maximum paddler weight of 125kg so I think you'll be OK there. I'm just a little shorter than you and still have room to move to foot rest further away so you should be fine there, too. If you are truly a first timer with no previous experience I'm guessing the boat will feel quite tippy to you, but if you stick with it you'll be able to master it quickly. I'd suggest you find one to test paddle first if in doubt.
