In US news and current events today, we remember Nelson Mandela on the 30th anniversary of his release from prison, on February 11, 1990.
Mandela opened up with: "Amandla! Amandla! i-Afrika, mayibuye! [Power! Power! Africa it is ours!] My friends, comrades and fellow South Africans, I greet you all in the name of peace, democracy and freedom for all. I stand here before you not as a prophet but as a humble servant of you, the people..." and went on to say, "On this day of my release, I extend my sincere and warmest gratitude to the millions of my compatriots and those in every corner of the globe who have campaigned tirelessly for my release."
Here are some more excerpts from his speech:
"The need to unite the people of our country is as important a task now as it always has been. No individual leader is able to take all these enormous tasks on his own. It is our task as leaders to place our views before our organization and to allow the democratic structures to decide on the way forward."
"Negotiations on the dismantling of apartheid will have to address the overwhelming demand of our people for a democratic nonracial and unitary South Africa. There must be an end to white monopoly on political power."
"We call on our white compatriots to join us in the shaping of a new South Africa. The freedom movement is the political home for you, too. We call on the international community to continue the campaign to isolate the apartheid regime."
"I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the idea of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities."

This man lost 27 years of his life in prison. But he never stopped fighting for his country and standing with his people against oppression. A true hero, a larger than life persona. He's the kind of leader that would enter a room and everyone would immediately recognize his presence. Few in this world could ever command such respect.

Church street bombing, 20 May 1983 - Pictures of an ANC massacre Friday, 06 December 2013 07:07 Like4.9K Share 7 Tweet The Church Street bombing was a car bomb attack on 20 May 1983 by Umkhonto we Sizwe, the military wing of the African National Congress (ANC), in Pretoria. The bomb exploded on Church Street at 4:30pm on a Friday. The bombing killed 19 people and wounded 217. The Church Street bombing attack was commanded by Aboobaker Ismail, authorized under the leadership of Oliver Tambo and Joe Slovo, with the knowledge and approval of Nelson Mandela. The Church Street bombing murdered both black and white people, and far more civilians than police or military.

"Long Walk to Freedom" changed my life. For 27 years he endured prison, terrible. But the really inspirational part is that he could have gone home if only he gave up the cause of freedom. Proof of his commitment and true courage

He fought especially hard for students education, even though he didn't have to go through it. Since he was brought to an English school, but the fact that he still fights for it is what makes him a good leader.

Absolutely. I studied at Nelson Mandela academic hospital and it was in fact the place where I witnessed the most racism. I have recordings and video footage of the multiple racial prejudices I experienced whilst there

I can't believe that Nelson Mandela was in jail before I was even born. I was born in 1964 and was amazed that they let such a great, gentle man out of jail but I think the guilt some people felt eventually got to everyone (and so it should!!!) He will always be known as a great man throughout all of history. I feel so humble to have lived in his time. Thank you.

Nelson Mandela's (Madiba) will always be loved❤ and remembered ♥️ They locked him up and sent him to prison as a young man, when he was released from prison 😢 he was an old man. All he wanted was freedom for his people and to be treated fairly. 😢😮 What a sad government 😔
