In a 1990 interview, Nelson Mandela answers a multitude of questions from various reporters on the economic and social futures of a new South Africa in the wake of the negotiations between the African National Congress (ANC) and the South African government in order to dismantle apartheid. Mandela answers questions on extremist groups, black on black political violence, Western expectations of political alliance, gender equality and representation, and international sanctions against apartheid. He also discusses his views on the Israeli/Palestinian conflict and the potential end of the Cold War and their effects on Western investment in Africa.

Wow! I don't think I've seen this interview since it was broadcast on PBS at the time. Interesting what 30 years of hindsight gives me. This is soon after he appeared in Oakland, CA - where I had to miss him because of my new job - and year before he went to Cuba to express thanks to the Cuban people for helping in the liberation struggle. Mandela changed his "no timetable" script as soon as SACP general secretary Chris Hani was assassinated, because masses of people weren't going to keep watching the slow, unproductive deliberations any further. Mandela knew it, but so did de Klerk. And again more hindsight, because Hani's assassination seemed like a tragic outlier until the campaign to destroy Winnie Mandela succeeded, so then with the two successors to lead out of the way, the new direction of the post-apartheid government was clear, and the last 30 years has sadly borne this out. In fact, talk at the time was that Mandela was too old, had had tuberculosis in prison, so Chris Hani was to be the first post-apartheid president, followed by Winnie Mandela. These were the undisputed, respected leaders of the struggle.

You do not understand,this was a man who spend 27 years in isolation,he obvisiouly spoke a different language.but if u listen carefully,u can find his truth and whats in the mans mind....but u just can listen to him in the same way you would listen to an ordinary person who has not been through what his been through,and hence u see the subtle and careful approach taken by the journalist who interviewed him at the time.
