Welcome to Japan and the Japanese Rock and Metal scene! I would like to say that it's the females who rule there and those who develop the new sounds. Nemophila is only one of many great Japanese bands, but they are probably one of those who will become as famous as classic Show-Ya, Loudness and Shonen Knife. Other Japanese bands waiting to become super famous worldwide are BAND-MAID and Lovebites. These two are definitely worth checking out.

These ladies are just one of the powerhouse bands out of Japan. The three big ones are Babymetal, Lovebites, and Band-Maid. As much as I love them, I would stay away from Babymetal reactions as their company, Amuse, is terrible for blocking videos. Out of the three, Lovebites is probably my favorite. Think old-school thrash with a modern twist from 5 uber-talented women. I would start with the song Set the World on Fire.

Little bio. Nemophila came together (Aug 2019) thanks to singer Mayu, through various people she put together a band for 1gig called Mayu sessions They vibed so well they played few more gigs before becoming Nemophila (5 petal Japanese flower) Unfortunately 6mths later there was COVID!! So Mayu came up with the brilliant idea along with there original material to record cover songs from popular Japanese & Western (Pop -> Metal) bands In no time they built a following on YT from originals, covers & live streams. Labeled a super group with arguably some of best female musicians in Japan Mayu has ridiculous vocal range, a Japanese Tatiana (Jinjer) with her ability to switch between screams (high) & cleans in a snap, can sing every music style, like Tatiana she writes most lyrics. She left former band Lipstick when they didnt want include more extreme music style. She's always changing hair styles Tamu (drummer) a highly respected sessions drummer, can play multiple instruments & very capable singer like all Nemo members. Shes also mom of 2 Saki (lead guitarist right side) known from former band Mary's Blood (wrote most songs) She's been very active in Japanese music scene since 2009 Hazuki (lead guitarist left side) She's also in band Lisa X

The most interesting and fun music I have discovered in the last year has mostly come from Asian women: Nemophila, Lovebites, BABYMETAL and Band-Maid from Japan and Voice of Baceprot from indonesia. It has also been some of the heaviest music I have heard in ages. These people make me happy. For me, the most enjoyable guitarists at the moment are mostly all Japanese guys and women. They have a distinctive style that is both retro and contemporary at the same time. Echoes of 80s shred but with more modern elements too, all done with technical chops that I haven't come close to in 50 years of guitar playing. Thanks for a great reaction to one of my favourite bands.

Mayu is also one of the better screamers in metal. She teased it just a little bit here, but if you want to hear her go all in with the scream, check out "Dissention," "Revive," and "Oiran." She has a little different style scream than, say, Tatiana from Jinjer or Alyssa or Angela from Arch Enemy, as she has more a high-pitched black metal style scream, but she's becoming quite epic at it. Also, Nemophila is just the tip of the iceberg for female Japanese hard rock and metal bands. Many people (at least outside of Japan) consider the trifecta of elite female Japanese bands to be LOVEBITES, Nemophila, and Band-Maid. I'd also throw Babymetal in there, as Japan's biggest metal export in many years, but they are a different concept (Babymetal is officially just the three singers/dancers, while the musicians are a hired backing band with occasionally rotating members). LOVEBITES is power and thrash metal, with some prog and symphonic/neo-classical metal as well. Lyrics are entirely in English (except for one song in Japanese from the first EP, which was also later rerecorded in English). Singer was originally an R&B singer. And they have one of the best, if not possibly THE best dual-guitar tandems in modern metal in Midori and Miyako. Every member is also a multinstrumentalist, with Miyako also being a world-class classical pianist. They've played several major metal festivals in Europe, including Wacken, Grasspop, and Bloodstock, but have not yet played in the US (except for a couple appearances by the guitarists at NAMM). With a new bassist coming on board this month, hopefully we'll see them in 2023. Nemophila - not much to say, you just reacted to them, lol! Also one of the best dual-guitar tandems in Saki and Hazuki. They first became known through their covers of classic rock and metal songs. Their early original material was mostly in Japanese, but more recent songs have begun incorporating more and more English, with "Dissention," "Revive" and "Style" being mostly in English. They played at the Whiskey a Go-Go in LA a few weeks ago, and will be playing a festival in San Francisco in a few weeks, so hopefully we'll get a larger US tour next year after their second album drops. Band-Maid - more hard rock than metal, but they do cross the metal line occasionally. They dress in maid costumes, but don't let that fool you, they are every bit as talented as their peers in LOVEBITES and Nemophila. Their drummer and bassist are among the best in the business. Songs are mostly in Japanese, but they throw several English lines in there, too. At least one song "Don't Let Me Down" is almost entirely English. They're doing a US tour in October and November of this year (I'll be at the Chicago show)! Babymetal - a unique fusion of J-Pop and heavy metal. Officially, they are just lead singer/dancer Su and back-up singer/dancer Moa, and previously included backup singer/dancer Yui, who left in 2018). They perform choreographed dance in a J-pop style, but are backed by the kami band, a group of elite session musicians who play just about every genre of metal behind the ladies. The members of the kami band occasionally rotate, according to their availability, but the core kami band has remained relatively stable over the years, so they are usually unofficially viewed as part of Babymetal. In recent years, they picked up a second backing band called the Western Kami Band, comprised mostly of members of the Star Wars-themed metal band Galactic Empire, for some of their US and European dates. They are Japan's biggest-selling metal export to the West since X-Japan and Loudness in the 80s.

Sorrai is the cool fresh Autumn breeze in Japan, and these ladies are truly a breath of fresh air. They are brilliant musicians and I am yet to hear 1 single song of theirs that isn't fantastic. Nemophila are destined for greatness because they already are. Spread the word !!!

Welcome to Nemophila. This band is amazing. They get much Heavier than this too and Mayu can really belt out the screams. They are metal but also do a number of hard rock songs too. Try NEMOPHILA / OIRAN [Official Live Video] to hear them live. Dissension, Revive,Adabana also some good ones. All their songs kick ass and they also do some great covers too.

Best band going. By all means dive all the way in...they never put a foot wrong. I suggest Adabana, Revive, Oiran (live, in particular), Life, and Monsters. But seriously, you can't go wrong with this band. Saw them July 1st in LA at Whisky a Go Go...legendary venue, and they _added_ to the legend.

Nemophila has a playlist with 34 cover songs that were recorded studio live during the lockdown. Lot of them in English. All great. You can also try out other Japanese bands. Nemophila does covers of Maximum the Hormone and Babymetal for example. It's funny when Nemophila does a Babymetal cover because they are paying homage to an older band but at the same time the women of Nemophila are older than the members of Babymetal.
