@@KristinKali actually the song is about the last phase of the cold war and dooming apocalypse. The song was written when NATO stationed US-Pershing II atomic rockets in West-Germany and West-Germans were afraid of a nuclear WW3. The text describes a fictional scenario where after 99 years of (cold/) war (ever since WW1) 99 red ballons are mistaken for enemy aircraft and the USSR and NATO nuke the shit out of each other and everybody dies (the German version is a bit more explicit, the English version implies it due to translation issues). So yeah ... leave it to the Germans to make the world happily dance full of joy to a song about annihilation of mankind. 😂

The gist of the original song was that some kids had released balloons near a border of a Cold War country (presumably from West Germany into East at the time), and a faulty sensor system read them as incoming aircraft/missiles, scrambling said country into attack. When she says she's "standing pretty", she's the only one standing after the world had effectively ended. See Rush's Distant Early Warning for similar content.

Nena was part of the so called "Neue Deutsche Welle" (New German Wave) in the very early 80s, when german pop & rock bands began to sing in german instead of english. Musically it is hard to make a definition of this scene. Some bands used to make modern synthie pop, but you could also find bands with some punk attitude. One band called "Spider Murphy Gang" even made good old fashioned Rock'n'Roll in the style of the 50s and sang in bavarian dialect. Nena was more on the "rock-side" of this scene, at least in the early days. As one of those few bands who were successful even outside of Germany, they were later trapped in a big sell out, which caused their split up in 1987.

The Bangles singer was Susanna Hoffs...very beautiful woman. ..... There is a new performance of 99 Red Balloons done on live stage (I wanna say around 2010-ish) with singer Nena in her fifties. She does not look like she has aged a day since this original video...still a pleasure to watch fluidly move about the stage with the flexible limberness of a teenager! Another beautiful woman!

That's why military radars have filters on them so that bug swarms, flocks of birds, toy balloons, dust storms and toy drones don't show up on military radars even though they normally would.

"I don't know what weapons World War III will be fought with, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones." Albert Einstein. 99 Luftballons was created against the background of the last phase of the Cold War in Germany in the 1980s.[1] The stationing of nuclear Pershing II missiles in Germany began in 1983 as a result of the NATO double-track decision of 1979. This nuclear armament led to fears that the danger of nuclear war was increasing and was therefore met with massive resistance from parts of the population. These formed in the peace movement of the 1980s. The idea for the lyrics came to band guitarist Carlo Karges in 1982 at a Rolling Stones concert in West Berlin, when he watched a large number of colorful balloons being released into the sky. Karges wondered what would happen if the balloons drifted across the border into East Berlin and triggered a paranoid reaction there.

It's important to understand the context of this song. In the 1980s, tensions between the Soviet Union and the West were at their highest point since the 1950s. Nuclear war seemed just around the corner and of course Germany, being the dividing line between East and West would have been on the front lines. Don't forget, Germany was still recovering from the utter devastation of the country during WWII, just 40-some years previous, and they definitely were not eager for an even more dangerous conflict. With everything on a hair trigger it wasn't hard to imagined something as simple as launching some toy balloons could spark an all out nuclear holocaust.

Thank-you for explaining this 😳🙏 It’s definitely something that the possibility of nuclear war could be interpreted into such a lighthearted song.. I picked this song bc it’s a haunting quality but definitely 80’s. Thanks to you now I know some history behind it

Nena is not Her Real Name, its a Spanish Term of endearment meaning little girl / chick. Her Family picked that up in a Spain Holiday and ever called her that. the german original has some diferences. Its not specifiat what color the Ballons are (but hey theres is definetly no deeper reason for them to be RED in the merican version...) or where/who launched them, because that would and has not mattered (yes there where inccidenced and accidenced) and in the first lines the little girls ask you/the world/the Leaders/the fingers on buttons "do you, maybe, have time for me? Then i would sing a song to you! Do you think about me (yes directly translated its Maybe you're thinking of me right now) right now? THEN i would like to sing a song to you" and yes if you are imagining a 4 year old, dragging her teddy behind her, saying "Daddy? Mommy? im scared!" then your ready to listen to her
