Hundreds of protesters gathered in Nepal's capital Kathmandu calling for a restoration of the Hindu Kingdom. Riot cops used water cannons and bamboo batons to drive back the horde of protesters. For most of its recent history, Nepal has been a Hindu state ruled by a King. But in 2006, the last King Gyanendra abdicated after weeks of street protests. The newly drafted constitution established a secular republic in the country. Though Nepal's mainstream political parties have rejected this demand, years of political instability has triggered a campaign for the King's return. Will these protesters succeed? How should India see this campaign? Palki Sharma tells you.

Recently Buddhist monk was thrashed by Hindu administration, Native of Nepal are demanding right to practice their religion, culture and preservation of language. Few months ago Hindu people and their religion leader brandish swords and paraded even Indian citizens in Nepal to threatened the beef eaters. If the Nepalese Republic was so good, why does it have to flip-flop between 13 governments in the last 18 years and still consider it "better" than a monarch? Nepal was only forced to become a republic after the previous royal family was murdered, not overthrown! At least if they had a king, there would be some stability to pressure the elected government to get their act together while rallying the Nepalese people to unite against the government's inactions. It's better to have an obnoxious king than an obnoxious parliament that was "chosen" by many but cannot deliver its duties to the people.

India shares a huge responsibility for what has become of Nepal today. They sheltered, financed and trained Nepal's Maoists communist who killed 17000 innocent people in their 10-year war against the state and abolished Nepalese monarchy and declared it secular. Since then, evangelic Christians have showed up everywhere in Nepal converting poor and innocent villagers. As long as Indians see China as a boggy-man, things will never get better for Asians to whom this century belongs. Indians need to learn that before the arrival of British in the sub-continent, there never was any hostility between them and the Chinese.
