I feel like MSI and ASUS are playing a different game than Valve. They seem to be trying to brute force their handhelds, while Valve goes for a more nuanced and finesse approach. Either way you shake it, if they play games better, and for longer, its going to be very interesting to see what happens with the handheld pc space.

As a Linux user, I'm completely biased in favor of the Steam Deck, but with that disclaimer out of the way, I'll say the big difference is that Valve is a software company. To be fair to all these competitors, they're hardware companies. They know how to make hardware quickly and effectively, ship it out to customers and let the customers worry about fiddling with Windows, overclocking, etc. The idea of creating a handheld gaming device that works well and has the longevity and stability of a console is just not in their wheelhouse.

Do you think Xbox handheld (even if it’s actually a real thing) can be a good device? Not only will it run the console level OS. It will also come from a company that has been making consoles. (At this point Microsoft should just come out with an Xbox OS or windows OS for 3rd party devices)

As windows user, I don't feel need to be worried about fiddling with Windows on my Ally. Most time i feel excatly the same as my steam deck. Both of them can have minor issues when playing some games or running mods, etc. I can't remember the last time I got an error on my Ally or steam deck and I almost play them daily. I don't think steam os can repalce windows at the moment. however, if sony releas a new PSP that plays native PS games, i will drop both of them and buy that device day one.

It's always been the issue with pc handhelds. Are most of them cool? Yes but they're not worth it, usually clunky with a poor battery life. That's where the steam deck wins. Just to add to this: Larian Studios, the company behind Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity 2, is also privately owned. Larian also gave an update for all copies of Divinity 2 adding "Gift Bags"...which were essentially Divinity 2's most popular mods on PC made official because modding was impossible on console. That's some next level dedication there. While it's rare to see companies privately owned these days, it does feel like a major factor into how good companies can remain good. Exactly. These aren't "competition" to Valve. They're an increase to Valve's sales. They knew what they were doing when they kicked off this handheld PC craze. They carved out a price niche that nothing else can compete with, and they will continue to stay in that niche even when a Deck 2 is released, because they don't need to be the most powerful. If someone wants more power, Valve has no problem with them buying a Windows PC from Ayaneo, Ayn, Asus, MSI, Lenovo, Zotac, because it'll still mean profits for Valve either way. More funding to put into better development of future Decks without needing to worry about failure.

@@PBJA89 Not really. The Steam Machines started coming out in 2015, and a handheld one was planned. Then valve saw the public response to too much hardware variety combined with SteamOS's inability to play Windows games, and pulled the plug on that handheld until they could come back with a better product. The Switch's release in the meantime was kind of a coincidence; Valve was working on their own handheld gaming PC since before Ninty released their Switch. Not to mention, the Switch isn't a PC. They kind of appeal to a different audience. Companies like GPD had already been releasing their own handheld PCs for years, but the Steam Deck was the first one with enough raw gaming power to attract the masses, kicking off the craze of *other* companies developing handheld PCs as well.

GPD has been the most successful competitor to the Steam Deck because: - They actually created this market with the GPD Win 1 in 2015. They were actually the market leader before Valve entered and will always have the First Mover Advantage. - They offer a form factor that neither Valve nor other handheld gaming PC manufacturers offer: Clamshell. - No matter the model and form factor, the GPD Win lineup has never abandoned a dedicated keyboard, which really helps with the experience of using Windows on a handheld. - A dedicated physical switch to change the joysticks between mouse mode and gamepad mode is still a GPD-exclusive feature to this day.

I think it's all but certain the X/S is the end of the line for the Xbox as we know it. I could see MS keeping the brand alive for a Steam-style PC ecosystem, and I could see them releasing a Steam Deck-style handheld to go along with it... but even if it's a great piece of hardware, why wouldn't I just install Steam on it instead? The big issue with Xbox is that the hardware is supposed to drive users towards their MS Store/GamePass ecosystem and it hasn't done that at anywhere near the scale they need to actually turn a profit. Abandoning the current console approach to directly take on Steam just seems like throwing good money after bad.

Games still require the same amount of tinkering as my windows desktop to get good performance (ie allow tearing, image settings, fps profiles, controller profiles, etc). Valve made all the right hardware choices. 1. Really good ergonomics (not chasing Switch's cramped design). 2. Balanced specs (CPU isn't overkill vs GPU, and there isn't more RAM than you would reasonably use). 3. Trackpads for much better mouse control options. 4. 4 grip button And the OLED version massively upgraded the display to be one of the better handheld ones, which was a weakness of the OG Deck.

I feel the same about all these handhelds as they are all have hardware limitations when it comes to laptops and desktops. I like the handheld on the go but why would I play a game like Ghost of Tsushima on a small screen with small speakers when I can play it on a 65" TV hooked up to a sound system? Great video! I think a lot of people have gotten one sided with their takes on these devices. For me, it’s always been: great performance + phenomenal software/hardware support from not only the company but the community as well vs Greater performance + mediocre software/hardware support. I think it’s so much more to it than just saying “XYZ has a bigger screen, faster chip, etc.” but how’s the software support and everything else outside of that?

i honestly love my Legion GO and where I play my handheld (mostly at work on long breaks) grabbing a charger isn’t a problem. Something that can fit in a small bag and be daily life portable and play all my PC games is a priority and the Legion Go has filled my niche. I think that for the average user, the thing is most deck competitors aren’t doing much that makes them a hyper better choice then the deck. There is a reason to get the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo games. The console wars were won on titles more than anything. I see my Legion GO more as a more portable alternate to getting a gaming laptop more than an alternative to the Deck.

As someone who owned nearly every single handheld starting from GPD 4000 Ryzen chips to One X Player X1 + Ally + Deck OLED + L GO..... I gotta say the ultimate one is Ally X even though I don't have it yet, but Ally was near perfection to me and only battery life + extra USB C I needed it from it and that's what it got.... For all guys complaining about windows use Emudeck in windows and you will get near Deck like experience in addition to all games supported... And to top all of this the Frame generation technology like Lossless app or AMD makes huge difference, yes they have issues but 3 times fps far more beneficial
@Andy-xn1lz
@Andy-xn1lz Ай бұрын
Your “ultimate” just reflects the latest upgrade device. Ally X makes improvement in all the key areas but should be compared to gen 2 LeGo and other devices for true benchmark. If I was buying a new device now and did not need the larger screen of the LeGo of Kun, then AllyX is the obvious choice unless you want to take advantage of the discounted Gen 1 Ally
@TRX25EX
@TRX25EX Ай бұрын
@@Andy-xn1lz But Ally X is not having next gen parts or something it's just that Ally had one huge weakness and that the space inside it was poorly utilised, now though I don't see any other company capable of making a Handheld at this battery size and weight. They will be in a league of their own for awhile, 60Kwh is what's expected but we got 80 which is highest ever known to a handheld They managed that because Asus know to build custom sized parts than source it from suppliers, Zotac for example is releasing after Ally X yet have much worse battery as leaked And what sets Ally apart of others is that it have the best software I used so far, updates as easy as Deck, no crashing or anything unexpected, customised properly giving enough controls to the user

How can the Claw be “essentially” an Ally clone when it has a completely different chipset? In fact the only thing it has in common with the Ally is the chassis and Windows. On top of that, the Steam deck is increasingly struggling to run newer games. The ROG X should get around 3.5 hours of battery life. Which means better performance and similar battery life as a Steam Deck.
