I love the way PJ ended The Hobbit with a mention of Strider and a scene of Bilbo with the Ring in his hand; the same seen at the beginning of the Fellowship of the Ring. I was grateful to PJ for creating the graceful links.

Great interview. I bought Ian's book because of it, and so far it's a fantastic read. I loved the observations you both made about the Hobbit films. I like to say that the Hobbit is the second best fantasy film series, and the only reason it seems disappointing is that the best is Lord of the Rings. I always watch the six films in chronological order. That way I get the starch before the main course.

Thanks for the upload ❣ If you know about Lang's METROPOLIS (1929/2010) that was cut to pieces in the US and the original story was mutilated and lost and then was found again 2008 in Brazil and restored - the story of Jack Snyder reminded me of that!. Studios should step back more....

I may be in the minority, but I disagree with what most people say about Peter Jackson's Hobbit films. In my view, the mistake wasn't making three movies, but the misconceived notion that each had to be more than 90 minutes (or two hours) long. Remove the padding, and you have two excellent initial installments and a third reasonably good one.

The only problem with a Hobbit movies is overuse of CGI, and that's because they didn't have time to do it practically. So non of that was his fault and his crew.

Peter Jackson ruined those movies and he's a horrible director, even Christopher Tolkien hated the movies and said "He took my father's story and made an action film for teenage boys".... I'll pose one question to everyone: Does anyone truly think Tolkien would be pleased if he saw scenes like Legolas surfing on a shield down some stairs at the battle of helms deep?

Just because they’re not completely accurate to the source material or the authors vision doesn’t mean we shouldn’t have to like them.

"Peter Jackson ruined those movies " - that claim falls apart when one realizes that PJ was the mover behind the movies. In other words, without him the trilogy of movies wouldn't be. "... and he's a horrible director," - the Academy thinks otherwise. " Christopher Tolkien hated the movies" - Christopher Tolkien never made a film and probably didn't know what goes into making one. There are fundamental differences between literature and film, and to expect a film to be an exact duplicate of a written story is to be disappointed. "Does anyone truly think Tolkien would be pleased if he saw scenes like Legolas surfing ..." - what, a single inserted action sequence is going to upset you? Nearly every human will be forgotten a hundred years after they're dead. At least Tolkien has been remembered enough for others to present some of his characters and stories in other forms, long after he is dead. PJ adding dynamics to what is otherwise a long (and would be dull on film) story was necessary to make the story, the essence of the story (which has nothing to do whether elves can surf on shields) come to life on screen.

The Frighteners is awesome. Also I think those teenage boys are men now. Wee girly men, but we’re men all the same. So... yeah, take that. @postleftieludite, lemme ask you, is there a Jackson scene that you think Tolkien would have liked? Which one.
