Today, we trace the origins and migrations of the Men of Middle-earth, including how the three Houses of the Edain were founded - the ancestors of the Númenóreans. Starting from the time men awake in the far East, to them become the Houses of Bëor, Haleth, and Hador.

I realize that Tolkien meant to play this story out like a cycle of tragic irony, but my question is why wouldn't it be considered a matter a heroic valor to defy Morgoth instead of playing it out as a kind of hubris?

@@keithtorgersen9664 I agree. It always bugs me when human protagonists confront evil-doing, or clearly murderous gods or godlike figures and it’s interpreted or ends up playing as hubris, pride, what have you. It’s calling out a murderer, who cares that they are gods?

Some researchers think it only took a few generations for humans in real life to traverse the whole world, from Africa to Australia and the Americas. It was our nature, we spent our lives walking and on the move, exploring and hunting, no farming yet, so we just kept walking where ever there was land. It's so amazing to me but when you really think about it it makes sense, humans just kept walking for generations so with all that time and movement we reached pretty much everywhere in (for us) a relativelty short period.

I finished the Silmarillion for the second time recently. Strongly considered just restarting it immediately. It’s become my favorite story, even more so than Lord of The Rings. LOTR is a realistic take on a fantasy adventure, still mostly concerned with men. Silmarillion tells of incredible events before history even began, right up until the end of the greatest Elven civilizations in Middle-Earth. The creation of the Silmarils, the tale of Beren and Luthien, The Battle of Unnumbered tears….it makes Sauron and the War of the Ring look like what it is: an echo, a shadow of greater battles and threats that have always existed and plagued the Peoples of middle Earth.

The Sindarin word Edain, singular Adan (Quenya Atani, Atan), meant 'second people', and originally referred to all mankind - later it applied specifically to the Men of Beleriand and their descendants. However, the Quenya name Atani remained as a term for all mankind.

Indeed, and just to clarify a bit, Hador was the the grandfather of Hurin and Huor, and the mother of the brothers was Hareth of the House of Haleth. And to connect everyone even further, the mothers of Turin and Tuor, Morwen and Rian, were cousins and members of the House of Beor, specifically their fathers were the first cousins of Beren.

The Sundering of the Elves is more well-known to us Tolkien scholars, but its great to see how men awoke and travelled throughout time. Its a lesser known piece of the lore that few knew until now. And its shown in an easy and visual way. I always wondered how men awoke and travelled to Beleriand and how the groups of men splitted from one another like the Elves did when they awoke and travelled to Valinor.

Fun/Not so fun fact: There is an unpublished silmarillion chapter called the Wanderings of Hurin, which tells of how the House of Haleth was mostly wiped out. Basically, Hurin came to Brethil after being released from Angband, where after some initial talks, the people treat him well. I don't remember specifics, but essentially Hurin gets two of the leaders of the House of Haleth to fight each other through recklessness, and they basically cause ruin to themselves.

The answer that Haleth gives to the elves when they ask her people to guard the forest of Brethil against the Orcs, really stuck to me. She basically says: "Where are my father and brother? If you think that I would become friends with the creatures who ATE my kin, you know nothing about our people." Truly a woman of steel. Screw RoP's Galadriel, I want to see a series or movie about her. And she doesn't even need to become an allmifghty fighting machine, her character alone is impressive. I think the fact that Orcs regularly eat human (and other) meat is not talked about enough. Contrary to the movies (where there are just a few quotes), in the books, this is mentioned constantly. Even in The Lord of the Rings. 😅 This gives awhole other dimension to the wickedness of Orcs, the fear of them, but also the misery to which Morgoth has condemned them.

Even before the term Edain came up i remember in the Book of lost tales ther was the Tale how the Elf Nuin awakened the first two children, Ermon and Elmir... Or the Story about the First temple Andreth told Finrod... I think he never reused or revisited them, they are not in the Silmarillion, but i enjoyed reading these apocryphic stories on the origin of man.

One thing i would actually suggest you to do is look into the people of Bor & Ulfang. Bor in particular whose people were as Tolkien described, of African descent, also came into beleriand in the first age and proved faithful to the elves. They were also almost wiped out during the battle of un-numbered tears. But i am pretty sure Bor had descendants (wife, kids, cousins, nephews...etc) who didn't go to the war, and who refused to go back east. No doubt these folk were also granted passage to Numenor due to the the faithfulness of their leader Bor. Although Tolkien didn't specifically mention this, however the breadcrumbs are there to be put together. So Numenor may have been made up of the three main houses, but also most likely a lesser number of folk from the house of Bor the faithful aswell. Something to reflect on.

The House of Hador gets a nice description in the Silmarillion: "His people were of great strength and stature, ready in mind, bold and steadfast, quick to anger and to laughter, mighty among the Children of Iluvatar in the youth of Mankind. Yellow-haired they were for the most part, and blue-eyed." And since they're the most populous of the houses, we can safely assume that most of the Numenoreans (and later Gondorians) were golden-haired, blue-eyed, good-humored giants. The people of Haleth, not so much. We get a throwaway line that they're kind of like the House of Beor in looks and mood (dark hair, gray eyes, serious) but smaller in stature and less eager for lore. They were also loners and not big fans of talking too much, while the people of Beor were a lot like mortal Noldor.

I had a doubt maybe someone in the comments could resolve. We know that Morgoth could never create Life, since that is the power of Eru Illuvatar. As such, he corrupted Elves into orcs, Ents into trolls and Maiar into Balrogs. But where did he get the inspiration for dragons or FireDrakes? And they aren't dumb creatures at all. We know that Glaurunh managed to conquer a city, the city of Nargothrond, and even scheme against Turin Turembar. Are we to believe that Fire Drakes are inspired by the Nameless Things? This is something that has bothered me for a bit. Any ideas?

I always wondered the meaning of awakening of the elfs and humans , was it a male and female thing like Adam and Eve or a bunch of people just rised from the ground

Refusing to submit to evil, that is the best of humans, to lead with love, compassion, acceptance of difference, courage, integrity, patience, kindness and generosity. May we all live by these values as best we can. We are humans, and flawed, we make mistakes. However, in our love, we can be glorious.

This was so helpful, thank you! The origins of the houses of the Edain seemed so murky and unintelligible to me before this.

Each time the story of Hurin and how morgoth trapped him like for long time in torture and dreadful things.. I wish that the Valar had taken a step to rescue him espicially for his faithful, strong, and heroic standing infront of Morgoth.. Unless the Valar cannot see what is going on in Morgoth's Fortresses due to one of his spells or powers, or can they ?

this is the issue with lord of the rings lore after Tolkien, his son collected the lore like an encyclopedia, like a recipe full of names, names more names. name of people, name of lands, name of empires....etc. the story uniting the picture together is less plentiful and is merely a list of actions on a timeline. Making lore very difficult to take in. In fantasy fiction, there is a very well established balance of story & introduction of new concepts (characters, races, worlds and kingdoms) to eyes of the reader allowing the reader to fall into the story while digesting all the new things they are introduced naturally. Middle earth lore literally hits you in the face with new things over and over before you got into the flow of the story.

They've done pretty well showing off the more mythic parts of the lore via flashbacks in ROP so I wouldn't be surprised if they showed off some more stuff in the same way in future seasons.

I've read these books so many times over the last 4 decades, but it's such a pleasure to watch your amazing videos of Tolkien's actual lore.
