My mother (would be over 100 if living) would bend a double-pointed needle to make her cable needle. She bend it into a fairly tight U-shape in such a way that one end was longer than the other. When it was time to knit the stitches that were on the cable needle, she would knit those stitches directly from the cable needle -- i.e. she did not transfer the stitches back to the left-hand needle. Women of that era had to be resourceful since they did not have access to the gadgets available today :) Thanks Mom for your patience in teaching me to knit.

Another factor in yarn choice is the number of plies. 3 or 4 ply yarns have a more rounded cross section compared to 2 ply yarns. Because of that, they make cables pop more. They hold their shape rather than flattening out. Great video, thanks!

Jo-Ann, I enjoyed your video. Here is the tip that I use :) Because there is an "F" in the word leFt.....F/front. Because there is an "R" in the word Right.........R/Rear. (same principle for M!L/M1R)

I found you on my KZfaq suggestions and boy did they get it right! You are an excellent teacher. I particularly appreciate the way you demonstrate in both left and right handed styles because I am right handed but I knit left handed and some pattern instructions are more difficult for me to figure out. I also often find my ideas for my work on Pinterest where it's often difficult to find the written pattern, so I have to figure it out by looking at the picture only, then write the pattern for myself. Thank you for your great suggestions of different ways to do this also.

Thank you so much for your very clear explanation and instructions! I purchased a kit to make my husband a fisherman’s sweater. It came from Ireland and it’s way more advanced in knitting skill than anything I’ve ever done before. I studied the pattern for a long time before I decided I needed to make a chart, which took hours! But I was still unclear about how to do the cable stitches. There are some mistakes in the pattern, and your video helped me to understand how to correct them! You’re a great teacher!

I have also used as cable needles: toothpick, bamboo skewer (BBQ removed and cleaned), ink cartridge refill for a pen, a pencil, a T-pin and a tapestry needle. 😂 I have tried to knit cables without a cable needle, but it wasn’t pretty. I prefer a cable needle that grabs the yarn so it can’t slip off.

Literally crying here. Been knitting for 8 years and decided to finally delve into cables. A hot mess is an understatement. When i try to knit my stitches off the cable needle they are too tight, they get twisted something awfulmand fall off the cable. I am using the plastic one with the little dip in the center. If I try to put the stitches back onto my needle they either twist up or fall off completely and start to unravel. I am cable-handicapped and cable cursed. 😢

Thank you! I ordered an almost straight wooden set from an artisan on Amazon. They are just ever so slightly wider at the ends and about 4 inches long. What a game changer!!!! I was able to make 4 earwarmers in 4 different cable patterns and now am ADDICTED to cabling. I love cabling now and found this video extremely useful. Saved to favorites playlist! ❤❤❤

And p.s. I am able to knit right off the cable needle without sliding them back onto my keft knitting needle! How clever! Love your be RIGHT BACK. I use that with M1R all the time! (I LEFT thru the FRONT door for M1R works for right leaner cables too) More ❤❤❤❤ 4 U

Hello! I've just found this great video and subscribed. I see in the background that you have an off-white colored blanket, that begins with about 8-10 rows of seed stitch, and when you get to the cabling, there is no "rippling" of the border. I just bought a lovely pattern to make a cable baby blanket, but the seed stitch border is all bunchy and ripply. Years ago (like 35) I made fisherman knit baby blankets for my children, and nieces and nephew, but I can't find the pattern. The seed stitch border didn't bunch up like this new pattern I just bought. Do you have a pattern for a baby blanket that I can buy? Without the rippling in the border?

I don't have any patterns for blankets. The blanket you see in the background is this pattern: www.lionbrand.com/products/knitting-pattern-treasured-heirloom-baby-blanket-1

@NerdyKnitting

Just knitting and purling. In many cable patterns, the wrong-side rows are 'rest' rows where you knit the knit stitches and purl the purl stitches.
