Longplay of game Castlevania II: Simon's Quest for NES! It is the sequence of the first Castlevania and despite Simon's Quest bring elements direct it, the game also introduces a different gameplay with exploration themes.
Simon wondered what all the chaos was over when he defeated Dracula seven years before in the first "Castlevania". What he did not know is that Dracula throw a curse in Simon before died, and gradually Simon lost your life. An apparition that appears in the cemetery of the Belmonts tells him that the only way to end the curse would be resurrecting Dracula and destroying it again. However, the subjects of Dracula divided his body into 5 parts and spread throughout Transylvania.
This version was the first themed exploration, was poorly received in some respects to be quite difficult (not because of the enemy, but by reference, since we do not have even a map to help guide the cities), other versions themed exploitative (like Symphony of the Night, the versions for GBA and Nintendo DS) would come years later to improve aspects of exploration and insert a map that helps a lot. It's a good game, a soundtrack epic (bloody tears rules) but a map would be needed to make this version better.
Done with the best ending (finish the game in less than 8 game days) -

It seems so visually simple today, but I will never forget how this game captured the essence of sublime horror and Dracula for me as a kid. The music, of course, was an essential ingredient; but the forests, castles, graveyards, skeletons, etc, were marvelous for their time, too. I always loved the idea of collecting Dracula's remains, too; so creepy! For me, the game was fairly easy compared to say Ninja Gaiden or the Zeldas; with the exception of the kneeling tornado, which I had to learn from NES magazine and which I always thought wasn't very fair. Such a pleasure to revisit this game so dear to my heart here on KZfaq.❤️💀

@@dbodooley I dunno, man, I kinda disagree. There is a clue that says "TO REPLENISH EARTH ,KNEEL BY THE LAKE WITH THE BLUE CRYSTAL." With the mis-translations it you can still work the game out with persistence and trial and error. As long as you draw a map of the areas and throw holy water against blocks to uncover Dracula's notes, then it all falls into place. Even the infamous cliff face wind one can be worked out if you think about it. By that point you've learned that if you kneel with a blue crystal at seemingly dead ends, something will happens to grant you access. The badly translated clue is "WAIT FOR A SOUL WITH A RED CRYSTAL ON DEBORAH CLIFF" which is meant to be "Hold a red crystal in front of Deborah cliff and wait for a wind." One of the snarky villagers says you can open a hole in the cliff by headbutting it. Because kneeling with a blue crystal opened the lake, at one point you'll try kneeling with the red crystal. I find the biggest problem with Simon's Quest is not knowing what the areas are. If they have text at the top of the screen telling you the area then it would be a lot easier to match up the clues with the locations

Awesome memories! Believe it or not, but as a kid playing this game on NES, I managed to beat the entire game without the use of strategy guides or anything of the sort. For getting past the cliff with the cryptic-as-hell hint, somehow though some strange intuition, I decided to kneel down at that dead-end just to see if anything would happen...then to my surprise, that tornado came out of the blue and swept me to the other side! Seeing this game today gives me great nostalgia!

I'm sure someone has mentioned it already but the easiest way to defeat was Dracula was to stand in the doorway and equip yourself with the diamond. As you'd constantly attack with the flame whip, the diamond would bounce off of the concrete blocks and you'd be out of the harms way. This was the greatest Castlevania ever, especially the music!

This is, and always will be, my favorite Castlevania game. This was the first CV game I ever played and I f'ing loved it. I loved the platforming action, rpg and adventure elements, and the music...holy shit, the music. The first time I experienced the day to night to day cycle I couldn't believe it...A game that actually felt like time existed in the game itself. Does it get a little tedious? Sure, but I still like the fact that they did something new and different. Plus, this is my favorite version of Simon Belmont. Keep on gaming, gamer dudes!

if you just play this game without any tips or knowing anything in advance, it's pretty hard to figure out, like, what youre supposed to do at certain points. i mean it's alot of trial and error, to figure out that youre supposed to drop holy water to dip down to buy a chain whip. how the hell are you supposed to just discover that. you have to just play the game all the time to discover stuff by accident.

Here’s basically how this game played out for me. Go to school: tell friend I can’t find Dracula’s castle. Tells me what to do at the cliff. Go home and try, get lost and still can’t find it. Go to school the next day, talk to friend again, go right after the tornado, not left dummy. Lol. I think my group of friends collectively beat this game together on the playground more than we each individually figured it out. It’s probably why I’m so forgiving towards its design today. You kind of just had to be there for this one.

HA! Me neither! I always tok the wrong path, and/or was too impatient to figure out the "timing" on "enemies" and just went "hog-wild" into stages and didn't take my time... Too my credit, I WAS only 10 years old, when it was released/I got he game, so my "gaming skills" were not the greatest... Haha! The game was/is also very cryptic too like many have mentioned...

Man the first time I ever saw this game beat as a kid was when one of my brothers best friends spent the night one weekend and we stayed up playing. He was one of those Nintendo whiz kids and just knew all the secrets. During the Dracula bossfight, he just kept paralyzing Dracula and beat the dog shit out of him. The cpu never had the chance to fight back. I forget how he did it- maybe using the holy water or something. Don’t remember bc I personally sucked at this game. There was no way to just know everything in those times. But yea- was once of the more memorable Nintendo childhood memories for me.

The most iconic track of the game, Bloody Tears, has made multiple appearances since in the series. Don't know all of them, though. Most recent hearing of it was in the Castlevania animated series.

Good grief! I did not realize this game was that cryptic. I remember playing this when I was 7 years old, and for the life of me could not beat this. If I was not watching this video, I would have never knew this game had this many side quests. I guess they do not call this Simon's Quest for nothing lol.

This is what I do everytime I play this game: 1-Buy Holy water. 2-Save/grind 100 hearts and buy thorn whip in Jova. 3- Carefully make your way to Aldra and grind hearts off the two mobs between aldra and the Dead River. Make 250 hearts. For Morning star and White crystal. 3- After getting the hearts carefully make your way to Oldon. Kill every mobs using holy water and whip combination, since holy water slow mobs down briefly. 4-At Oldon buy the morning Star then buy the white crystal in Jova and the rest will be easier. If you do this right withouth dying and wasting time you will get the the items you need and good ending.

This was the first game I beat on the NES when I was a kid. I must have been 7 or 8. Had to have Nintendo Power for the cryptic Nintendo BS. The last boss fight, I just threw down some sacred flames and Dracula just chills there then dies. Easiest final boss ever. This game, along with Megaman 2 had soundtracks that kick ass.

***** My brother and I both beat this game when we were kids ... without the use of Nintendo Power. Back then it was all about trial and error along with hours upon hours of free time used up in the pursuit of that almighty "You Win" screen. Beating Simon's Quest was certainly doable despite what followers of AVGN believe nowadays.

I was a little kid back then and I was able to beat it without too much trouble, that is, once I knew about the Red Crystal at that damn cliff. I always thought Castlevania 2 wasn't nearly as hard as a lot of games back then.

+rev It took a lot of experimentation. But in those days, many Nintendo games were cryptic, Legend of Zelda among them. So when the phrase "kneel down" or "pray" (can't recall the exact wording) popped up? My younger brother and I kept trying different things at that cliff wall ... one of which was crouching for a while. Voila! Tornado transport!
