Hi Retro Game Fans!!
Here's how I converted a vintage NES Gamepad to USB connectivity using a cheap USB keyboard. This video was produced and uploaded following a recommendation from KZfaq user Eazy Hax after I watched and commented on his video on Retropie controller options. His video can be seen here: • Video
Due to the length of this video, here are some quick links you can use to jump around to the key sections of the tutorial:
0:00 Introduction and Background
8:01 USB Keyboard circuit board mapping
17:04 NES Gamepad Disassembly
23:31 NES Gamepad circuit board modifications
26:44 Final assembly and testing
There are simpler and easier options available to connect a vintage controller via USB (Gamepad to USB adapters, for example) but the method I present in the video also provides you with the option to actually ADD buttons to your controller, if you so desire.
If you build one of these...or something based on this video...let me know...or let me know if you have any other questions, suggestions or thoughts in the comments section below.
Thanks for watching and have fun.

Nice to hear from another local and thanks for the subscription. I hope you at least got a little useful information from the video. I'm working on some other video ideas and hope to continue posting them on a somewhat regular basis. If you're into retro gaming and electronics stuff in general, you should check out the Micro Center in Sharonville sometime. They carry a lot of this kind of stuff, including Raspberry Pi and general hobby electronics parts and supplies. I don't work for them...I just really like that place!

I want to connect modern gamepad (USB or WIreless) to an old game console with 9-pin port. Can't find any useful info.

That’s an interesting idea! I did some searching myself, and I can’t find anything out there on the market that you could use to adapt a modern USB controller to a vintage NES console. The only way I can think of to use a modern controller on vintage NES games would be to play them using emulation software on a PC or retropie system.

I am pleased to find out about this method since i still am too cheap to spend any money on a gamepad😅 Yet I play all those games on an android emulator. All the six older duplicate chinese nes gamepads in the attic are gonna have a tough time from here on.😂

@frankschuler2867

I'm not terribly familiar with the Switch. However, this controller conversion should work with any device that is compatible with a standard USB keyboard...provided you can map the buttons to the desired function within the device.

Now idk why USB controllers are so cheap for now 10 minutes ago I find a Sega Saturn controller for 8 bucks idk if you can use it for PC but I don't have PC so maybe I will buy a USB C to USB A Adapter

I think USB versions of vintage gaming controllers have simply become so readily available that the prices kinda had to come down at some point. I have to admit that I've never held a Sega Saturn controller, so, I don't know how the modern USB versions feel compared to the vintage controllers. But for NES controllers, there's nothing like using the original vintage equipment. None of the modern USB NES controllers I've tried had the same button feel as the vintage controllers. It throws your whole game off! Haha.

Everything with USB on it works on PC. A Titan 1 running Max Aim DI in the background. You can use cheap controllers like these on modern game consoles. No reason to spend $60 on a controller. Use a PC with Titan 1 and Max Aim DI. Bamm , $4 nes controller working on Nintendo switch, be smart .

@frankschuler2867
@frankschuler2867 5 жыл бұрын
@@darealwy It's conceivable. But, you would need to do some tinkering. You may be able to hack apart a wireless keyboard and wire it into an NES Gamepad in a similar way to what I showed in this video...but...the additional parts (wireless communication parts, batteries, etc.) would probably be too large to fit inside of the Gamepad which would require you to mount them to the outside of the Gamepad or mount them inside of an external box attached to the Gamepad via a cable...not too convenient. I'll do some digging around. An alternative may be to hack apart a different wireless game controller and steal parts from it...but there still probably wouldn't be enough room inside of the NES Gamepad enclosure to house all of it. Let me do some digging...

Does the connector look like an original NES connector? If so, try this adapter...look at the 7-pin controller connector on this adapter and make sure it matches the plug on your controller, though: www.amazon.com/NES-Controller-Converter-Adapter-Windows-Nintendo/dp/B01GA43IN0/ref=sr_1_60?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1520225193&sr=1-60&keywords=nes+usb

Can you do this with an N64 controller?
@frankschuler2867
@frankschuler2867 5 жыл бұрын
The tough part would be the analog joystick on the N64 controller. Using this USB keyboard method, you can really only transmit button presses or directional pad presses (digital signals, i.e., the types of signals that are either on or off).

All that inconvenient process is bypassed when simply trace out tracks on keyboard matrix.
@frankschuler2867
@frankschuler2867 6 жыл бұрын
That is true. I attempted to trace them out when I first constructed the gamepad years ago, but, it did not produce the desired key presses. Either I goofed (which is entirely possible) or the keyboard PCB is somewhat defective (which also seems possible given that I was unable to reproduce all of the standard button presses as I progressed through the various PCB pad combinations). Either way, it works correctly now...I just wish those USB to NES adapters had been available at that time...in which case none of us would be watching this video right now...lol.

@@catalyst2694 Unfortunately, no. The internal circuitry inside of an unmodified NES gamepad is not compatible with a USB port. There is, however, a fairly simple and cheap way to accomplish what you are trying to do. Use a NES to USB adapter cable. Get one of these: www.amazon.com/Tomee-NES-USB-Controller-Adapter-pc/dp/B00HM3QCN2/ref=sr_1_2?crid=Z4OA2UMCEEHG&keywords=nes+usb+adapter&qid=1549736613&s=gateway&sprefix=nes+usb+ada%2Caps%2C154&sr=8-2

@Stéphane Mallette Do you mean you cut the cable on the SNES Classic controller and just tried to attach a USB connector to it? That would only work if the SNES Classic controller is actually a USB device AND you were able to match the wires up correctly to a USB connector. It's possible that it is a USB device and you simply got the wires mixed up. Or, maybe it needs to have a driver installed in order to use it on your computer. I'll need to do some research!
@frankschuler2867
@frankschuler2867 2 жыл бұрын
@Stéphane Mallette It looks like this is what you need. It is dirt cheap. It turns out the SNES Classic controller is NOT USB. This thing from Amazon includes an adapter you can plug your SNES Classic controller into to convert it to USB...it even includes a second controller. Good luck! www.amazon.com/EMiO-Edge-Gamepad-SNES-Mini-nintendo/dp/B073HPD5TC/ref=sr_1_6?keywords=snes%2Busb%2Badapter&qid=1639003459&sr=8-6&th=1

The simplest way to do that would probably be to buy a "PS2 controller to USB" adapter. I did a quick search for them on Google and it looks like they can be had for less than $10!

In that case, you might consider also getting a cheap PS2 controller (or a used one) to steal the cable from. Do you think it's possible to repair the controller cable you have? If it was cut or chewed up somehow, you could probably just repair the connections.

That is always an option. However, the reproduction NES controllers usually don't have the same button feel as the original controllers. I've tried a few different ones, and the buttons sort of "click" more than "squeeze" like the originals. It really does make a difference, in my experience!
