Great review with great advice, can't fault it. Nest have recently released a new subscription for $5 per month ($50 annual) for 5 days storage which makes it more competitive!
@TechHiveVideo6 жыл бұрын
Yes! We did a short video on that yesterday. That makes the Nest cameras a bit more attractive. They're still not the cheapest out there, both in terms of initial hardware cost and monthly running cost, but the new $5 option makes them more competitive. There's also a 50% discount for subsequent cameras.
@cleonbrady79135 жыл бұрын
Dear Nest, You have a great product. Home security is a necessity these days. Thers are a few issues. 1. The subscription is expensive. 2. The connection wire is kept outside or drill a huge hole. 3. There is not an option for storage. 4. Paying to keep personal vids in Google cloud vs. Personal storage is a huge let down. Please take this into consideration if you want to remain competitive.
@ssing71134 жыл бұрын
Cleon Brady. Cloud is competitive. No one wants clutter in their house. Second their app is amazing. Everything is subscription based. Get use to it or complain forever. It’s how everyone is going. Might as well go with google which has a ridiculous amazing app and can support multi other products. Yes the connection is wired. It’s clean. Who wants junk setup. Hire someone or learn how to wire route. Imagine walking by a house that has all these wires running along the walls and now imagine a setup with clean no wires and just a beautiful camera... take your pick

An absolute must is to have a security light close to the camera so it records in colour at night, i have my nest hello turn on my security lights when it detects a person using stringify to my sonoff switches, so my swann wired system records in colour. i spent a while with testing and positioning of lights and cameras but its well worth the extra effort to record in colour.
@TechHiveVideo6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tip. The motion lights near my camera are regular old-fashioned security lights but they will come on with movement at the porch. We'll shortly have a video review of the Arlo security lights, which can not only be triggered by the camera but have their own motion sensors and can trigger cameras.

Hi, I bought a nest outdoor iq yesterday and its so slow, anywhere from 2 seconds to 30 seconds for stringify to turn on my sonoff switch, i currently have an arlo/arlo pro/nest outdoor iq all sat next to each other all turning separate switches to find the fastest and i never get the same result, i may have to try a z wave outdoor pir. cheers

I like the information about the size of file 400GB minimum. Did not consider that before. Nice and detailed report. Great useful facts.
@TechHiveVideo6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Over the last few weeks, I've been monitoring the usage more closely and it hasn't used 400GB in a month. (The app says it will 'try not to go over'). I reckon it's probably using closer to 200GB per month, but that's probably dependent on the scene and how much changes. Mine doesn't change much so the compression can probably be a bit more aggressive. Anyway, it's still something to keep in mind, especially with several cameras.
@davethewebguy4 жыл бұрын
@@TechHiveVideo The logical question I have is: Can you turn OFF constant video recording? I would only want clips of motion sent to the cloud and nothing else (except when I log in for live view). It would be pretty egregious if you couldn't turn continuous uploading off.

Depends on your home. If people are able to sneak into your backyard and access your house from there then you should secure that equally much as the front. If thieves see that big mofo camera on the front of your house they’ll try the back of your house right away.

I realize this is an older video, I'd love to see Google allow local NVR storage and offer a PoE camera. What most fail to realize is the value isn't necessarily in the cloud storage, but in the cloud AI API to analyze and filter out false alarms and detection and to add (good or bad) facial recognition. Most cameras are 99% useless in that false alarms make them that way. You can also argue cloud API reliability and privacy vs local detection filtering e.g. Synology NVR Deep Learning (NVR DVA3219). Anyway nice video.

I've got 4 swann cameras and 2tb hard drive, had them for years. They do the job, not brilliant but cost £350 and no further costs
@brianwill54246 жыл бұрын
Nest makes a good looking camera, but I can't imagine anyone in their right mind would pay $100/year for cloud storage. The fact is there are so many cameras out there that provide free weekly cloud storage. My personal favorite is the Armorax camera; live streaming, free cloud storage, on-board SD card storage and no fee to use the app..it's literally everything a Nest is for a lot less money.
@TechHiveVideo6 жыл бұрын
Brian, The $100 also gets you remote access to your cameras from a smartphone or computer, detection zones and smartphone alerts, so it's more than just cloud storage. Nest's key selling point is that it is continuously recording, so even if the camera fails to catch something as an alert you have video of it. I've looked for Armorax online but can only find a traditional monitored security system, so I can't compare them.

Nice review. Add a night vision test to demonstrate if faces can be distinguished at 5', 10' or 15'. Honestly this system costs a fortune to buy and to run, especially and I’m amazed that this reviewer hasn’t stressed it more robustly. Personally, I couldn’t care less what the mounting plate is like compared to the old one etc. The fact is, these cameras will usually exceed or seriously eat up anyone’s monthly data allowance from their ISP. If you do a search on the net, you’ll find loads of people seriously fed up with these..... often requiring changing ISP or updating and paying more to get a bigger allowance. One person with two cameras was using 400GB a month out of a monthly limit of 500gb. He reckoned it’s the same data usage as watching 59 movies on Netflix. The Nest doorbell is just as bad, using loads of monthly allowance. In addition to most probably having to pay more for WiFi, there’s the initial high purchase cost and then the monthly subscription PER CAMERA.....heavens above, imagine having three of them eating up data allowance and costing between £40 and £240 year PER CAMERA..... over 5 years, it would be cheaper to be burgled. I’ll give this one a miss. Looks like a massive headache to me. None of this mentioned in the review and who knows why a British reviewer feels the need to talk US dollars.......

Excellent review. My primary interest is home security for protection against (1) car prowls (just this past week, sometime during the night, when I was asleep), and (2) when no one is home during the day. Also, my home network is very unreliable, and very short range, so while this Nest camera is attractive, it's just not for me. Thanks for the education.
@TechHiveVideo6 жыл бұрын
The advantage of Nest is that it would record everything, so however close someone comes to your driveway, you'll have the video if needed. But to be effective you'd have to pair it with a motion-detecting security light. If you have an unreliable network connection, consider the Netatmo Presence. That records video to a local SD card and you stream from the unit itself. It uses a tiny amount of bandwidth. It also has a built-in light. www.techhive.com/article/3137570/security-cameras/netatmo-presence-review-this-outdoor-home-security-camera-floodlight-justifies-its-high-price-tag.html

Good news. They are changing their plan cost substantially. You can pay a one set fee for the whole home. No matter the number of cameras. Might not offer the 30 days. Should be out by end of this month 5/2020. Fee is 200 or something like that. I have three locations. So it is about 1600 a year. More than happy to pay around 600. But many of my cameras on 30 days. Just migrating from nest to google so two months ago on a support call they had an ETA of April. But that was before the Virus. So sure will be delayed. That is a great deal.

Very good review. I find it amazing however that they have no way to set the cameras up so that they only record video when they sense motion and force you to use the 24/7 recording? I would think many people may have more enclosed areas where they don't need constant recording where motion-sensing would be just fine and use a lot less data. That seems like an amazingly dumb error on their part to not offer that option in their app. Especially considering the price.

There are 50% discounts on subsequent cameras, so 2 cameras would be $75 per year and three cameras $100 per year under the new scheme. Check out Nest Aware on the company's web site for full details.

Unknown Man And when the thieves find your recording system, they will take that as well. I prefer the cloud. Once recorded no one without access to your account is able to remove it. And the notifications on your phone while you are away are like 80% of the value of the camera’s. If anything happens to your home you can act right away instead of finding out about it after getting home.

I am always a little miffed that none of you reviewing this camera, took the time to simply take shots of a license plate or lawn sign, at different distances, (5 feet. 10 feet. 20 feet. 30 feet. etc) with different cameras to really get a real more informed review on exactly how far a particular camera can see clearly. I wish people would actually review the lens capabilities of these cameras.

If they would let you use your storage instead of the cloud, I would have purchased this in a heartbeat. Oh well.

I really don't think any wifi security camera needs to hide the power cable.
@Engineer97364 жыл бұрын
You want it to be hidden because it’s ugly. Also, the connector on the IQ version is much smaller than the non-IQ version, so you only need a 13mm hole in your wall instead of 22mm.

God knows why they don't have a hub storage thing u can buy instead of subscription . It's not hard now is it come on....... and you would sell loads of them ! The fact they don't sell the alarm system in Europe aswell currently is a complete joke . I've waited 18 months now for it . Hive are way ahead on connectivity but the nest thermostst is just so much nicer . If nest pulled there finger out they could dominate the market . Crazy subscription prices will kill your market on cameras no matter how "good" the camera is . Sort out a DVR nest for gods sake . I would buy 3 iqs if u did Rock and a hard place .
