A woman struggles to care for her disabled brother.
NEST is used with permission from Liza Koifman. Learn more at tomasandliza.com.
Janna and her brother Loek have been on their own since their parents have died. Since then, she takes care of the family farm and her sibling, who is disabled.
But life is hard for Janna, who is often left alone. She has to watch her friends move forward, hitting the milestones of adult life. But Janna seems stuck, with no one to talk to and no one to share the emotional toll. She slowly reaches a breaking point, putting her at a crossroads between duty and desire.
Subtlety is initially the main characteristic of writer-director Liza Koifman's dramatic short. Though often lovely to watch, with a finely tuned eye for small, crystalline detail, it exists in a muted, quiet register, which seems to reflect both the main character and her situation in life. Yet this earthy, almost bucolic setting belies the turmoil underneath, born of a situation of almost crushing obligation intertwined with love.
The film has a patient, observant lens, especially for the details on how Janna cared for Loek every day, from brushing his teeth and feeding him to the food that ends up on her shirt. It captures Janna at work on the farm, but even when that is done, her work still doesn't end, since she needs to care for Loek, who can't do many basic skills by himself. There is a documentary quality to the images, with a certain naturalistic clarity, and the editing and rhythms often let the images breathe and acquire a poetic quality and resonance as a result.
The writing, too, remains understated and spends the first half of the film carefully building Janna's world and situation with painstaking care. An intelligent, reserved distance characterizes this portion of the film, creating a "wide lens" of an insular world -- not without its love, but devoid of liveliness and energy. Janna floats in and out of his landscape, stoic and matter-of-fact about fulfilling her duties to home and family.
Koifman -- who plays Janna as well as directs -- plays her with a calm matter-of-factness that initial viewing might mistake as peace and acceptance. She possesses supreme patience with Loek and a seemingly serene competence with running the farm. But halfway through the story, she comes into focus, revealing this surface is much more fragile than it seems.
In a touching scene where the siblings visit their mother's grave, Janna breaks down, revealing the agony she's in, and watching her curl up on the grave as if waiting to be cuddled is heartbreaking. As a character, she remains in focus for the second half of the film, and the fragility she reveals colors the rest of the events, culminating in a final heartbreaking sequence that is quietly wrenching for this small family, and for viewers.
NEST retains its commitment to subtlety from beginning to end, an emotional coloring that asks for both patience and investment from viewers at the beginning. But this subtlety also gives its final scenes -- which, in the hands of a less skilled filmmaker, would seem melodramatic -- a quiet pathos and power all the more compelling in its understatement.
It also puts the spotlight on actor Leonard van Herwijnen's remarkable performance as Loek, who, despite his disability, fully begins to understand just what has happened to him. The arc he travels in the final scene is of a short duration in terms of time -- but it's an immense descent in emotion, carrying along invested viewers with him into a wilderness of confusion and ultimately devastation.

I'm 23. My mother passed away two years ago. My father is caring for my non-verbal autistic older brother. This highlights a big problem in most countries. It is almost impossible to take care of someone disabled at home without help and the government gives no help unless the person is indigent. Then what happens is if you hire someone to help then it eats up everything you have worked your whole life to attain until you are indigent and then the government will help. There needs to be something done.

I spent a good while taking care of my great grandmother during the pandemic who had a lot of health issues, the main one being lung cancer. It was one of the most difficult things I have ever had to do. Putting on a smile and being strong for her every single day. She couldn't move around by herself, so we had to take her to the bathroom and such. One time I was unable to help her and felt awful. I ran crying to my mom for help. She would tell me she wanted to go to the movies and telling her she couldn't go was heartbreaking because she was dying and I couldn't even do that for her. I miss her a lot still.

His utter confusion and inability to comprehend the change or adapt or cope and the house being his mind and world where he is now alone while the others try to get in but are unable to communicate and draw his attention away from the confusion and loneliness he is now experiencing. Someone mentions the song the woman was humming at the end, 'Smile', as being recorded by a long gone actress, giving the impression that she was THE person to record/sing it. There were MANY others, such as Nat King Cole, Caroline Bowman, Jimmy Durante, just to name a few. The lyrics were composed by John Turner, and Charlie Chaplin was the first to sing it in his movie "Modern Times" back in 1936. I don't like people saying something as absolute when that being said is not correct. Sort of like the song "Black Betty". Just because the one-hit band, 'Ram Jam', recorded it and it was a hit (yes, the only one for the band) doesn't mean it was THEIR original tune. It was ORIGINALLY a sort of 'sing-song' that had NO music originally, but something that some of the plantation slaves would chant just loud enough for the overseers to hear and get angry about. The song was first recorded in the field by US musicologists John and Alan Lomax in December 1933, performed a cappella by the convict James "Iron Head" Baker and a group at Central State Farm, Sugar Land, Texas (a State prison farm). Baker was 63 years old at the time of the recording. It wasn't until a very famous Jazz musician, who's stage name was "Lead Belly", recorded the tune in HIS style in 1939 that it became a well known and liked tune, and VERY risque for the times.🙄

This is just accurate, i have an autistic brother, he has cerebral palsy, he can be cute but also such a horrible person, he is agressive almost everyday, with my parents and with me; he has grown taller and he is stronger than my dad, my mom gives him pills but they do nothing at this point. I'm stressed, I'm just 15 and my brother seems to not get better, when Will I have to take care of him? Will I make it past through it? He is perversed, agressive and unpredictable, my parents are getting older and older, they didn't have us at such a young age. What am I gonna do? I don't think you should have to sacrifice your whole life just for your brother. You only have one life to live and it's not fair for anyone to ask that you sacrifice your life. Maybe try to look ahead to see what kind of help can be provided to your brother. I don't have any answers but I just know that the burden shouldn't fall entirely on you. You have a life to live too.
@simiabba
@simiabba 3 жыл бұрын
It will work out. Maybe you can get help for him (in the future), like caregivers from an agency, to give you breaks. There are places/organizations that can help you. But you are only 15, so you have your own life to live now and in the future. Can you maybe talk to your parents about your (understandable) concerns about the future? You're his little sister (your brother's older, is that right?) and it's your parents responsibility to make plans for the future. It will be ok. I wish you all the love and luck. xoxo

And this is exactly why I would never have a disabled child. The reality is that during pregnancy you just can’t get a definitive prognosis for day to day life. Reality being what it is, there is a strong possibility that the child would outlive the parents. I would NEVER leave that huge and unfair responsibility to one of my other children. I personally would love my disabled child and care for them for the rest of my life...but what then? The siblings deserve to make their own way in life and do whatever they choose without restrictions or obligations that they didn’t choose for themselves. It’s also cruel to the disabled child to leave them all alone in a world without you and to be placed in an institution- horrific. I wish love to everyone in this position! X

I know it's been a bit but this film doesn't sit right with me. It's hard to take care of a loved one, but the idea that disabled people are nothing but a burden is a harmful myth that gets us killed. Even though the caretaker commits suicide at the end of this, in real life it's statistically far more likely she would have killed or in some way abused her brother. There's also no effort to communicate what the brother is going through internally until the very end. He's just a silent prop for someone else's emotional journey.
@Emcee91
@Emcee91 Жыл бұрын
That’s your perspective though. As someone with a disabled brother, this is constantly on my mind that one day when my parents are gone, I will have to look after him. It’s not a burden, but it’s scary to think about. You won’t understand that unless you live with that reality. I don’t want to look after him by myself, I want support, yet there’s very little, and that’s terrifying.
@annasimpson4147
@annasimpson4147 Жыл бұрын
@@Emcee91 I commented what I said a little bit over a year ago but for what it's worth I think we can both be right about this. Disabled people need to be taken care of but it's unfair to foist that on family members who might not be ready or qualified to do so. The truth is that that caring labor has to be done, and it should be done, but it should be upheld and supported by society rather than seen as a sacrificial duty. I wish you the best and I hope that you and your brother both can have your needs met.

I hate this film. Loek already lost his parents, now his sister as well. If she couldn't look after him, and wanted to pass him over to the people at the end of the film, she didn't need to kill herself. She could've remained in his life to ensure he isn't mistreated in the system. It's heartbreaking that they would portray disabled people as nothing more than a burden. My brother keeps me going if anything, and words are not needed to express or feel the love there.

@@Ffollies Listen.. i lived on the countryside of the Netherlands for some time. People there are warm, hearty, grounded and very responsible. If shed gone somewhere, she wouldve made sure that Loek is cared for, not just leaving with a letter he would never read. If u have a farm and land there, u are well-off already... it makes no sense to just leave everything behind. If she really had gone somewhere, why didnt she sell the farm and the land, and leave Loek in a facility where he is cared for? And suicide doesnt look very likely.. she was sad and maybe stressed, but she didnt look unstable... and even then she wouldve made sure that Loek is cared for, if she really loved him. Doesnt make sense, too. The house, the farm, the land, the animals are already maybe 1-10 million Euro worth, depending on how desperate u gonna sell... do u think she leaves this behind, together with her disabled brother... for what?
