Please read FAQ below! In this video, I'm showing how I replaced my old 1E30 White Rodgers thermostat with the Nest Thermostat E. This particular old thermostat only has the two black and white wires so I wasn't sure if it would work but it does! I hope this video is helpful. Note: Please do your own research before replacing your own old thermostat. I'm not responsible for any issues that may occur.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
I've gotten some similar questions and comments. Here are a few of them (slightly rewritten) along with my answers:
** "How's the thermostat working for you now?" **
A few months after this installation we replaced the entire furnace (which had nothing to do with the Nest E) with a newer unit as it wasn't able to keep up with the cold weather we had that winter. It was our first winter in the house and we didn't know how it would hold up. The new machine needed way more connections so we had to get the Nest 3rd Gen instead. The Nest E did the job well for those months. I like the design much better than the 3rd Gen.
** "Do I need a C (Common) Wire?" **
You might but it wasn't needed for our setup. Luckily, we didn't have any issues with the battery of the thermostat running out of juice. Many people have reported that it works fine for them as well. Beforehand, I did some research myself and it is supposed "steal" power (when it is not heating) to keep the battery charged. Though, it may be the case that your Nest E won't stay charged. Ours did.
TIP 1: Before first use, make sure to fully charge the thermostat. For some people, this helped to keep their Nest Thermostat E charged.
TIP 2: I've read about being able to swap the wires (when you have a 2-wire setup like this) which could solve it as well. I haven't tried this myself and I obviously can't guarantee anything.
TIP 3: If you want to rule out any of these power issues, you could get a C-Wire installed or do it yourself. There's plenty of resources out there.
** "Your "vintage" thermostat will outlive the Nest." **
True Story. Now what? :)
** "Nest SUCKS, you stupid millennial" **
Well, thanks for watching the video I guess? I don't really understand why you watched it and left a comment as you're clearly not a fan of these products... But hey, thanks again and I hope you're having a good day! :)

Pro HVAC tip: Don't remove the wires from the thermostat before removing the backplate! If you do so they may not have enough slack and fall into the hole in the wall! Remove the backplate and use it to pull slack in the wires before you disconnect the wires from the old terminals.

mine has a separate input N and L I suppose there is where I will plig the hot cable (240v AC -> L ) and the neutral cable to N. But then it has Y2 Y1 and L again in a separate rail Y2 is cold something and Y1 heat something (Cant remember the exact name on the manual I dont have it in front of me I suppose its one relay for AC or something and the other Y1 if you have a furnace like I do) so should I short now Y1 with the different L on the separate rail?

Thanks Joe! It'd be awesome to get this featured on Nest sites. :) I'm glad this video is being watched and also being helpful to you. And I agree, most videos are about replacing newer thermostats and that's' why I thought the KZfaq community could benefit from another how-to. Thanks so much for watching and I appreciate the kind words!

I think it’s important to note this is for the Nest E and not the new Nest. They look pretty much the same but I had an issue with the regular Nest with two wire. I took it back to HD but after reading the Nest E is different and like the Nest Gen 3 which I have two of already and work just fine with the two wire and no C wire. Great video, thank you!

We used to receive a few error messages from the Nest about the furnace shutting down. I don't believe the error message had to do with how the Nest was wired (just two wires) and had more to do with fact that furnace was very old. So, after two years, no problems with the way the Nest was wired. Hope this helps.@@asherrz

Some connections to thermostats won't work for long because not enough power is supplied. Which is why, the technician said it won't work. Most people will need to connect another wire known as the C-Wire, from either the transformer, a wall plug kit, or in most cases there's extra color wires behind the wall not being used, and you can connect it to C in thermostat, and then go to your furnace wire panel and connect the same wire to C. Look up C wire nest thermostat. Without the C wire, most people will have problems after a few months saying not enough power in thermostat.

@stphinkle 10 ай бұрын
@RangerElite18 See if you have any unused conductors in the wire that goes from the theromstat to the air handler (sometimes these are hidden behind the thermostat or sometimes you have to cut further into the multi-conductor cable. If there are extra conductors, you can connect them to the terminals you need on the thermostat and then connect them on the air handler (other end of the thermostat cable) to the appropriate terminals. if you have used all the conductors you may need to run a new {or additional) thermostat wire with enough conductors for all the functions. Typically it goes as follows: Aux - Auxillary Heat (Heat Pump) B -> Damper (Heat Powered) on Heat Pump Systems. Common Wire on some non-heat pump systems (See C Wire Below) C -> Common. Provides 24V power to thermostat. Goes to other side of transformer D or DHUM - > Dehumidifer E -> Emergency Heat Relay (Heat Pump Systems) G -> Fan Relay Note:, G2, or G3 wires allow for fan speed control. H or HUM -> Humidifier L -> Indicator Light Alert R or RH -> Transformer (Single Transformer or Heat Transformer) RC -> Cooling Transformer (Two Transformer System) S, S1, or S2 -> Sensor or Indicator Light Wires T -> Outdoor Temperature Sensor W (or W1) -> Heat Relay W2, W3, etc -> Additional stages of heat Relays Y (or Y1) -> Cooling Compressor@@RangerElite18

Our old thermostat also had 2 wires and at first the Nest worked fine. But we started having issues with the furnace not turning on and the heating guy said it was because the Nest was drawing Power from the furnaces’ mother board, ruining it and needing to be replaced. So to be safe I’d have someone run a “C wire” to the thermostat that’s job is only to supply power to the Nest.

Pretty much any thermostat will work for a 2 wire system as long as you have batteries or if it is mechanical instead of digital.

One of the cleanest install videos I’ve seen this far. Question I just purchase the nest thermostat Gen 4 is that the same set up process as this one in your video ?

Looks like I got screwed with the Honeywell needs a C wire thermostat. I don’t want to install a big bulky transformer to get the 24 VAC so I’m gonna bite the bullet and see what else is out there for a heat only two wire furnace. I’ll be looking at the two wire programmable thermostats. I think they go from about $30 to $50 and there are also smart ones out there. Thanks for the video. If I decide to do it this way, I’ll be coming back for another look. Like button smashed.

Perfect! Just what I needed. I dunno if you might have an answer to this but I noticed my furnace still turns on when I turn off the power to the house. It is a gas floor furnace. Do you think it will still work?

Great video, saved my plenty of grief. Can the Nest E also be used for cooling?

Thankyou for these clear instructions! I have the Nest learning thermostat 3rd generation and was replacing an old Honeywell that also had only the black and white wires. The included instructions does not account for that and the lettering system leaves you clueless.

Did it work for you? Have you had any battery problems so far with the Nest Learning?

We had a major problem installing the Nest thermostat. We have a two stage furnace that apparently requires special wiring for the Nest. We did not know we had a two stage furnace until I inadvertently blew a fuse in the furnace panel (in the attic). You may have THREE power supply switches to your furnace. You need to turn them all off before you start. We tried to work with Nest and the technician had us shift wires over and over during a one hour period. It was a nightmare of difficulty in handling tiny wiring. Nothing worked. Even the contractor we hired after this debacle was not able to get the Nest to function properly and stop giving error messages. IF YOU ASSUME THAT YOUR FURNACE IS COMPATIBLE WITH NEST YOU MAY BE WRONG. We returned the Nest and put in an Emerson (easy read) thermostat. It works fine and our single story home is very comfortable. Sometimes modern digital equipment is more trouble than it is worth. If you want to install a smart thermostat yourself, or use a contractor who is not a "Nest specialist" you may regret it. Sometimes "simpler" is really better. sanjosemike

Thank you for the very easy to understand video and tutorial. My house has a 2 wire setup just like yours but I’ve had a problem with the nest e battery not staying charged and it keeps disconnecting from WiFi. Have you found the same issues with yours?

Thats because you do not have the c wire. This allows constant recharge. This is a good video but it leaves out a key part of the installation.
