This is a nested ring box made for - Party - our Golden Retriever who recently passed away. The box was CNC cut from Oak and Maple and then glued, sanded, and hand finished. It appears to be a solid laminated block - but the ring configuration provides an interior compartment.

Thank you for the kind words!The inner rings panels are mostly profile cut paths and take about 8 minutes each to cut between both sides ( there were 3 of these ring segments)The Top and Bottom panels have a pocket cavity on the interior to retain the solid material for the top and bottom surface - and they take about 40 minutes to cut between both sides (there were 2 - the top - and the bottom)All together it was 1 hour and 45 minutes of cutting on the machine.The finished dimensions were 6.5 in x 9.5 in x 2.75 in

Hi. How do you do the reference point so that name is at center of lid after you have flipped it carve out inside? Thanks
@OakLines
@OakLines 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Munawar, Good eyes - the trick for 2 sided machining is the part registration. I've set my system up with a hard stop at the back to provide the Y registration, and I have engraved a center line along the center of the X travel. I have set the coordinate system in the controls so that X zero in in the middle of the travel at the line, and Y zero is at the back relative to the back stop. Then I simply draw a pencil line on the vertical face on the stock so that I can reference both sides (top and bottom) at the same X point. Position the stock against the back stop (Y register) and align the pencil mark with engraved center line (X register) and machine SIDE 1. Then to machine SIDE 2 - flip the stock end for end - keeping the same face against the back stop - and align the same pencil mark to the engraved center line. I know - a lot of words... ;-) You can see the process in this video: 2 sided machining - 101: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iNN-hMVy086odnU.html There are other registration approaches - but I've purposely set my machine up this way to handle 2 sided machining in a general purpose repeatable way for any size stock that will fit on the machine. We do it on almost with almost every setup that we run.

@OakLines

That was a 3/8" round over bit - with a pilot bearing. The pilot bearing follows the edge of the material - and allow you ease the edge over. The one I have is very old - but it's something similar to this set: amzn.to/37QYCHC

Thanks for the kind words.I spent the weekend redesigning this project to take advantage of VCarve Pro's new 2 sided machining support - it makes the design and preview much simpler. Prior to this I used layers to handle the multi sided machining - and it works - but is a bit of a trick to keep everything straight when you have to start mirroring layers. Anyway... Now everything looks and previews like the actual parts. You can find the VCarve Pro files here: www.oaklines.com/Projects/NestedRingBox/default.htm

Hi, I need your help :) I’m new to this domain, and I would like to purchase a desktop CNC like yours in order to produce miniature designs. The materials that I intend to use are copper, and wood. I noticed that the there are so many options when it comes to purchasing a CNC router and I don't want to make the wrong choice. Could you tell me please what are the more interesting specifications, and how to choose the most accurate one?
@OakLines
@OakLines 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Samir, For me - a large part of selecting the machine came down to a business need. I had parts to produce - so I wanted something I could hit the ground running with and be productive. If you're up for an adventure - you can source all the parts, electronics and software yourself - it's fun and not that hard. The allure of the DIY approach is strong - but I just needed to get making parts. Today for the hobby shop or light production I'd suggest looking at the following resources: Ready to Run ShopBot - light production - full sheet capable - great support Probotix - high end hobby or light production - specializes in less than full sheet sizes - great support Assembly Required CNC Router Parts - flexible machine sizes - all the parts and electronics - assembly required - high end hobby or light production DIY A lot of fun - but a time sink. If you're just looking for some fun and light hobby use - then the Shapeoko and X-Carvre might be fun - but remember this class of machine is not designed for production use. Have Fun!

great video. would you share the g-code with a newbie?
@OakLines
@OakLines 7 жыл бұрын
I'd be happy to help if I can. ;-) The g-code probably won't help you too much - because it's tuned up for my machine. But the design concept itself is really simple.Think about doing an X-Ray view looking done from above thru the box - there are really only 3 rounded rectangle shapes. The first represents the outer perimeter, the second represents in inner perimeter, and the third represents the shoulder on the flat between the two. All the machining paths are derived from just these three shapes. It is a bit of a mind bender to think through how you can achieve all of the desired pockets and profiles for 2 sided parts (top and bottom), and multiple parts (inner rings vs the Top and bottom)- but once you get the hang of it gets kinda fun - like a puzzle. Let me know if you want more detail, perhaps I could sit down and do a video walk through translating the design to the machine paths for you, that might be fun and useful.Thanks for watching!
