If you're referring to cast net horns, I inherited (from three different men) a bunch of both plastic and brass horns. You should be able to find them through netmaking suppliers. If you're talking about crab rings, I make my own which I will show you how in a short time. Keep your eyes open for galvanized hard wire about 1/8 " to 1/4" diameter.

Thank you for sharing your extensive knowledge through this great videos. I am working on a project that requires me use use traditional cotton seine twine. I am having a difficult time because the twine twists up so that the loops almost disappear. I tried unloading the needle and reloading from the opposite direction and it still twists. I would appreciate any hints that you may have to straighten out this twisting situation. Thank you

I have a bunch of gravel (from a torn up parking lot, I love free stuff!) and a bunch of honeysuckle, i'm going to try to make some sort of gravel separator tomorrow, I was looking at tying knots and came across your channel just now/// i'm at the 16 minute mark now, this is WAAYcool. maybe a piece of masking tape around your pinky to keep it from rubbing raw? that's what I used at the cotton mill, there was always masking tape somewhere

Hi, my name is Bruce and I have made an 8ft cast net using your great tutorial. Thanks for that by the way. I noticed in the beginning of your video that you showcased a shrimp net you made with a chain lead line. Can you explain how you attached that to the net and if you recommend it over a proper lead line. I have a hard time getting lead in my area and hope the chain is a good way around that. Thank you. Wonderful vids, I have learned a lot from. I do have a few questions-- Will this formula work with a cast net that has 5/8" square mesh or do I have to double the amount of meshes in each row since the size of mesh is half that of 1 1/4". Thank you very much

Thank you for the videos Sir. I was wondering what the smallest size net holes you can make if you had a different size dowel and a smaller fishing net needle. My project is to make chainmail using Dyneema fishing line, which is 15x stronger than steel and 40% stronger than kevlar at equal weight. The sting I will be using can hold 300 lbs per 8 strand line. Thank you for any answers you can provide.

Thank you very much for these very informative videos. What size gauge do you suggest for a general purpose survival type net? I've heard that if you make it too small the fish will just bounce off, whereas if you make it too large they'll just swim through.

I don't know what a survival net is. I use a 5/8" dowel for cast nets. I once made one using a 7/8" dowel and it had a nickname "the flying gill net". Thanks for watching, ask questions if you have a problem.

Okay, with regards to the bag net questions I started on section 3. Your explanation and seeing the green band for the attachment points here really helps. More questions if I may: Do the wideners continue into the bag section? Twine sizes: 6 is common, and 3,4,5 are more rare (but I've seen them). You specified #4 a few times in one of your nets. I assume that you prefer #4 but what of the other sizes and/or mixing twine sizes? Is #4 the best trade-off? Is #6 going to be fat and bulky? I'd like to try chain, but wonder if you prefer leads or chain? no rush, Thanks again!
@GulfCoastNetwork
@GulfCoastNetwork 8 жыл бұрын
Some don't, they stop at the bag beginning since it curls back up. In the net here, the wideners go all the way- its a baggy bag net. And I can't begin to tell you how many fish I caught with it over a ten year period. I hope to use it again later this summer.

Hi Sir, I love to watch your video, very informative. May I know how you would start your net with the monofilament line as the half hitch knot will slip and you will have problem with your second mash. What knot to use to prevent it ? Thanks
@GulfCoastNetwork
@GulfCoastNetwork 7 жыл бұрын
Well, you can start the net with nylon, switch to monofilament, then cut away the nylon, or when you make the half-hitch - go through it twice. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching and be on the lookout for more videos.

I have only watched the first two of your videos and they make me so happy :D I feel like I might be able to do this and I'm really looking forward to trying - you are excellent at explaining and showing in a nice and calm pace :) I'm planning on making a shrimp net for spring - would I just have to use a smaller piece of wood and a smaller netting needle to make the uhm, holes in the net smaller? Which size would you recommend for shrimps? (The shrimps in Denmark aren't all that big, really)

Hello from Greece I would like to know how we calculate how many eyes have to do in the beginning. If I want to make a "cast NET" with a radius of 2 meters and each eye has a length of 2 cm from knot to knot. How many eyes have to tie them in the beginning, and every how many eyes will begin to grow. Thanks for the great videos you have uploaded.

+Panos Mpalasis Thanks for watching Panos! It would be best to start making your net, slide everything off and see how it forms your circle. An extra hint - if you want your legger (each section of your net) to equal 2cm, then use a paddle spacer with that width. Good luck!

I really enjoyed your video. I have a couple questions. 1. How does the size of the dowel affect the net? 2. If I wanted to make a very wide net (say 10 feet wide) do I need to fit 10 feet worth of starter loops on my dowel all at once? 3. If I wanted to make a net with large squares (1 and 7/8") for a baseball batting cage net, what suggestions would you have (such as size of string, dowel and needle). I very much appreciate your time to post these videos. They are quite fascinating.
@GulfCoastNetwork
@GulfCoastNetwork 9 жыл бұрын
geadiin 1. The circumference of the spool determines the size of your mesh. 2. You don't have to fit all of your starter loops on the spool. Just like your netting, you just let the starter loops roll off to your left (assuming you're right handed). In section one, near the beginning, I show how quickly you can make netting. Take a look and be sure to subscribe as I'm close to uploading again. 3. Mesh is measured by stretch, its measured by the length of the mesh diamond. For what you describe, a spool of 5/8" or 3/4" would be advisable, then play with it some more if you like. Best of wishes.

Hey, I've been following your videos, and there's only one thing that is confusing me at the moment. Maybe because I'm using braided fishing line and not nylon, but is the flying dutchman know supposed to slip? I feel like when I finish my net, the the knots are going to tighten up on each other. Same thing with the starter loops, they keep slipping as well
@GulfCoastNetwork
@GulfCoastNetwork 7 жыл бұрын
Twine that is not bonded can and will loosen. Bonded twine that is old can also loosen. If you hang your net (as in making a cast net) the leads will tighten everything and your dip will lock in your knots. If you're not dipping, then you can add an extra half hitch (see section 4). Hope this helps.

@GulfCoastNetwork
@GulfCoastNetwork 8 жыл бұрын
Well Terry, thanks for watching. It depends on what kind of net you're making. What you're describing would be too big for a cast net, but just right for a crab ring or landing net. If you do plan on making a cast net It takes about a lb. of #4 which is about a mile of twine.
@shit2fly
@shit2fly 10 жыл бұрын
Hey could you give me a cast formula? starting loops and amount of wideners per 3 rows? I've made 2 of em but without any set process just doubling wideners per row until i get a decent radius, but i suspect i'm tying a lot more than would be necessary.
@GulfCoastNetwork
@GulfCoastNetwork 10 жыл бұрын
Take the amount of wideners you want,usually 11, 12, or 13 and multiply times 3. So I start with 33 knots (loops) for an 11, etc. Tie a mesh knot under that, then a widener, then 2 loops mesh. If you subscribe I am about to upload a section covering this. Good luck.

Are the knots in the net supposed to slip around by design or am I tying it incorrectly? Or maybe my material doesn't provide enough friction? I am using some synthetic mason line, and the knots keep loosening and slipping around, so I am having trouble keeping the "cells" of the net uniform.
@djAmiracle
@djAmiracle 7 жыл бұрын
Is it called flying Dutchman because the knots are flying all around? I read in another comment by Sleepy Baby mentioning "dipping" the net to "set the knots" ... is that what needs to be done for the knots to stop flying about? Do I need to find a Dutchman to help me with the dipping?
