Netero was hands down one of the coolest characters in HxH, I love the symbolism that no matter how strong another life force is, human intelligence and malice surpasses all of it and still poses a threat to any life form. Truly a masterpiece.

This old man Netero really answered Brian, "do you think I can't pray with a single hand?"

The nuclear symbolism is really strong in this arc especially if you consider the Japanese perspective. In this episode, Netero's line about "bottomless malice of the human heart" actually conveys a double meaning of "infinite potential for evolution" (which is also used in other subs) implying the Chimera Ants aren't the pinnacle of evolution. Rather, humans are because of the destructive (technological) means they use to dominate each other and other species to remain at the top of the evolutionary ladder. And it's also, from one perspective, why Netero mockingly laughs at Meruem's naivete and views the King as beneath him despite being outclassed.

Man hunter x hunter is just build different from other anime seriously this is a work of art and a masterpiece decade defining fight.

Remember the ball game in the Hunter test? Netero only used his left hand and right leg in the ball game But his left hand & right leg is torn off by Meruem

It’s crazy how in the “final battle” between human and monster, it’s the human that fits the title “monster” more.

This is definitelly one of my favorite episodes in anime. Basically, because of the real meaning of this fight: the humanity vs ants, evilness vs evilness, hard work and experience vs the ultimate being, the difference between a 120 years old man and a 40 days old pinacle of evolution. Also, there's some references: Netero lost his left arm and right leg (the sames he uses playing against Gon and Killua), Gungi's influence on Meruem ("you had me in checkmate from the start")

I love how anime has conditioned us all to think like "oh no, if our strongest boy can't beat the baddie in a fight, who can we trust to beat him?". And then HxH reminds us that the human race has far more terrible weapons than a guy who can punch things well. Fighting is how you defeat an opponent, but a nuke is how you eradicate a species.

I love this fight because it shows Meruem the true difference between being the peak of evolution in his species and being a random human. Being the peak of the evolution of his own species, Meruem's power, while incredibly great, is by definition capped at a certain point from which he just won't grow. On the other hand, while Netero indeed held his own against Meruem in a straight up battle, he won by using a cheap and dirty mass-produced bomb, which shows that humanity's potential not only is limitless but also not a result of power alone. Just the fact that this mighty King of an entire species is threatened by this random ass bomb that is not even the strongest weapon of humanity's arsenal is quite a message, and the show does stay on this message for a long time.

When the Narrator explains how Netero gained his power through training to the point of insanity, Meruem breaks this down in mere seconds. Without any proper training on Nen- he understood what the chairman put himself through to get to this point.

Netero kept hinting at the bomb, when he did the heart sign with his hands, directly above his heart How is that a hint? Well for starters, roses are associated with love

I love the 'infinite malice' reading because the fact that we're given usual Togashi background to a plot device (The miniature rose) tells us that this is the sort of things people can just make with relatively little effort and is enough to wipe out the god-like being of Meruem. That this fight was never a fight for the survival of humanity, it was just Netero putting himself up against a powerful opponent because he wanted to see if he could fight him, when in reality they could have just bombed the palace at a moments notice.

I always read the double meaning of evolution and malice, as well as Netero's rejection of Meruems position as this: Don't underestiate humans, unlike the ants, no one human is superior to another, yet humans yearn for superiority. This fact causes humans to fight, war and kill, cause death, injustice and discrimination against itself (malice) but on the flip side, the constant war for superiority and the malice it caused, in turn begets evolution. It is this very evolution which allowed humans with its individuality to surpass the king, and in turn save its species. A lot of people read the chimera ant arc as some critique about the cruelty of humanity, like some jaded art degree college student with green hair. It both is and isn't, it (accurately imo) describes how the cruel nature of humanity is both it's greatest sin and strength.
