@@whiskeyjack02 English is not my native language and I read it in mine but for what I remember this description does not mean that he is "skinny". Allright not as big as Cavill, but for me it mean that he does not look as the "Im pushing 10 cars at the same time" body type so not like heavy lifter strong, rather a rock climber strong, which is not skinny just not HUGE. But yeah Cavill is bigger than that but I think its not far from the truth.

I'm Polish. When I was a young adult my uncle shared The Witcher with me and I was hooked. Then I saw that Polish game studio made a game and then that the game was awesome and then the consecutive games were even better, it just kept me hyped. My culture, was being shared with other people and they were into it. Then I learned Netflix is about to make it and Sapkowski is a producer and Tomasz Bagiński who made cinematics for the games also is a producer. Then Henry was announced as Geralt and he was actively fighting to be Geralt because he loved the character. Then they said they will follow the books best they can. Then the show happened and just slid down the slippery slope and got worse and worse over time... I hope Sapkowski gets payed. He deserves the money. I like the main trio too I was skeptical of Yen at first but she grew on me. The show was weak af and gets weaker though. US companies should go fuck themselves with their singular close-minded worldview and lack of damn awareness of other cultures and their heritage. They pissed off Slavs with Witcher they pissed off Egyptians and Greeks with Cleopatra who else do they want to get mad? Asmon is correct if you want to change it, sure, do so, but make it better. LOTR did it. The Expanse did it. The Arcane did it. The latest Dune movie did it. The 3rd season of Star Trek Picard did it. Thing is they did it within the lore of the source material, the changes were awesome and the audience loved it. Edit. If you want to see cool modern take on Polish/Slavic folklore check out Legendy Polskie by Allegro here on KZfaq. Tomasz Bagiński was also involved in this project, which was one of the reasons I was hopeful when he was announced as part of the Netflix Witcher project.

There's an element to this that I feel a lot of people skip over. Time. One of the biggest reasons this is a problem is because the chance for a story people love to be adapted into a movie or show is slim, and if it isn't done right, the chances of it ever getting done right is almost nonexistent. When it fails Hollywood will think the story isn't lucrative. If by sheer luck it gets done again, it will be a decade or two later, with no guarantee that it will be good the second time either. This is especially true when the current show started out so well and it then went down the drain. So it makes sense people get angry when something they are passionate about is getting it's golden chance at being created visually butchered by a team of people that just want to push their world view in a place it has no business being in.

Same thing applies to Cowboy Bebop. When it comes down to recreating anime into real life, Cowboy Bebop is probably one of the most grounded in reality. There's no special powers, magic or over animated scenes. It's all based around technology that's less about form, and more about function, with nothing pushing the cyberpunk envelope. Humans move like they should, even Ed follows those rules. So the fact that Netflix fucked up something so easy to follow, speaks volumes on how they don't give a shit about original content. @Theanomoly it is slower paced. I found I hard to get into as well. However there's quite a bit of depth in the characters and story. Once you get over the initial speed bump, you start to really enjoy it. That's actually one of my issues with the Netflix adaptation. It had too much forced energy. For a series that had double the runtime per episode, they really tried to do too much with it, while also achieving to not do enough.

@@totallynottrademarked5279 not true. You have to understand that an anime will always be first and foremost, an anime. Even though it is more realistic, it's still stylised like an anime, of course movements will be smoother and enhanced. However Spike's fighting style is based on Bruce Lee's fighting style, Jeet Kune Do. If Netflix were faithful enough that your issue was the only issue, then this adaptation would be praised as a masterful recreation, and the second season wouldn't be cancelled a week or so, after the first season came out.

The main issue is not from the games, but how they have subverted the lore from the books. One thing to understand: the games (all three of them) take place after the books ended. The TV show is "basing" itself from the books, but at a VERY minimal level. I also thought season 1 was good until I read the books and found HOW much they changed the stories, and not in good ways either. Season 2 was even worse, including how they did Eskel dirty in that season. In fact, what they did to him completely changes the story and how they portrayed the Witchers in Kaer Morhen was a slap in the face to the witchers, as well as the fans of the books. But the majority of the complaints were NOT because they didn't look like the characters in the games. It all stems from how they have subverted the lore from the books and ruined many characters, as well as changed how and when they are present in the TV vs the books, and most not in a good way. In fact, a lot of it is just due to lazy writing, not understanding the lore, and now that we've heard, many in the writing room despised the books and the games, so they wanted to "change" it in a way where they felt it was "better". Where have we seen and heard that before?

I don't think even his performance will be enough to bring me back for S3. They said they deviated a little from the books? Alik Sakharov was a exclusive producer on the show for season 1, he directed the Pilot BUT he left because of creative differences with Lauren's version....this is what he had to say: “You see, in my perception, Eastern-European literature has a completely different pace. It is no coincidence that Andrzej Sapkowski has so many storylines and characters. The producers set the task of setting the adaptation at an action pace and filling it with colorful special effects. That was their vision. My vision was very different and I tried to convey it to them, giving my arguments. Unfortunately, I was not considered convincing enough, so I decided to leave the project.” And something about Henry Cavill: “Glad to hear it. By the way, Henry Cavill is the best thing in The Witcher, in my opinion. He absolutely nailed the role. Moreover, he is a very flexible actor who is able to listen and learn. I sincerely hope that he has many interesting and good projects ahead.” And hes NOT the only person who left. Tim Aslam the Costume designer for season 1 left, Sonya who made the beautiful soundtrack for s1 left, some actors left, a writer left, now Henry left. s1 was made without the appropriate preparation and without time to get things right. Tim Alan, the costume designer, didn't know who he was designing for nor the concept in which the clothes were worn. Henry's wig for Geralt wasnt ready....his own stylist had to work on it day and night to make it look more natural! For the Blaviken fight reshoot they had one day, henry brought in Wolfgang Stegemann and they worked on a fight choreography together, henry learned the whole fight in 2 hours!!! He saved Lauren's a** here and many more times. The writers didn't want geralt to have magic abilities btw....until henry insisted it was necessary to include.

Frodo? He had the Ring in his keeping for 17 years and Gandalf visited in the meantime...if you mean Bilbo, then he kept the Ring for about 60 years till events of The Hobbit to the beginning of Fellowship (the famous birthday party) then 17 years later Frodo's quest actually starts. In all that time Gandalf was investigating as well as doing other stuff being busy with the rise of Sauron and growing troubles in the world, as well as hunting for Gollum, participating in the White Council meeting (years after events of The Hobbit) and so on. Doing research on the Ring also takes time, since there are few actual written sources, the archives of Minas Tirith etc. The movies merely hint at the passage of some time from the birthday party of Bilbo but don't specify how much time passed (in any case the films have different restrictions, though the passage of time can be alluded to even there). Frodo physically stops aging at the moment he receives the Ring, (it's the Ring's power to do so) and so he would look at the time of the start of the journey just like he looked when the birthday party was so when he was 33 years old, (the hobbits 'coming-of-age' date) so one can handwave it in the films in any case the Hobbits age somewhat slower than Men, and live longer commonly reaching a 100 years old etc.

How the Witcher show could’ve been one of the best shows of all time and won so many awards and probably would’ve made Netflix mountains of money: Start the show from the very beginning of the books, maybe 2 seasons a book, then move onto the games timeline and the creative freedom can come into play when they have to make several choices that have to be made during the games. The choices that are made throughout the 3 games is on par with Dragon age so the writes could really get creative then. It seriously would’ve been one of the best shows ever. Oh yeah and Henry never would’ve left obviously

The first books are more short stories and I was actually surprised the first season stuck with the chopped up time line and all that. The best parts of the show so far has been the moments they stuck to the source material. The Striga episode, the ball episode with Ciris mother and the first episode in season 2 is my favorite episodes as they felt more true to the books. It is just frustrating that the ego of some people always have to get in the way, they would have had a gold mine if they just stuck as much to the source material as they could, because I believe most people would love that story as it was told.

Well yeah, the games after all happen AFTER the end of the books, so the games are unofficial sequels to books, while the netflix show was in theory supposed to be adaptation of books...but they couldn't even make a good and faithful adaptation so it basically became a fanfic of the netflix script writers who care more about diversity and other such agendas than the story and world of the Witcher haha :). The games are far more lore friendly and canon compliant that one can believe that books and games happen in the same continuity, the games happen few years after the last book The Lady of the Lake, while the netflix show so far hasn't even reached that stage and hell season 2 was supposed to be based on the Blood of Elves, but almost nothing remained and entirety of the storyline of that season was invented by showmakers, while season 3 is supposed to use the novel Time of Contempt as basis (and then season 4 supposedly will take Baptism of Fire, and if the show by some miracle survives the Tower of the Swallow and The Lady of the Lake but I now doubt that show will survive so long haha :))...unfortunately....Baptism of Fire was always my favorite book so I bet it will be ruined the most, the butterfly effect of all those changes and alterations the netflix arleady did to the story will make it all unrecognizeable in the end.

@@fantasywind3923 I think everyone here knows that the games take place after the books, hell, they retcon the fact that Geralt dies at the end of the books, lol. The only thing we said is that B&W is the perfect ending for Geralt's story. I haven't read the books, so watching the show hasn't been quite as painful for me as for many others. But if they screw it up to the point where Cavill just straight up leaves then I know something is very wrong. I had no idea the whole Baba Yaga thing wasn't in the books, since most of the stuff in The Witcher is inspired by Slavic folklore anyway, I just thought "ok, makes sense". The more I learn about the show's weak connection to the books, the less I wanna watch it. I was looking forward to watching the spinoff, but decided not to waste my time after seeing the reviews and learning that they basically pulled the whole thing out of a single sentence in a single book. I started watching the show to learn about what happens in the books but apparently that's out of the window, lol.

When it comes to season 1 I have to actually give the showrunners some credit. The first book have a very similar way of storytelling, as it is bunch of short stories that happened at different points in time and you have to sort of piece together when everything happens. I was actually very surprised they stuck with that for the series. And you don't get much explained in the first books either, but they do help when you start the true saga, as it sort of connects everything together the more you read. But they wen the exact opposite way when it comes to the second season. Besides the first episode which is also one of the short stories, they went completely off the rails and just had some minor points that was similar to the books. While I was still entertained, I can't deny that some thing pissed me off a lot.

I had zero complaints about the casting in general. Just mostly about the plot. Some of the absolute highlights besides Cavill were Vesemir, Calanthe and Jaskier. Even Mirelka and Renfri from the very first episode were solidly cast, solidy written, solidly acted, and just allaround solid supporting cast. While both seasons started out with strong first episodes, the issue is that the show itself completely left the rails. It's a shame, because they actually introduced canon plots that are poorly covered in the games. (Like Duni's backstory about incest & fate.) And I actually thought that the time taken in Cahir's unlikely alliance & exposition with Yennefer also worked well, even if it's not necessarily canon. But killing off main characters like Eskel and three quarters of the witchers just to advance a season? Fuck off. Especially because it's clear that they're just going to end up re-telling the plot from Witcher 3 with shit deviations. (Like the deathless mother instead of the crones of Crookback bog. They even had the perfect theme music and you could have shown tapestries instead of the crones.)

People saying Ciri is a Witcher didn't pay much attention. She was trained as Witcher by Geralt but didn't attempt the Trial of the Grasses to actually become one as it's said the female anatomy can't survive the mutations. The reason she's perhaps more powerful than Witchers is because she was also trained as a sorceress by Yennefer. On top of that she's the daughter of Emhyr var Emreis (emperor of Nilfgaard) and Pavetta (a Source, one born with a natural affinity for magical abilities). Lastly she is a descendant of Lara Dorren giving her the Elder Blood which gives her the ability to travel space and time, although not in a controlled manner. Netflix doesn't need to inject a random girl boss character, all they need to have a powerful female lead is not not screw up Ciri.

The Witcher books and games are very popular with lots of fans. I bet there are a lot of discussions and arguments among the fans on the internet talking about what they liked and what they didn't. All they had to do is to look through those to see what the fans expect from the series. Instead they decided to change pretty much everything the fans loved and expected.

They even made some major deviations in the Last of Us show, but I think most people were completely fine with it since it didn't undermine the original story. You could even argue that it enhanced it.

I mean it already started with the look of his swords and his amulet... the Amulet is a distinctive 3D Wolfshead Medaillon, with a metal circle around its middle, instead they went with a flat medaillon that just has a wolfs head printed on it... It looks like the comparison between the real thing and a Witchers Medaillon ordered from Wish... Its so incredibly infuriating because i have the Collectors Edition Wolfshead Medaillon from the Witcher games and i KNOW firsthand how it should look and they couldnt even do that right...

They dont respect the writing, they dont respect what fans want. They just want to create their own thing while using a beloved IP and they get mad when nobody wants to watch it. If you want to create your own thing, then make your own thing, stop subverting already existing things, just to make more money. I think more so that these people see something that is beloved, hate that thing and go about doing their best to destroy it, by infiltrating it, subverting it, taking it over and then it collapsing when everyone leaves.

Yeah i don't understand why they think that they can make a better version of the witcher by ignoring many things the fans loved about the witcher. Don't get me wrong there are things that can be changed to adapt to the format, but most of the time they just want to sell their own story people wouldn't be interested in if they wouldn't have used a big name like the witcher or lord of the rings.

I hate when they race swap, in some of these universes all types of people exist. Yet instead of taking risks and introducing new characters that make sense in the universe, they take the easy road and race swap main characters, but in doing that they also negate the person's identity because their identity doesn't affect their choices in any way which is just not how real life works. It does matter who and what people are, and they won't make the same choices or choices matter more BECAUSE of their identities. We see this all the time in history and literature, think one side helping the other because of ethical reasons even though they are in conflict. Netlix is just lazy, and they rather not think about making characters that are impactful.

When you're taking a book and making it into a movie, there are going to be changes. Things will need to be simplified or exaggerated a bit because we aren't told what the characters are thinking like in the book. Things will also likely need to be cut for the sake of time (LOTR is my favorite trilogy of all time, but each movie is 3+ hours and that's still after they cut out a lot from the books). But if you keep the essence of the story and stay true to the source material, you can make something incredible. Movies like LOTR and The Martian, even Harry Potter had good book to movie adaptations. But once you lift the time constraint by turning the adaptation into a series, you have the easiest job ever. You don't need to cut things for the sake of time (or you shouldn't have to if you are given enough episodes to work with, this is why early GoT was great but TLoU felt a bit weird with the distinct lack of infected after the first few episodes). You can lift the scenes from the book more or less 1:1 and have fun making it look as awesome as you'd like. As soon as you start throwing your own "narrative twist" onto a series, you've ruined it. This was the problem with The Witcher, The Hobbit, Rings of Power, the last season of GoT, etc.

"The series exist within it's own world" If it exist within it's own world why is it called The Witcher and the main characters are from the books and games. If you wanted to create your own story you could have created new characters and story in the Witcher world and not retcon existing characters. "exist within it's own world" is just an excuse people use because they don't want to admit they are actually talentless hacks.

The criticism of this kind are to some extent understandable, if the show focused more on Geralt in season 1 giving him proper time to show off and explore his personality it wouldn't feel like the show is moving the main character to the sidelines but unfortunately already in season 1 the show shifted focus to other characters more, while the season 1 was supposed to be based on the tomes of short stories focused on Geralt...The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny, some of the stories were butchered and much more attention was given to Yennefer, then obviously the choice of actors, Freya Alan character in the show for some lacks the spark of the book Ciri, she is more bland and so less easy to get into her story for the audience, the fans of the witcher books always will be disappointed with the further and further divorcing from source material to the point where season 2 which was supposed to be straightforward adaptation of Blood of Elves novel, turned out to be in 80/90 percent a netflix fanfic so...the Time of Contempt portion of story is also seriously damaged by the netflix creative choices, some of the plot elements they used in season 2 belonged to that book so there is no point in reusing them in season 3, so the elements of the book plot will inevitably be gone and replaced by yet another original writing ot the showrunner and her writer's room, which turns to be often crappy. Ciri is vital character for entire saga, but Geralt still is very much important protagonist...and now with the actor leaving and season 4 having Liam Hemsworth for it....well the story portion that would roughly correspond to Baptism of Fire,...which is probably one of the best books setting up the group of Geralt's helpers and friends, his 'hanza', characters that are often fan favorites...so I have a bad feeling about this :) overall.
