this is a good series getting inside of the corporate greed brain decisions with men who been in the biz. John coming from being a respectful of "its not great but can do better by the consumer" perspective, David coming from being a harbinger of "the have nots can fuck right off" perspective.

correct...i was interested to hear John Skipper, on an earlier episode, talk about the problem of American capitalism being uninterrupted focus on quarterly stock price. He's certainly right, it was just unexpected coming from someone deep in the game. But the perspective of age, and having worked in another time perhaps, was at least briefly a breath of fresh air.

David has never had to spend a second concerned about budgeting for cable or entertainment content. Yes he tracks it as part of monthly expenses and with current job can itemize them, but not worry if he can afford it

Love the media roundtable content. Very few even have the expertise to talk about his but I hope this is a monthly or quarterly thing if it can be. Skipper is great and David knows his stuff

Bobby Axelrod types who came from nothing and turned into cutthroats are appreciated over the David Samson types who were born with a silver spoon in his mouth and because his mom opened her legs to rich guys only.

Agreed. Samson is a pain in the ass, and it really stands out next to someone as great as Skipper and a fab host like PT. But... Samson does bring to the table how a certain powerful segment of the population thinks and operates. It is good perspective to understand, even if one doesn't agree entirely with it. I think David adds a lot to Meadowlark, even if he can rub us wrong a lot of the time. He also appears to be very willing to take a lot of the joking and heat others toss at him, which is a positive.

Skipper's comment about the matching was perfect and easy to understand. Samson was a jackass in trying to corner Skipper into saying WB is lying.

@@Alex-pd7tb Skipper was clear: 1. he didn't not believe the current ABC/ESPN had matching rights 2. he is puzzled by how TNT could have the right to match under the contract negotiated at the 2014 time 3. it is possible that when the assets were consolidated into WBD that they negotiated with the NBA for additional language to be added to the contract for matching Samson just ignores #3 as he wants to focus on #1 & #2... which is a very Samson thing to do in not listening to the entirety of what Skipper (or anyone else) is saying. Skipper is being reasonable as he almost always is: speaking on what he knows, while being open about what he's not sure about and what is possible. If you want to think WBD is lying to their shareholders, go for it.

Free lunch for sports fans is over in the US. And, it will bite the professional sports and the networks who carry them on the behind moving forward. What freely available sports allowed the populous to do is to pick and choose what they like, freely, and then develop a permanent affinity for the sports they like. That is a luxury no longer available to us and the upshot (actually the downside) of this is that most sports will not be developing the broad fan base they have now because access, due to paywalls, will be so restricted moving forward. If you don't see it, you'll never be a fan of it, and, certainly, not a paying fan of it. So, major league sports and networks, greedily enjoy the fans while you have them because the long term prognosis is that you won't have them very long moving forward.

Re: commercials; it seems the WNBA is filling commercial slots on an "as we go" basis. Result is sweet team-produced interstitials, wnba history spots, and some repetitive network promos. How long can the WNBA sustain its broadcast presence without more advertising deals?

You currently have to pay a regional sports network to watch your local MLB, NBA, NHL games.... that's why those leagues suck and don't make as much money or tv ratings as the NFL.

The reason soccer teams lose money is they prioritize winning over profits, plus it’s a totally different structure. Your New York Jets, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Charlotte Hornets type teams actually lose money when they lose big overseas.
