I feel like the main requirement for an adult show nowadays is for all the characters to be utterly unlikable. Seriously, who started this trend of having all the characters possess only negative traits and absolutely zero redeeming qualities? It was the same with paradise pd.

The basketball scene feels like it was made FOR jumpcuts. The fast paced montage feel makes it better, clearly showing that he's tried over and over, and the faster cuts show that better.

Being an adult show doesn’t mean that every joke has to be overtly sexual or rude, or completely disgusting, Netflix should take notes.

The "he can't get the basketball in" joke is actually made way funnier by your jump cuts since it actually has something resembling comedic timing

Big Bang Theory also has the advantage of "Sheldon's knock" being a character trait in addition to a running gag; it makes sense that he'd knock in exactly the same way every time, because it's the kind of robotic/autistic behavior he exhibits elsewhere. And as an extra bonus, *people knock on doors IRL.* It can be a running gag *without* needing to be varied or parodied all the time, because sometimes Sheldon just needs to knock on a door to move the "plot" along. They don't stop the show to have Sheldon knock on a door for no other reason than to do the "Sheldon knock". Instead the "sheldon knock" will be a 'background gag' to whatever other shenanigans are going on.

I refuse to believe this is actually intended to be watched by adults, I’m convinced the target audience is children/teens who think cursing/sex automatically makes it clever

So a good amount of this show is just Netflix yelling: "Sex" and telling you to laugh... Man, "Adult" comedy looks a lot more like 7th grade comedy.

Personally, I find that the art style lands somewhere in between Family Guy and Rick & Morty so my first assumption is that the show is written around flat, repetitive jokes that try way too hard to be both funny and edgy.

Just to add onto the mention of Archer using catch phrases well, one specific thing they do well is have a catch phrase that is unique to a particular episode. And rather than it being one character repeating it, it's instead a phrase that gets repeated several times (in different contexts). The most memorable one to me is "Do you want ants? Because this is how you get ants." one, and the different scenes/contexts all being reasonably relevant ones for a character to say that help sell it (and create this amusing idea of people being very concerned about ants in their day to day).

This sounds like an angry Italian man. Like, not trying to be funny angry, but like legit so angry he can't be charismatic voicing his anger.

Archer is a great example of an adult animated show that is aware of how exaggerated it is but what works for it is that it can pull of the comedy while still accomplishing the tropes of a pulp spy/action series, right down to the art style. Hoops....is just another show that at this point isn't riding off Family Guy but is trying to ride off the more 'edgier' Rick and Morty. I KNOW there are better animated shows on Netflix but holy fuck, they're not really fighting off that stigma of Netflix just being cable schlock 2.0 when shit like this gets more advertisement and chances to run longer than better shows. And I'm not turning my nose up on this type of humor but there is only so much of the same shit I can take.

Everyone is talking about the show, but I'm just thinking about how well he actually dissected and explained why a joke is good.

just while watching this I thought of a better way to do the "joke" of Hoops guy saying swears in front of kids. After the mom puts her hands over the kids ears he bats them out of the way saying "no, no, I'm learning some real good stuff here" and then later you could have him show up and say that same rude thing because he got pissed off or whatever. That's still not a great joke, but it would fit the tone of the show while actually being a joke, unlike Hooos guy just swearing in front of kids and that being it.
