My thoughts on the movie in general: The fact that so many people liked it and kind of overlooked the racist, sexist and misogynistic bullsh*t portrayed by some of the characters (including the male lead), and only focused on how 'cute' and 'romantic' the movie was. Shines a HUGE light on how people will see nothing wrong with a person's beliefs or mindset, because, you know "they're a likeable person. They don't really mean that in a racist/misogynistic way." I could have worded this better but movies like this aren't cute, they just normalize and romanticize problematic behaviour.

Purple hearts is a disturbing mix of racism, sexism, misogyny, anti-immigrant propaganda, and honestly, the list goes on. Minutes into the movie, I was already cringing. One of the marines made a statement about being good enough to fight for the ass of the protagonist (Cassie), but not being good enough to touch it. That was one of the most disgusting lines I have ever heard in a movie. That same character would later go on to chant "let's go kill some Arabs baby" or something along those lines. That someone could make such a blatantly racist statement is beyond me, more unsettling is the fact that the person who spewed such venom is a person of colour, who by the way, showed no remorse after being called out (by Cassie) for his infuriating comment. And then when the marines actually deployed in Iraq, we get a montage of the of them being nice to the local children. Seriously how do we reconcile the two?. And I have not even gotten into how toxic and hypocritical the main character, Luke is. I mean can you believe this guy actually told? no, commanded his wife to "sit down", when she called out his racist buddy, with no objection to the trash coming from his pal. He even justified it by saying it's just how they prepare themselves for what's coming. No one asked them to enlist in the army. Luke thinks himself to be the paragon of perfection and patriotism, a law abiding citizen, condemning Cassie for wanting to falsify a marriage to save her life, but saw nothing wrong with the whole thing when it could benefit him in paying off his threatening drug supplier. To crown it all, they went on and killed off the only character that was a breath of fresh air. Had I known, I wouldn't have wasted my time watching that movie.

This movie is hilarious for so many reasons 1. Military insurance sucks. My husband (the vet) can't even get braces in our city 2. They DO NOT need to go through all the fake crap with the relationship. After he was deployed no one would have said much about them not talking, especially with the timezone differences between anywhere in the US and the middle east. After he came back, however, is a different story. 3. Considering there's only so much he can spend his money on (soldiers have limited roaming in cities over there) he should have long been able to pay off the dealer 4. Ain't no way the bureaucratic hell hole that is the United States military got their marriage processed in time for him to be set up for separation pay and his raise

the only time I've seen "bigoted person meets girl and they fall in love" done well is JoJo rabbit. And that is because he was a literal child brainwashed by his society - and the girl he has a crush on helps him unlearn the ideology drilled into him because he's able to see her as a person who conflicts with what he's taught. His journey is about unlearning what he was taught and rejecting that idea so he can be a good person as opposed to the girl just saying she didn't care how he felt about her people and loving him as he was.

I find it so weird that these movies never seem to depict the reality of these relationships, which is that the liberal girl is usually otherwise privileged (white, straight, middle-class, etc), it's always a girl who is marginalized in multiple ways (a Black woman in Neo Ned, a diabetic in this movie).
