There's a mistranslation at 9:50. The composer is saying "The soundtrack is very archaic" but it's mistranslated with "The soundtrack is very heroic", which is quite a difference.

The movie was so absorbing. You felt you were there on No Mans Land. It was awful stomach and felt so realistic. Great perspective from director. It is absolutely terrifying. It is no wonder that war torn surviving soldiers suffered PTSD etc. Every soldier on all sides of the battle endured this terror. I had to avert my eyes at times as was so bloody, but this is the reality of war. This continues today. Extremely educational and made the viewer think that every soldier was simply fodder for the war effort. This war simply eradicated thousands of fathers, sons, uncles and nephews, etc. Same goes on today (2023) in Ukraine and Afghanistan to name but a few. Great direction, cinematography, production, setting and costumes, and the music was so eerie and cleverly scored. The actors immersed you in their roles in the war front. Just simply emotional and at the same time, so sad.

The movie follows a soldier. There is nothing special about the soldier except for the fact that this main character not only represents all German soldiers, but all soldiers that experience the horror of war. This movie was an absolute masterpiece.
@dynamo1796
@dynamo1796 Жыл бұрын
You make an excellent point here actually. Several war films (even where anti-war) make out the key protagonists as these greater characters - they are somehow empowered and emboldened by the story and we get the sense that they're a little bit untouchable by the events around them.1917 suffers this to some effect, Saving Private Ryan is very affected by this and in many ways some classics like A Bridge Too Far are also a little disconnected. All Quiet On The Western Front however is quite the opposite. The main character could be any of the other lads in his regiment, he represents them but is not made more powerful by it - he is just as frail and disposable as the others and (of course he is killed in the end). It does a great job of zooming into the life of one particular soldier, but does not elevate that soldier for it. When you zoom back out, you see hundreds of Pauls running, fighting and dying all across the field of battle. Its just so striking and unnerving in many ways, but this film is a true masterpiece and a piece of history for the ages.
@itslife1399

My paternal grandfather fought in WWI, either shell shock or an underlying psychiatric disorder he was catatonic in a VA hospital at the end of the war. His brother's had to search for him. He spent the rest of his life in and out of state mental hospitals. He died before I was born, but his parents and siblings immigrated from Bern Switzerland. He was very artistic, I have a wood carving and a couple paints he did and he hoped to study art. However his mother who seemed old world Swiss, made him drop out of school and work at age of 12. Watching that movie made me understand why and how he lost his mind in the trenches. When my dad went to war in WWll my grandfather was terrified my father would be killed. My grandmother and aunt kept a lot of news about my dad from him.

Unbelievable film. I don't believe there has been a film that depicts the horror of war like this one does. Of course Saving Private Ryan comes to mind, but this one let's you in closer to the terror the soldiers experienced, up close and personal. From the idealism of these young men as they enlist, to the disappointment, sadness, shock and horror they experienced once they realize what they have gotten into, and witnessing their fiends/comrades die in battle. It's an impressive piece of film making, a masterpiece for the ages. It is a shame it was not shown in theaters here in the US, unless it was and I missed it.

I appreciate the whole "your life means nothing/youre replaceable" kind of cycle in the film. In the beginning when the first soldier dies (i cannot remember his name at the him), the uniform is just taken along with many other uniforms that were salvagable from dead soldiers. When Paul gets his uniform he notices the little tag for the other soldier and the one who had accepted his paper and let him join simply ripped it off, just showing how little the soldiers were thought of. Then at the end, of the war and film, Pauls dogtag is just taken. It really just puts in perspective what the soldiers meant and how brutal it really was. I dont appreciate it in the way "yeah, cool i want it to occur" but rather I'm glad it shows the cruelty.

I want to see this movie so damn bad, but at the same time I don’t. I’ve heard such great things about it yet I can’t bring myself to ever watch it. I don’t think my perspective on the world will be the same after I watch it. Props to everyone who had the guts to actually watch it because I myself am struggling to even watch a few minutes.
