To me, the very strange thing is Nate finds comedy in the smallest most common things that could happen to a human being… And he turns them into gold. That is the brain of a genius who is also a comedian.

Yes, that's called by the experts "observational comedy", but the catch is not everyone is very good at it, and in order to flourish as an observational comic, you have to have your routine down tight and refined. Most of these "woken" young breed comedians suck at observational humor because they're spending most of their time on their phones and not analyzing the environment around them, hence all the woken comedian material stems from online news stories and arguments with strangers on social media. Nate is one of the last of a dying breed of true observational comics who doesn't need online influence or "wokeness" to make his shows a success.

Right! I never saw that coming. 😂. He can somehow take the simplest kind of nothing that would ordinarily not give any of us a second's worth of pause and effortlessly morph it into the funniest thing we've ever heard in our lives, and we find ourselves laughing so hard that our eyes burst forth a waterfall of tears, our belly muscles seize up & cramp to the point of pain, and (just like Grandpa's 1956 pickup) we end up sputtering, coughing and trying to draw in air!! 😂😂😂

When I turned 18, I wanted to be able to open a checking account, so I needed a social security number... As a home birth, I'd never been registered; all my Mom had was a signed affidavit that I'd been born, which is supposed to get turned in to the state to _get_ a birth certificate... Mind you, the state I grew up in, had never questioned it... but I had to send away to get a birth certificate, & then use that to apply for a social... at 18, as a US born resident... The SS office looked at me like I was an extraterrestrial. Got my number assigned & was told the card would arrive in the mail. It didn't. Resolution? Pay for a "replacement" & submit _photo ID._ ... Easier said than done! Eventually, I was able to get the state of Colorado to issue me a photo ID based on my SS _number,_ my birth certificate, & elementary school records no one had been required to keep (they even survived a move & a fire, which together wiped out more than half their records from those years over a decade before). So _I paid for the "replacement" SS card,_ & showed my shiny new ID, & triple checked my mailing address... All set... No card. Third time, I went in & told them my mailing address was their office. "No, we send it to your home." 'No, we tried that, _twice._ Mail it here, I'll come pick it up.' ... Three weeks later, I get the call: My Social Security card is at their office! (The person who called was _very_ puzzled by this.) I go to pick it up, & they say "No, we mail it to your home." I explain. They say that can't be right... I look at their windowed, formica-topped counter, & point _through_ it, at where an envelope rack _would theoretically sit._ Pointing down at some unseen row of papers I feel sure reside there, I said "I've already gotten the call that it's here. Could you please _check_ & see if there's an envelope addressed to me, under O - or possibly misfiled under S?" The lady looks down at the stuff in front of her, flips through some papers, pauses, flips through some more, _looks up at me pointedly,_ then says "I have to go check with my manager." They grab an envelope, walk away from the counter, & have a brief unheard conversation with a _lot_ of hand waving, which concluded with their supervisor throwing both hands in the air. They come back to the counter, & say "You know, we don't usually do this..." & hand me my Social Security card. The next week, we had a new postal carrier. Fun fact, Colorado has since changed their requirements, such that I would no longer be able to get that ID, with the documents available. It would literally be easier for me to get a _fake_ identity, than to replace the proof of my actual identity. Just a few generations ago, the ancestors of most US citizens immigrated to this country with little more than a _name_ (& sometimes even those were replaced with something the immigration officer could spell). Now, even for those who've been here our whole lives, it can be maddeningly hard to prove our identities! *_Fingerprints? DNA?_* Sure, those identify us with enough certainty to put us in prison for a crime, but they're not enough ID to open an account with; if we want to go to school or rent a stand-up scooter, we'd better have _our papers in order!_

I agree. I was talking about that to a friend this week. It’s actually a lot harder, and thus far more clever and ultimately funnier, to write jokes that aren’t mean or offensive. I think it’s because when the joke is mean, you don’t see yourself in it (no one thinks they are a bully and no one will admit they are the victim of a bully-or at least if they do, they won’t find it a joking matter). But when the joke isn’t cruel, when it lacks a bully or a victim, you can imagine the situation with you in it so it becomes funnier.

@kalevala29
@kalevala29 2 ай бұрын
I don't think that sarcasm is what he's going for. His humor is very self-deprecating and relatable. He might exaggerate sometimes, but I don't think he uses sarcasm to get laughs. I think one of the reasons he is so popular is that his humor is clean, and it has a southern charm to it. Daniel Tosh, David Cross, and even Kathleen Madigan are naturally sarcastic, to their advantage. I suppose the most sarcastic comedian would be Bill Murray, but he doesn't do stand up, I don't think.

I've never been a fan of "clean" comedy due to what I was exposed to growing up, but Nate is solid gold. He doesn't have some bullshit gimmick (like ripping his shirt off) to grab the audiences attention he just tells great stories and kills it.
