What babe?! Sing along to 'Dance Magic Dance' performed by Jareth the Goblin King (David Bowie) in the iconic 1986 classic, Labyrinth. Now streaming on Netflix UK/IE.
LYRICS:
You remind me of the babe, power of voodoo
You remind me of the babe
(What babe?)
The babe with the power
The power of voodoo
(Who do?)
You do
Remind me of the babe
I saw my baby
Crying hard as babe could cry
What could I do?
My baby's love had gone
And left my baby blue
Nobody knew
What kind of magic spell to use?
What kind of magic spell to use?
Thunder or lightning?
Then baby said
Dance magic, dance (dance magic, dance)
Dance magic, dance (dance magic, dance)
Put that baby's spell on me
Jump magic, jump (jump magic, jump)
Jump magic, jump (jump magic, jump)
Put that magic jump on me
Slap that baby, make him free
I saw my baby, trying hard as babe could try
What could I do?
My baby's fun had gone
And left my baby blue
Nobody knew
What kind of magic spell to use?
What kind of magic spell to use?
Thunder or lightning?
Then baby said:
Dance magic, dance (dance magic, dance)
Dance magic, dance (dance magic, dance)
Put that baby's spell on me
Jump magic, jump (jump magic, jump)
Jump magic, jump (jump magic, jump)
Put that magic jump on me
Slap that baby, make him free
Dance magic, dance (dance magic, dance)
Dance magic, dance (dance magic, dance)
Dance magic, dance (dance magic, dance)
Dance magic
Jump magic, jump (jump magic, jump)
Jump magic, jump (jump magic, jump)
Put that magic spell on me
Jump, slap that baby
Slap that baby
Power of voodoo
Power of voodoo
Dance magic dance
Dance magic
Dance magic
Ooh, ooh, ooh
Dance magic
What kind of magic spell to use?
Thunder or lightning?
Sure to frighten
Dance magic dance
Dance magic dance
Put that magic spell on me
Jump magic jump
Jump magic jump
Put that magic jump on me
Slap that baby (aha) slap that, slap that baby
Make it free
Dance magic, dance (dance magic, dance)
Dance magic, dance (dance magic, dance)
Dance magic, dance (dance magic, dance)
Dance magic, dance (dance magic, dance)
Jump magic, jump (jump magic, jump)
Jump magic, jump (jump magic, jump)
Put that magic jump on me
Slap that baby, make him free
Jump magic, jump (jump magic, jump)
Jump magic, jump (jump magic, jump)
Put that magic jump on me
Slap that baby, make him free
Dance magic, dance (dance magic, dance)
Dance magic, dance (dance magic, dance)
Dance magic, dance (dance magic, dance)
Dance magic, dance (put that)

Wanting to turn the baby into a goblin aside but why isn't anyone acknowledging how good he is with the baby?! He carries him, pays attention to him, puts on this show just to stop him from crying and on top of that, the baby actually seems happy with him. In short, he's probably a better babysitter than most average adults.

@@privaternutzer7595 you know, they aren't actually blaring the music here, it's pre-recorded most of the sound in the room would have been the 50+ puppeteers behind the scene moving around, which didn't sound so loud in the making of doc, they wanted to get shots of him crying and audio of hum babbling but he kept giggling at the puppets, the baby sounds on this track are mostly David bowie mimicking them and uhh, you know they didn't get a goblin to shoot a pea at the chicken, they just tipped the platform it was on slightly so it would look startled, even back then you couldn't just abuse chickens also, I wouldn't normally point this out, but they aren't actually going to turn him into a goblin either

Well, the character of Jareth isn't evil as such - he just has his own agenda. The novelization is interesting as it expands on his character a bit - he really does love Sarah and wants her to stay with him, he is genuinely fond of baby Toby, and he is tired of being Goblin King. That's part of the reason why his character is so intriguing - he isn't just a straight up 'baddie' but has some redeeming traits as well. Plus, if you watch the 'making of,' David had an absolute blast playing this role - he was having the time of his life and I think that shows through.

I was fortunate to enough to meet Toby and his parents, Brian and Wendy Froud, a number of years ago. At 12, Toby was already a talented artist and one of the sweetest kids I've ever met. Brian was a bit shy and ended up wandering off, but I had the pleasure of talking about art doll and puppet-making with Wendy and Toby for well over an hour. She gave me so many tips on how to take my own work to the next level, and was just such a warm, lovely person.

@@jcw8719 I know. Still no idea why. It's a good movie. Little weird but that's part of it's charm. I thing it mainly flopped because it was released on a bad month with too much competition. it "flopped" because it's not the kind of movie you see in the theatre with your parents. It's a rainy day / sick day by yourself kind of movie. What I do laughably remember when it was out, was the critics brutally attacking David as a bad actor...and yet here we are 25 years later still watching the movie and getting emotional when he sings Within You. The critics are gone, but David's performance lives on with us.

One of my favourite wholesome bits of trivia is that the actor playing the baby, Toby Froud, was the son of modelmaker and puppet designer Brian Froud, and Toby grew up to become a modelmaker and puppet designer/puppeteer himself. He worked on movies including Kubo and the Two Strings and the Guillermo del Toro stop-motion Pinocchio movie.
