Yes, I remember the launching of the sweeper system! We were shite in the competition up until this game & I recall how it worried me & my mates us suddenly deploying a more continental sweeper system approach! But it seemed to work. The ref had his hand up, indicating it was an indirect freekick. If it had had a touch of anyone, including the keeper, it would have been a goal. But since it went directly into the net, it was disallowed.

I don't know why those goals didn't stand. Both goals seemed good.

Well,it had nothing to do with being offside or not.In the first case there is (perhaps accidental) handball by Lineker during the "rebound".The second goal was disqualified because it had been an indirect free-kick but the ball went straight in the net with noone else having touched it as it should have been for the goal to be legal.

@@aekangelo I figured the same thing for the first goal. Obviously it should have stood since the handball was accidental. It makes sense for the second goal in that case not to have stood.

@@aekangelo I liked the way handball rules were before. But many newcomers apparently didn't understand them and it became a big deal, so they had the rules changed to suit them. It's ridiculous that nowadays you get called for handballs if you can't do anything about it.

Brazil can did that because the gap between them and the other teams was massive. 86, wow, it was something else. But it's because of Maradona. It's interesting that 74 wasn't that bad for me. Not great, but still better than 78 for me. But, if we talk about the quality of football system, skills, techniques, 2000-2014 is the peak of football. Marco van Basten was my childhood hero. I love Capello's Milan, Cruyff's Barcelona, and the treble winner Man United. Yet, we've seen the best of football in 2000-2014.
