Some interesting facts: Joost Klein is maybe more popular in Germany and Belgium then in the Netherlands itself. He even had a number 1 hit in Germany with Friesenjung. The list of people who are in the video: In the dinner scene you can see: Rene Froger (De Toppers - ESC 2009) S10 (ESC 2022), Donnie (Dutch rapartist, cowrote the song) and Emma Wortelboer (tv presenter, gave the televote points in 2019). On the tv is Tim Haars with a typical New Kids line. New Kids was a tvshow in the Netherlands and Germany, following a group lowbeat hangyouth, with a huge cult following. In the car at the end the one and only DJ Paul Elstak. He remixed the song at the end. He is one of the early adopters of the 90s happy hardcore/rave sound. A wave which was massive in the Netherlands.

As said before: Little bit of background on Joost. He was creative from a very young age and also a bit different. His father said that there are no boundaries and he should follow his dreams. They always watched the Eurovision Songfestival together so as a kid he replied that his dream would be to go to the Eurovision Songfestival. Then his dad passed away when he was 12 and his mother when he was 13. For inspiration and acceptance of the loss of his parents he travelled trough Europe. Therefore he sings that the pain and emptiness stayed with him no matter where he went. He paid for mental help but it did not work for him. Still he managed to be a very positive and joyful person as reflected in this song. He sings about the song Papaoutai from Stromae that is also about missing his father. In all of this he managed to combine lot's of cultural aspects of different European countries and the Netherlands. Without the layer of his personal life you will notice that a lot of elements can directly be related to the European countries. The young boy and the old man represent him and his father struggling trough life and his father being an example for him. The final emotional scene represents him as a kid and his father when it all ended, the burning of the family photo and the building represents that you need to move on in life and not get stuck in the past. In the end he tells that he listened to his father (there are no borders for your dreams) and refers to him going to the Eurovision Songfestival. So winning would be optional, his goal was participation.

The last part is about his dad, who he lost to cancer at a young age. Shortly after he also lost his mother, that explains the end. He told his dad that one day he would be singing at the Eurovision, now he finally made it. It represents a full circle, he loves his parents really much, but he needs to leave the pain and the hurt in the past so he can open a new chapter in his life, hence why the picture is burning.

This is fabulous, I gave up on the UVSC 3 years ago but Joost makes me want to watch it again. This work of art has it all, it makes you laugh, it makes you wanna move to the groove, and it is a great message, so many typical Dutch referrals / hidden gems, it gives me Chickenskin (Goosebumps) and it made me cry. There is a deeper layer in this song (consider his parents died young, and he is singing about being able to visit anyone without needing a visum.... pretty hardcore), but in the end it IS a tribute to Europe and his parents. You have to understand the deeper meaning of this song. Joost and his dad used to watch Eurovision together. Sadly his dad passed away at the age of 12. He states 'I am running from myself, calling all the the time for help. I give people money but no one wants to help me.' Not so funny now is it? The reference to Stromae's Papaouatai is about a boy who loses his father at a young age and missing him. So funny tunes, extremely Dutch culture, much deeper meaning. Going up 14 places at the odds means something. It's the first time the Netherlands are so enthusiastic about their entry. I'm really surprised. In a way this is a 'nationalistic' song because there are so many little references only people from the Netherlands, Flanders and parts of Germany will understand. Maybe that's why we love it? I think this is a tribute to ESC. The people in the video are absolutely devoted to the festival. Let's not forget this. Remember the hysterical lady in pink announcing the results of the Dutch jury? She's in there. S10 also had this dream of participating. I just hope this will not be seen as a joke entry because it's not. But maybe that's my personal story. My father died 6 years ago and at this stage, you're becoming more grateful. He didn't speak any foreign languages but he was always able to communicate with people. Just by being interested. He did travel within Europe (Germany, Belgium, France, Greece and Spain) and he loved it. Going back to the song: I do not like happy hardcore but this song has many layers. The song could not be in English without missing an important aspect, because in Dutch papa means father. Eurofather does not work. Joost used the Dutch word Europa cleverly, and extend it to Europapa, as a vehicle to use the word papa over and over again (I guess papa has never been used so many times in any song) to honour his father. Someone who lost his parent at such a young age must be stuck in time for some time until he recovers from such a trauma. You hitting the nail on its head when you say that papa means father. Joost's father's lesson was to broaden his view beyond the borders of the Netherlands because borders a just a concept invented by humans. The start of the song and the passport thing refers to that. Now he crossed the boundaries of the Netherlands like his father told him to do by his entry to the Eurovision contest and thus leaving the 12 year old boy inside him behind (represented by the last shot of the burning house where he stood in front of his "father and his 12 year old self"). Let's hope he can now finally move on now he virtually burned his traumatic past.
