The entire song (while sounding happy) actually has a depressive undertone, relating to the fact that people with severe depression might act very happy to put on a mask. The house represents Joost's childhood, which was basically ruined when his father died of cancer while Joost was only twelve, and lost his mom a year later due to a heart attack. With the fire in the end he wanted to symbolize the end of his 14 years long grieving period. When he sings lines like "I lost everything, except for time", "I'm in Germany but I'm so alone, even when I'm in Italy I still feel the pain" underscoring the fact that since the death of his parents he's felt deep pain and lonelyness no matter where he goes. And the bit that says "I'm running from myself, all day long I call for help, I even give people money but there's nobody who really helps me", highlighting his battles with his depressions, PTSD and eating disorder, and that even doctors (the people he pays) can't really help him. So yeah, it's actually a very sad song in a very happy shell. Like Joost himself is very sad but puts up this happy mask for the world. And all this as a hyme to his parents, packed in a song that represents the unification of Europe, and the importance of it, especially now with the big red angry giant from the east lurking over us Western Europeans. It's not a great song, it's a masterpiece.

This song has a deeper meaning. 'Papa' is translated as 'dad' in dutch. Joost lost his dad to cancer when he was 12 and his mom a year later because of a cardiac arrest. He sings that no matter where he goes or what he eats, he can not escape the pain of this loss. In the end he says goodbye to the pain of his loss by burning the photo, without losing the memory. This song is also an ode to Europe. His dad told him that there are no borders, because they are invented by humans. And that you can create your own world. The dance break is happy hardcore - a music style that was invented in the Netherlands, also called gabber music.

@@TheMuserResolute Additionally: Joost used to watch EUROVISION with his parents every year, and their dream for him was to participate one day. That is why in the end, he dedicates this to his parents, under the words "I miss you every day, I secretly whisper to myself. But see Dad, I did listen to you."

Why I think Europapa is a masterpiece? Knowing his background stories (lost both parents at a very young age, got depressed and dedicated this song to his father) and being a Dutch native speaker myself, I thought, why not translate Europapa, explaining the deeper meaning of the song (its my personal take on the song and not verified of course (only Joost knows) but I think it makes a lot of sense. Have a read: --> Welkom in Europa, blijf hier tot ik dood ga (Welcome in Europe, I'll stay here till I die) Welcome in a world without borders, without constraints. I will never let myself be constricted. --> Euro-pa-pa, Euro-pa-pa (Euro-dad-dy, Euro-dad-dy) --> Bezoek m'n friends in France (I visit my friends in France) 'Friends' translated in France is 'Amis' Amis was author of e.g. 'Invasion of the Space Invaders' and 'Money'. Joost didn't visited friends in a country, he identified himself with characters in books. --> Of neem de benen naar Wenen. (or take a walk to Vienna) In Dutch 'de benen nemen' has two meanings. Litterary is means 'to walk', but figuratively it means 'running away' Same counts for 'Wenen'. Translated to English can mean 'the capital of Austria 'Vienna' but can also be translated to 'crying'. So, it can mean 'walk to Vienna' or 'running away to despair' --> Ik wil weg uit Netherlands, maar m'n paspoort is verdwenen (I want to leave the Netherlands, but my passport is gone) I want to run away from my childhood, run away from my pain, but I lost my identity. I don't know who I am anymore, I'm lost. --> Heb gelukkig geen visum nodig om bij je te zijn (I don't need a visa to be with you) There's is nothing what can stop me to be with you, you are in my heart. --> Dus neem de bus naar Polen (So I take the bus to Poland) Besides transportation, a bus is also a conductor. Polen, in Dutch, is the plural of pool. In English poles. So magnetism. With a balance of positive and negative ends. --> of de trein naar Berlijn (or the train to Berlin) First; the Berlin Wall was the symbol of the Cold War and a divided Europe. The fall of the Berlin Wall symbolizes the start of a united Europe. Second; the track 'Friesenjung' of Joost Klein is co-written by his friend, the Berlin rapper Ski Aggu. --> Ik heb geen geld voor Paris, dus gebruik m'n fantasie (I don't have money for Paris, so I use my imagination) Paris is the city of love. But there's no currency in the world that can buy his father back. He only can use his imagination to be reunited with his father --> Heb je een еuro'tje, please? Zеg "merci" en "alsjeblieft" (can you spare a euro, please? Say "merci" en "here you are") Can I have a bit of your wealth, please? In return I will share a bit of my love with you. --> Ik ben echt alles kwijt behalve de tijd (I lost everything, except the time) I lost everything what's important to me (his parents) the only thing that remains is the time he has left in his life, without his father a burden. --> Dus ben elke dag op reis want de wereld is van mij (So I'm travelling every day because the world is mine) He's running, searching, trying to find something. Every day over and over and again in a world where he feels lonely. --> Ich bin in Deutschland, aber ich bin so allein (I'm in Germany, but I'm so alone) The track 'Friesenjung' was a huge hit in Germany. He made it in Germany, but he can't share his successes with the one who is most inportant to him. --> Io sono in Italia, maar toch doet het pijn (I'm in Italy, but it hurts) In his track 'Ome Robert' Joost sings (well actually screams), 'Who are you? I'm a god!'. But even the gods of the Roman empire are not enough to soothen the pain. --> Ben aan het vluchten van mezelf, roep de hele dag om help (I'm running away from myself, call for help the whole day) I don't want to be the person as I am today, don't want to feel the pain anymore. But I can't do this on my own. I need help. Perhaps he asks his dad for help but realizes he is on his own. --> Ja, ik geef zelfs mensen geld, maar d'r is niemand die me helpt (Yes, I even give money to people and organizations, but there's nobody who helps) I need help and I'm willing to share everything I have, but nobody understands my pain, not even the organizations who should have taken care of me. I feel alone and lonely. --> Ik hoef geen escargots, hoef geen fish 'n' chips Hoef geen paella, no, ik weet niet eens echt wat dat is (I don't need escargots, don't need fish 'n' chips. Don't need paella, no, I'm not even sure what it is) I'm not interested in luxury, not interested in traditions, not interested in exotic places. --> Zet de radio aan, ik hoor Stromae met "Papaoutai" (turn on the radio, I hear Stromae with "Papaoutai") I tune in and hear someone in a similiar situation (Stromae lost his father as well) echoing my thoughts ('Papaoutai' means 'Daddy, where are you?') --> Zal niet stoppen, tot ze zeggen: "Ja, ja, dat doet 'ie goed, ey" (Will not stop until they say: "yeah, yeah, he doing a great job, ey") I'm a insecure and will not stop until I got the confirmation that I'm on the right track. That I'm doing a good job. A tab on the shoulder will do. ------------------------------------ And there you have it. Europapa is a masterpiece....

They do it live through the voice being sampled. Technically if a voice is passed through a vocoder and then sampled it counts as an ‘instrument’ so doesn’t break the ‘no main vocals as backing vocals’ rule. It is a bit naughty seen as it’s the main hook of the song and it’s almost never Joost’s live vocal - but the rules allow it. No one has ever so explicitly tested this rule before though (mostly because this is a very unusual genre for Eurovision), so depending on how well it does you might see some stricter rules come in next year regarding sampling voices.

Seeing this reaction as an autistic person who usually struggles with the point of connection, is heattwarming. Due to how my life has formed, im very much connected with people from different cultures and backgrounds across the world. Including music. I didnt understand the language and so most of the lyrics, but i could make out most of it. I was very conflicted between this one and Nemo. Cause as you realise to the end. This is a song that comes from his heart. He loves this continent and just wants people to get along. He made a promise to his parents, and he will keep trying till his dying breath. Ps. Also why theres not a more beautiful choice than a gabber bridge, i lost it there. There isnt a more iconic thing for Netherland culture. That is as if you brought Joddel during a swiss bridge

Joost Klein dedicated this song to his father, who died when he was 12 years old due to cancer. His dad taught him that the world has no actual boundaries. His mother died a year later, when he was 13, due to cardiac arrest. Before his dad passed, Joost was already writing all kinds of stuff and promised one day he was going to go to Eurovision. He has gone through so many challenges in life, and it is a true inspiration to see how he deals with them.

If you search the personal history of Joost and then put this song and video together, with his story, you will find and understand all the layers: - both his parents died in the '90's ( the age of the hardcore etc) - he was just a child when that happened ( in an interview about this song and clip he told to never want to loose his inner child, that makes it funny, maybe weird for a lot) - his father said the world is without boundaries, but people create boundaries, so you can create the world - when he was young, every year he watched the eurovision song festival with his parents and shared his dream with his parents. Which was to also wanted to be there on stage, performing and representing the Netherlands - still every where he goes ( in Europe) it doesn't take away the loss and pain - the sudden end: from happy hardcore, dancing, smiling, hard!! To....a really abrupt silence, burning his fundament, his family, his house, his home and where he comes from....i think this represents how it was for him to suddenly loose his father...and a year later his mother...from partying and no worries at all....to : wtf...what is happening...a total silence...disbelief and destruction

Thank you for your reaction! I'm already a subscriber because of your reactions to Nightwish 🤘🏼 You'll not be so confused if you watch again with the English subtitles. And maybe you'd like to react to the live version in Stockholm, the Nordic European party a week ago. In this performance Joost is very clear the song is for his parents. If you find the whole performance with the Remix at the end, you might get more confused. That's serious hardcore 😅 You're a reactor focussed on sound, not lyrics. Happy hardcore is sounding happy but the lyrics mostly are sad or silly, mocking every day life. It's typical Dutch, acting silly, laughing your *ss off, "dancing away the heartache" on happy hardcore while inside you're sad or disappointed with a pointless life. And well, I actually think a lot of other Europeans can relate to that 🫶🏼

And now in 2024 a Dutch musician that makes music from his actual orignal native Dutch heritage ... sounds ... according to most youtubers ... like Scooter :) Wow!!!! As happy as this song sounds, it's a sad song. Actually, he describes his life in a few minutes; In the first verse, he talks about losing everything. An important part is the death of his parents when he was 12/13 years old. In the second verse, he talks about how alone and lonely he is. He also says that he needed help because of depression and being homeless and apparently insufficiently helped I don't understand the reference to stromai (bad in french). The leonardi da vinci (The Last Supper) scene may refer to one of his songs in which he sings that he is god. If I remember correctly, his father once told him that he should keep writing poetry. The house with the mill is the place in which he grew up (with all the shit) and possibly burning it down, taking a new step into a new world without borders in which he can do whatever he wants

Dutch is here. So I’m not a fan of this song just because I don’t like the genre and also not too happy with the lyrics. However I’m really glad about the fact that he uses a genre more specific to the Netherlands, alongside a lot of other countries. I also like the fact that hes singing Dutch, this felt more like a real competition between countries, rather than artists. Other than that, I’ve watched all your reviews, loved it a lot! I feel like there is somewhat of a "rejection of globalism/Americanism" going on in Europe at the moment. Especially with the Ukraine and Russia war, and the refugee crisis. On top of the music industry being absolutely sucked dry and being original becoming harder and harder, people are returning to national roots to look for inspiration.

I am amazed (and sad) how the all-ruining autotune and similar post- overproduction techniques have become the 'industry-norm' to such an extent, that even musicians like you mistake a sampled voice that clearly visibly is played back with a keyboard-like device for autotune. (ironically while producing piano tones yourself through a keyboard using basically the same sample-based technology).

0:10 Your right and wrong about this. The Netherlands 🇳🇱 odds last few years: 2024 Joost Klein, Europapa, odds dropped from 14% to 6% since rehearsals. 2023 Mia Nicolai and Dion Cooper, Burning Daylight (did not qualify for final) 2022 S10, De Diepte, 1% (11th place) 2021 Jeangu Macrooy, Birth of a New Age,

Scooter, nope... His producers stole all of his stuff from the Scottish act: *ULTRA SONIC* just listen to annihilating rhythm, and hear all of the 'scooter' yells and melodies... They just stole it y'all!

In one of the many interviews he gave, he was referring to Scooter, so that is a miss from your side. He also told it was a throwback of the 90s. When you analyze music you will find out that all present day music is 'stolen' as all chords have been played before. So even your Ultra-Sonic most likely lend what they played from somewhere else. It is just that the compositions differ that make it a different song. There is a series on KZfaq of a dutch DJ, Bart Arens that analyses songs (especially synthesizer) and shows where sections came from and where they were used. For the hard-core section Joost asked the help of DJ Paul Elstak (the guy in the car) to throw his gabber sauce over it. So stolen, certainly not, borrowed... left and right... most likely.

I'm sorry. I listen to the song you mentioned, but im hearing Scooter, mental theo & charlie lownoise and Paul Elstak. But i do agree with you that it is 90's based

@@JohnZonneveld I'm only talking about Scooter. Joost- is cool, and makes everything his own. The act/producers. Yes everyone gets inspired by other artists. The scooter producers took it literally, months before the Scooter act ever came out with that exact sound! Ultra sonic made these sounds and yells. (Did you listen to that song, you'll hear.) Everyone else was inspired after it. Ultra sonic was around since 1991, but didn't start with records till later, as they were a small, local Scottish act. Inspiration from other artists is one thing, literally copy pasting is theft!
