Schottland hat bei Turnieren immer extrem viel Pech gehabt. Bei der WM 1974 blieben sie zum Beispiel als einziges der 16 Teams im Turnier ungeschlagen und schieden trotzdem nach der Vorrunde aus, aufgrund der schlechteren Tordifferenz. Mal sehen wie es bei der EM 2024 in der Gruppe mit Deutschland wird. 😉

Scotland should advance at the expense of Netherlands if H2H result was used instead of goal difference as the preferred tie breaker, as is adopted nowadays. Same situation in 1974: Scotland scored more goals than Brazil in the 3-way tie league between Scotland, Yugoslavia and Brazil.

Ganz abgesehen, dass sich die meisten hier über ein Weiterkommen Schottlands gerade gegen die Niederlande gefreut hätten, ist es einfach schade, dass die klasse Leistung der Schotten so nicht den verdienten Erfolg gehabt hat. Es bleibt immerhin ein unvergessliches Tor von Gemmill und der Treffer von Dalglish war ebenfalls sehenswert vollstreckt.

You say anything, the Dutch had no certainty of qualifying either as first or second, they could not afford to make calculations. Because if the referee had not refused 2 goals to Scotland, Holland would have been eliminated due to a better goal difference in favor of Scotland. Holland lost because Scotland was better and Dutch were saved by the referee from a wider defeat that would have eliminated them. That's all.

@@abelbolbo4339 Holland deliberately took it easy and didn't mind losing by the odd goal because they wanted to avoid Argentina in the next round. As soon as Scotland got a two goal advantage the Dutch went straight down the other end and scored. They did what Denmark should have done in 1986 against West Germany.

Same with the defender falling down and relying on the ref giving a really soft free-kick to chop off another goal. I think McLeod played him because he had been a regular for a couple of years and he felt that as the defence was used to him it would be better keeping the understanding built up, rather than starting from scratch with a new keeper. Mario Zagalo of Brazil did a similar thing with Felix in 1970.

Frank McLintock the captain of the Arsenal team which won the double , should have won many more caps. Jim McCalliog should have won many more caps. He made his debut for Scotland vs England at Wembley in 1967 when Scotland won 3 -2 , the first team to beat England after the 1966 World Cup. Many Scottish supporters thought McCalliog was the best Scottish player on the day. McCalliog won the FA Cup with Southampton in 1976. For the 1978 World Cup , Jim Blyth of Coventry should have been the first choice keeper. Andy Gray should have been first choice . Anglos who were neglected. Nevin and Speedie were neglected anglos in the 1986 World Cup when Scotland never won a single game. Speedie helped Scotland qualify , Stein died, then Speedie was not even in the squad. . Why was Dave Mackay never manager of Scotland ? Or George Graham ? Anglos ....
