I am writing from Denmark, but we have kept some nettles in our garden and the last two years have gotten at least 60 small tortoise shell butterflies nesting and growing on them. I've seen admirals rest on them, but not lay eggs, and have yet to find a peacock or comma... but will keep watching!! I do think it's very important to preserve these lovely pollinators.

Thanks Daniel, where I am working at the moment the client leaves swathes of them and this is where this video was filmed, it's a little early for these caterpillars right now but next time I come across some I'll do a longer video - thanks for the support and encouragement on this, such an ignored species that is a vital habitat for so much. Best wishes, Joel

I have the book 'Foodplant list for the caterpillars of Britain's Butterflies and larger Moths' (Atropos publishing) and it lists 35 species that feed on nettles. 5 are Butterflies (Painted lady) and 30 Moths. Not to mention smaller Moths and other groups will eat nettles, Nettle weevil most commonly.

Absolutely Joe - way too many to list in the short video and of course I make these when the opportunity arises, so no chance of a script ;) But I really do appreciate your input here, it's very valuable and reiterates the need for this species (and many others) - I was reading a little while ago about the decline in the Tansy Beetle and that it needs this plant alone to survive - although they can fly, they for some reason choose not to (!) so it has meant a huge decline with them having to literally walk miles when one Tansy plant has been utilised and they have to find another. Thanks so much Joe - best wishes, Joel

We've always had nettles along the back of the driveway and in the corner of the garden, and yet we have never seen any caterpillars. It's interesting, and disconcerting, that others haven't found any Peacock caterpillars on their nettles either🙁 I have seen one or two adults pass through the garden, but I think that maybe they give our garden a miss for the most part due to how many birds visit. I was, however, speechless at how many you found this garden🤩 I'm so glad they're still around, and in quite big clusters by the looks of it👌🏽🥳💚💙

Hello again :) Apologies for the delay, I have found that a small nettle patch can *sometimes* attract the peacock but they do prefer larger clumps/areas of nettles as of course it gives the caterpillars more chance of food so I think this can be a determining factor. Don't give up hope yet, one day... one day... - you're certainly doing all the right things and the rewards for your efforts will be in many forms :) Best wishes, as always - Joel

Joel thanks for the vlog. I have a patch where I let nettles grow. I snip off the tops and put in my water butts along with Dandelions to make a garden soup for my plants. I've not seen any caterpillars on them. But after watching this I'm going to leave the nettles. The Peacock Butterfly is my favourite and I didn't know it lays it's eggs on the nettles.

Those Peacock caterpillars look like stars in the sky!! And they turn into such beautiful butterflies!!!! And the small Tortoise butterflies are pretty, too!! (When I watch your videos, I always have google open so I can look things up!!) What a GREAT description! Also, re the Bohemeria cylindrical, I think you could be right! Apparently loved by Red Admiral and Comma butterflies, and no doubt a host of others where you are. I haven't come across this species of nettle before but I am going to look into this further - Comma butterflies were big users of Hop before and then had to adapt to using stinging nettles (they feel pretty similar, ie rough stemmed like the hop) - thanks ever so much for this. I hope you are doing fine :) Best wishes, as always - Joel (sorry again for delays in responses, I think a lot of my comments weren't published for some reason so I am just going over them all again, in case!)

A fantastic sight! All too rare now, not only due to over zealous councils cutting down Stinging Nettles, but also some "unknown" factor which has seriously reduced numbers, parasitic wasps are one factor, I well remember collecting many hundreds of Peacock larvae every year from a local river bank which the River Authority cut each year just as the larvae were about to pupate, of the hundreds of larvae fully 80% were parasitized and failed to emerge to be released, as for the Small Tortoiseshell, you are very fortunate to have larval nests, I have not seen a Tortoiseshell for 3 years now. The crop of Ragwort you have could be a huge problem for any livestock owner, it will kill livestock as an accumulative poison! Many thanks for posing this one Joel! Chris B.

Great stuff, thanks for posting. Nettles can also people food. Pinch out the young tops (wear gloves unless you like pain) and pick from above the 'dog line' if foraging. By just pinching the tops, you cause the palnt to branch, leaving plenty for the wildlife and 'cut-and-come-again' veg for you. Soak briefly in lightly salted water and rinse then steam or lightly fry in a little butter as a vegetable or use in soups. Nettle and potato can be quite good, but others with more ingredients are better. Cooking denatures the 'sting'. Full of nutrients, they taste better than spinach (less leathery). I 'trialled' them as a food extensively the spring I went self-employed as things got a wee bit tight on the money front. Am still okay...... matter of opinion, maybe. Latin is Urtica dioica and that gave the name to a medical condition, urticaria. This is a skin condition characterised by raised whitish or pinkish raised patches which itch or burn. When retted, the old stems can provide a fibre which can be used to make cordage or woven. Not tried this as things never got that tight.....

Haha - no problem :) I've heard of the book and it would make a great companion to mine, lots of scientific evidence - although I'm sticking to my guns about a nettle patch (or even in pots) or hops if nettles really are too difficult to handle - the Red Admiral, Peacock and Comma rely on these for their young to eat and the Comma in particular had to "adjust" to nettles with a distinct lack of hop availability over the years - it's not all about flowers :) Best wishes - Joel

Hey Danny - do you mean the plants that look similar, like the red dead-nettle and white dead-nettle? If so they're actually related to the mint plant family (not sure why they're named similarly but probably due to the flowers) - the butterflies won't use these as host plants as they do with stinging nettles but the dead-nettle species can provide a lot of nectar for bees and the Garden Tiger and Angle Shades moths do use them as a larval food plant. So the Red Admiral and Small Tortoiseshell won't lay on the dead-nettle but they will on the stinging nettles - hope this helps :) Best wishes, Joel

@@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton I can't find on google if we have peacock butterfly here. Seems to be only there. Have never seen any insects on the nettles here, but if we cut them and the wilt, the sting goes away and the sheep love it

@@MrDaggerstone Hi Tim - sorry again for the delay, busiest time of the year at the moment so just trying to catch up with everyone over a quick lunch-break. Do check out Butterfly Conservation and look into this further, when raising butterflies it's really important that they have the right food source, not only for them but for their larvae too, particularly when released - this is what keeps colonies "static" and in one area normally, a lack of further plants further afield etc. Best wishes - Joel :)
