These are the finale steps in installing the new network cabinet in the Off-Grid Garage. Most of the cabling is done and we can finally connect the cabinet to the DC-DC converter in the battery shelf. The first lights are flickering in the cabinet, it looks good. While tightening some nuts on the fuse block, I could feel something weird though. Of course, this happens AFTER everything is connected inside the cabinet...

Nice job ... are those magnets for the tools from old hard drives? I assume you are using Cat 6 or 5e? And maybe a buss bar for the Orion output?
@OffGridGarageAustralia

Yeah, all hard drive magnets. I've got tons of them. That's all Cat5e what I'm using for the network. Both fuse blocks are directly connected to the output of the Orion, no real bus bar though, just two 4mm2 cables.

Andy have you looked at ESP_Link a low cost way of creating serial to wifi links where you need no wires I have set it up with the Daly BMS and the power comes from the bms with a small down converter from the 12v.

@@OffGridGarageAustralia No it is simple if using windows or linux it becomes a serial port so if using a raspberry pi its serial ports the software is pre made just need to follow the instructions to load it onto an esp8266 I am using it on a daly bms 250km away.

Hello, what recommendations do you have for those of us with solar installations at home for the solar storm coming this weekend? Thank you.
@junkerzn7312
@junkerzn7312 20 күн бұрын
Whole-home surge protectors should do a decent job on the AC side. These usually come packaged to insert into a free circuit breaker slot in the breaker box (must get the appropriate one for the type of box you have). For any DC-coupled solar, then DC surge protectors such as Midnite solar or even the cheaper stuff found in typical solar combiner boxes should do a decent job. Note that DC surge protectors need a solid ground to operate properly. Beyond that, not a whole lot. Anyone really really worried can always turn off their solar system. Proper disconnects are 2-pole so that isolates the pieces of the system quite well. I personally am just going to leave everything turned on.

I know the theory, but what impact would a Carrington Event have on solar installations? Thanks Andy

a POE port only feeds power to a POE device, if you plug in a non POE device in to a POE port it will function as a ordinary ethernet port.

also there are so called POE splitters out there that are actually just splitting the network cable up in to one power section and one data section but are not POE compliant.
@rklauco

Plugging the holes is to keep out bugs (etc). The fan, maybe if it runs 24/7 will keep most things away. There are enough gaps in the joints/doors to let air through. At least by filling all the vent holes, it reduces the places they can get in. With that one fan hole, perhaps some barrier deterrent (chemical or physical), things will be ok.
